Urban China and the challenges of sustainability

Medium conference

This is the second international event organised in the context of the Medium project. While research conducted in the context of the project focus primarily on the medium-sized cities Hangzhou, Zhuhai and Datong, the conference will consider urban China in its diversity, with a great variety of case studies including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Tianjin, the region of the Taihu lake etc. It will address the issue of sustainability from a broad perspective, tackling ageing housing, social inclusion, urban governance, environmental sustainability, participatory processes in urban planning, with a multi-disciplinary approach ranging from geography, political science, economy, sociology, computer science, environmental science, etc.

This colloquium, organized in Beirut as part of the WAFAW program, aims to critically take part in a debate over the socio-economic undergrounds of the “political crises” in the region, a scarcely explored angle when dealing with this issue. It will base its contribution on investigations and original corpuses. Its purpose is to better understand how the Arab, Iranian, Turkish and other political societies observed are workedby highly singular processes (such as the importance of oil, of migration economy, or of war economies) but also amenable to an unequal globalization of exchanges. How (and not why) does the economy play into these political dynamics?

Europe and Asia: challenges and crisis-management

Further to the first Europe-Asia conferences exploring regional regime dynamics (France, 2004), policies of regional cooperation (Korea, 2005), interregional competition (France, 2012) and the limits of regional constructions (Kazakhstan, 2014), this 2016 edition will look at the reciprocal understanding of regions and how that is conducive to their capacity (or lack thereof) to monitor crises they undergo, both specific crises and interregional ones. Papers must address original research, in regional dynamics of Asia and Europe, since the end of the cold war and focus on one area among.

The theme of the 12th European Days, is entitled: “Crossed Perspectives on European Borders: Mobility, security and borders”.The goal of the conference is to tackle issues such as borders, new forms of mobility, migration policies and securitization in a changing context strongly marked by the financial and economic crisis in the region.

Circulation, borders, and migratory control in the Middle-East

L’Institut français du Proche-Orient organise un colloque à Amman les 29 et 30 mai 2014 sur la thématique des circulations humaines dans la région du Moyen-Orient (Turquie, Iran, Proche-Orient, Golfe). L’objectif est de réfléchir à la manière dont s’articulent les flux de circulation avec les contextes conflictuels qui caractérisent l’espace régional et la manière dont les différents États tentent de s’adapter à ces flux et de les encadrer. Dans un contexte de crise, les transformations spatiales des espaces frontaliers, des villes d’accueil, des zones où séjournent et se regroupent migrants et réfugiés seront au centre de ce colloque. De plus, le contexte socio-historique où des flux de migrants, de marchands, de pèlerins ou de réfugiés participent, depuis fort longtemps déjà, aux recompositions socio-spatiales de lieux qui servent de transit et d’accueil à ces populations mobiles, sera abordé pour questionner les flux actuels.

The Caucasus and Central Asia, twenty years after independences: Questioning the notion of “South countries”

Ce colloque clôture un projet ANR mené au Centre d'études des mondes russe, caucasien et centre européen (CERCEC, CNRS/EHESS), intitulé « Caucase et Asie Centrale : un autre Sud ? ». Il rassemblera à Almaty, outre les membres de l'équipe du projet, une cinquantaine de participants venus d'Asie Centrale, du Caucase, de Russie, d'Europe des Etats Unis et du Japon. Pluridisciplianire, ce colloque a pour ambition d’interroger la pertinence des outils heuristiques élaborés à partir de terrains situés au « Sud », mais aussi de la notion même de « Sud(s) » pour appréhender les périphéries méridionales de l’espace post-soviétique. Il entend réunir des chercheurs de toutes les disciplines des sciences sociales (sociologie, histoire, sciences politiques, géographie, anthropologie, démographie, économie). Territorial and Border Configurations to the Test of Mobility and Migrations (19th-21st century)

Ce séminaire international organisé par le programme MIMED de la MMSH d'Aix-en-Provence en partenariat avec le CRFJ examinera l’évolution des processus sociaux, économiques et politiques liés à la mise en place de dispositifs de gestion des mobilités et de la coprésence en Méditerranée. Il envisagera à la fois les politiques publiques mettant en place ces dispositifs à l’échelle d’Etats, de régions ou de villes, et les réactions des populations à ces dispositifs, leurs formes d’adaptation, de transgression ou de contournement. Il tentera enfin d’évaluer dans quelle mesure les réactions des populations peuvent en retour affecter les dispositifs. Dans la durée (du XIXe au XXIe siècle), Il s'agira d'interroger l’influence croissante des processus nés de la globalisation sur les mobilités et les configurations territoriales.

Il a pour ambition d’interroger la pertinence des outils heuristiques élaborés à partir de terrains situés au « Sud », mais aussi de la notion même de « Sud(s) » pour appréhender les périphéries méridionales de l’espace post-soviétique. Ce colloque viendra conclure un programme ANR intitulé « Caucase et Asie Centrale : un autre Sud ? », mené par une équipe pluridisciplinaire au sein du CERCEC (CNRS/EHESS) depuis 2008.

Les Arméniens dans le Bilâd al-Shâm : entre intégration et marginalisation (Xe-XVe siècle)

L'Ifpo organise en collaboration avec l’Institut des études orientales de l’académie des sciences d’Arménie, l'Université d'Alep et l’Université Paul Valery - Montpellier III un colloque intitulé « Les Arméniens dans le Bilâd al-Shâm : entre intégration et marginalisation (Xe-XVe siècle) ». Il se tiendra à Alep, les 7 et 8 octobre 2009. Ce colloque international accueillera des chercheurs confirmés, tout en permettant à de jeunes doctorants spécialistes des études arméniennes et/ou arabes d’exposer et de confronter leurs points de vue et leurs analyses sur l’histoire du peuplement arménien dans le Proche-Orient, et plus particulièrement en Syrie, à l’époque médiévale. Pour la première fois, une manifestation scientifique de cette importance consacrée à l’histoire des Arméniens à l’époque médiévale se tiendra en Syrie.
