  Narrative forms and co-production in Arab cinemas

  Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom

  Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content and narrative forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This conference aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

  International Summer Academy, 11-19 September 2014 at the Orient-Institut Beirut. This Summer Academy offers early-career scholars an opportunity to follow up on the debates about modernity, its preconditions and its aftermath by focusing on the multifarious processes in which societies outside Europe have adopted, translated, rejected or produced the global, the modern and tradition since the seventeenth century. It places a specific focus on the notions of subjectivity and objectivity as discursive practices which are intrinsically linked to each other.

  Amazighs and the turmoil of the Arab Spring

  Issues and perspectives for the Berber peoples in North Africa

  Ce panel s’intéressera au mouvement de revendication identitaire et linguistique berbère. Dans toute l’Afrique du Nord, la revendication culturelle amazighe articule toute une série d’acteurs collectifs. La structuration organisationnelle, la trajectoire, les répertoires d’actions et le pouvoir de se faire entendre de ces derniers varient selon les situations nationales tandis que se développent un discours et des références idéologiques communes, pan-amazighes. Les mobilisations en Kabylie, la participation des Amazighes au mouvement du 20 Février au Maroc, l’irruption sur la scène politique berbère de forces armées en Libye, l’émergence d’une revendication amazighe en Tunisie s’ajoutent à une extension des revendications culturelles et linguistiques à des domaines comme l’environnement et la gestion des ressources économiques locales. Par ailleurs on assiste à une montée en visibilité des jeunes lors des mobilisations récentes. Le panel se proposera donc de discuter des thèmes en relation avec cette évolution.

  Graduate and Postgraduate Programs in Education in Arab Universities: Quality and Added Value

  This conference is organized by the Arab Educational Information Network Shamaa and the Lebanese Association for Educational Studies and will be held in November 2013 in Beirut, Lebanon. The conference's objective is to provide a platform for educational researchers to present their perspectives on the current state of research studies in graduate programs in education and to raise questions regarding the quality of these studies. Papers presented will be subject to peer review process to be eligible for publication in the refereed conference proceedings. We hope that this conference will help capture the current practices in MA and PHD programs in education in the Arab countries, and will allow for a rich professional dialogue among its participants toward developing ideas and recommendations for improving these programs as well as the quality of their graduates and the studies they produce.

  Ce colloque se propose de réfléchir sur les modes de représentation médiatique de l’islam politique à partir d’études de cas emblématiques (Palestine, Yémen, Soudan, Iran, Liban…) en explorant les facteurs qui président à leur construction et circulation. Il s’intéressera ensuite aux nouveaux lieux de communication politique islamistes – les i-médias – en s’interrogeant sur les formes de mobilisation et de réception qu’ils suscitent aux niveaux local, national et transnational.

  Catégories langagières énonciatives d’un espace méditerranéen : de « l’homo oeconomicus » à « l’homo reciprocus ». Nous allons nous demander si quelques mouvements émergents -les minorités par ex.- ne mobilisent pas des « ressources » différentes de celles dont on se sert habituellement, comme « classes sociales », « mouvements sociaux » etc. Il s’agirait des catégories langagières de la « reconnaissance » (et non plus seulement de « l’action sur l’autre », homme ou nature), de l’inter-dépendance (et non plus seulement de l’indépendance) etc. Ces critères, énonçant non plus un « homo economicus » mais un « homo reciprocus », ne seraient-ils pas propres d’une « autre modernité », à l’œuvre dans la culture commune aux deux rives de la Méditerranée ?
