Narrative forms and co-production in Arab cinemas
Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom
Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content as well as narrative and aesthetic forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This edition of Regards aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

The current issue of Regards will focus on the relations between the arts (cinema, theater, dance, visual arts…) and the body in the Arab societies and, more broadly, in the Mediterranean region. This sensitive subject suffers from prejudgment and prejudice in both audience’s and critics’ minds.

Contestations, Emotions! Social and artistic expressions in the Public Space
A theoretical and practical perspective from the ground
During the recent movements of contestation in Mediterranean countries different kind of aesthetic gestures using the streets and the public spaces as places for a public manifestation of some social, ordinary -or radical- critic. They proceed from an ordinary culture that is transformed, adapted then spread out upon a new form in artistic tracks taking place in public spaces. These actions have both a critical and aesthetic dimension. They rely on the environment, mobilize cognitive, memorial and cultural or ordinary patterns. They also mobilize a common culture . This is the case of rap, new uses of old music, villages against occupation, graphic art in Palestine, in Egypt or in Syria. The conference will present and analyse some forms of experimentations, and public and critical commitments. What kind of “public spaces” is in use nowadays? How it configures new spaces of critic and public space and a new environment ? The panel will adopt a trans-disciplinary perspective by bringing together social scientists and practicers or activists.

Climatic change, air quality and energy challenges: the role policy in urban transport and preventative measures in developing countries and emerging economies
Transport is an integral component of sustaining livelihoods: without efficient urban transport mankind would not survive and develop and nor would economies. Yet, despite the immense benefits that transport enables, such as access to jobs, markets, education, and consumer goods and services via global supply chains, the transport sector generates substantial disbenefits. These include dependence on non-renewable energy, greenhouse gas emissions, local pollutions, road accidents and inequalities of access. Such disbenefits clearly demonstrate that the transport sector is currently unsustainable economically, environmentally and socially.

Metropolitan energy policies: the case of the Turkish cities
Call for paper for a Seminar at the French Institute of Anatolian Studies (IFEA), co-organized by Eric Verdeil (Jean Moulin University in Lyon - UMR Environment City Corporation) and Jean-François Pérouse (Galatasaray University and IFEA). The report Energy and Urban Innovation (2010) by the World Energy Council underlines the fundamental role of cities in the energy transition and the interlocking of several series of actions, related to technology, economy and policy. It appears that the political and social practices are a major issue and justify an increased contribution of social sciences to the analysis of the implementation of these new policies. The seminar intends to address these issues in the case of large Turkish cities. -

Cette série de conférences sur la période byzantine s’ouvrira, en octobre 2010, dans le prolongement de l’événement d’Istanbul Capitale européenne de la culture. Après cet intérêt européen pour la ville contemporaine et son développement urbain, ce séminaire propose de s’orienter vers la cité byzantine et ses monuments. Istanbul est en perpétuel mouvement, ce qui permet la mise au jour de nouveaux sites ou la redécouverte d’anciens monuments qui ont été restaurés dans le cadre de l’événement européen. L’objectif de ces conférences est avant tout d’offrir, par l’intermédiaire de différentes disciplines, un nouveau regard sur ce thème de recherche. -

Dans le cadre du programme de recherche Guerre et paix dans le Proche-Orient médiéval, Xe-XVe siècles, développé conjointement à l'Institut français du Proche-Orient et à l'Institut français d'archéologie orientale du Caire, ce colloque permettra de dresser un état des lieux de la recherche portant sur la guerre dans le Proche-Orient médiéval, du Xe au XVe siècle, aussi bien dans ses aspects techniques que dans ses aspects théoriques. -

De l’empire aux États, les métamorphoses contemporaines d’une ancienne métropole et de sa région
Nous souhaitons comprendre comment une ville comme Alep est fabriquée et transformée par ses fonctionnements au quotidien et par l’intervention de mécanismes et de principes d’aménagement et de contrôle, dans son architecture, ses espaces, et dans les liens et les interactions qui la structurent. Nous nous intéressons aussi à sa zone d’influence et d’activité directe, qui constitue une partie de la Syrie : l’identité alépine est un élément de l’identité nationale dans un État-nation en cours d’élaboration. Nous nous intéressons enfin à son réseau d’interaction économique et culturelle à plus longue distance. -

Vingt-cinq siècles de bain collectif (Proche-Orient, Égypte et Péninsule arabique)
Le troisième colloque international Balnéorient se déroulera à Damas, du 2 au 6 novembre 2009, en étroite coordination avec la Direction générale des Antiquités et des musées de Syrie et l'Institut français du Proche-Orient (Ifpo). Après les approches diachroniques et régionales des colloques Balnéorient d'Alexandrie (dec. 2006) et d'Amman (mai 2008), cette troisième rencontre sur l'histoire du bain collectif depuis l'Antiquité jusqu’à nos jours favorisera les approches thématiques et comparatistes, dans une même démarche pluridisciplinaire. Rhétorique littéraire, rhétorique philosophique dans les mondes grec, syriaque et arabe
En distinguant la rhétorique de la philosophie (Gorgias), puis en décrivant l’usage proprement philosophique, c’est-à-dire politique, que l’on peut faire de la rhétorique (dans le Phèdre, le Politique, les Lois), Platon scella définitivement l’opposition entre la rhétorique « philosophique », réduite au rang de vassale de la philosophie, et la rhétorique « littéraire », représentée – dans la majorité des cas – par des ouvrages à l’orientation plus pratique, aux visées plus didactiques, qui se contentent de décrire des usages et fournir des préceptes sur l’art de bien parler. La tradition arabe connaît elle aussi cette dichotomie : à côté de la rhétorique de tradition philosophique, constituée par la série des commentaires (Farabi, Avicenne, Averroès…) sur la Rhétorique d’Aristote – traité inclus, en Orient, dans l’Organon –, on trouve en effet la balāġa.
