Cet appel est destiné aux doctorants francophones en sciences humaines et sociales des universités de l’Alliance 4EU+ et d’autres établissements. Les organisateurs de ce séminaire-wébinaire se posent pour objectif de mener une réflexion méthodologique, épistémologique et conceptuelle sur le numérique et d’effectuer des études de cas dans différents domaines de recherche appartenant à l’univers des sciences humaines et sociales, en se concentrant autour d’un thème fédérateur – le peuple. Les organisateurs invitent les propositions de réflexion concernant le peuple dans tous les sens du terme : en tant que construction politique, sociale, nationale, géographique, linguistique ou ethnique.

Call for papers - Early modern
The subject of this international conference is the participation of women in the development of scientific ideas from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. It welcomes reflections on women’s intellectual contributions to the creation of the « Republic of Letters », and how female curiosity was connected to the development of a new rationality that opened new paths towards modern science, while simultaneously being stimulated by the marvellous and the strange, as was manifest in the creation of scientific cabinets and collections of rare objects. It aims at encouraging reflections on the concept of female scientific curiosity. This will allow us to discuss the construction of a female subjectivity emerged from new approaches towards collections of naturalia.

Disguise, dressing-up and transformations
Alors que notre travail en tant que chercheur·se·s est de classer, il s’agira ici d’étudier des cas de l’entre-deux au Moyen Âge : on se penchera sur la porosité entre différents groupes établis et les transformations, extérieures et intérieures, que cela implique. Il pourra s'agir de la transition d'une espèce à l'autre, d'un genre à l'autre, d'une espèce ou encore d'une ethnie à l'autre. Cette transformation de l'extérieur pourra notamment (mais pas seulement) passer par le déguisement ; quand la transformation est un passage d'un genre à l'autre, on parle souvent de « travestissement ». On prendra garde à ne pas considérer les trois termes « déguisements, « travestissements », « transformations » comme des équivalents : loin de les envisager comme synonymes, nous invitons à penser la relation extérieur/intérieur d'un·e individu·e de manière dynamique. Car modifier son aspect extérieur peut aussi permettre de révéler son intériorité réelle au monde, d'attester d'une transformation intime, ou d'accompagner cette transformation identitaire.

The conference Transmission of knowledge on fish and aquatic animals, texts and images (Antiquity, Middle Ages, 16th century) will be the closing event of GDRI Zoomathia, which ends at the end of 2021. The Zoomathia 2021 conference in Caen, organized by the ICHTYA program of Craham, is an extension of the 2017 conference.This conference wishes to emphasize, without being limited to ichthyofauna, on the scientific contribution of ancient sources on aquafauna in the broad sense and the biological and ecological knowledge of the species that compose it; the transmission and diachronic evolution of scholarly data on this fauna through the various knowledge media (texts, iconography - mosaics, illuminated manuscripts, early printed books and engravings, etc.); the mode of representation and identification of marine animals species permitted by old documents and related methodological issues.

History and polemics: historiographical debates and the public space
Ever since history became an academic knowledge, historiographical debates have been exceptional moments of construction, condensation and dissensus, often resulting in historiographical turns. Controversies around specific themes have divided entire fields of knowledge production, bringing into light different, often contrasting conceptions, methodologies and practices of historical knowledge. Such debates were, at the same time, moments in which the description and interpretation of the past represented a public intervention in the present, in which the defense of a certain way of making sense of history was also a way of taking of sides in a specific contemporary political discussion. Historiographical polemics were therefore moments in which historiographical knowledge had to confront in the public space other approaches to the past, thus making visible, and challenging, the paradigms that rule the historical discipline and public history.

Le séminaire étudie l'organisation du travail intellectuel et de l'activité scientifique à partir de l'histoire des publications du XIXe siècle à aujourd'hui. À l'issue d'une enquête sur les revues scientifiques, la session 2020-2021 reprendra la problématique de l'articulation de l'ensemble des publications produites dans un champ disciplinaire, à partir de deux exemples, l'archéologie et la physique, dans une perspective chronologique large. Il approfondira également les liens entre écrit, publication et outillage documentaire au milieu du XXe siècle, à partir d'études de cas (expositions et musées documentaires).

Virtuosities. Ethics and aesthetics of technical gestures from the Middle Ages to the 19th century
Le présent colloque vise donc à provoquer la rencontre et le dialogue de différentes approches du geste technique, à partir d’une catégorie de gestes que l’on nomme virtuoses. On entend par là, l’attitude qui consiste à imposer indiscrètement à l’attention l’acte de produire ; la virtuosité étant considérée comme la primauté accordée à une métatechnique. Le phénomène sera examiné dans le domaine de la construction, mais aussi dans l’ensemble des activités artisanales et artistiques des époques pré-industrielles (de la peinture à la danse et à la musique, en passant par l’orfèvrerie, l’ébénisterie, le textile ou encore l’art des jardins). Il s’agira de voir si, par exemple, les constats élaborés sur ce phénomène par les sciences cognitives ou anthropologiques peuvent être historicisés pour éclairer notre connaissance du geste technique virtuose, de son statut et de sa valeur sociale ou culturelle et nourrir ainsi l’analyse de l’historien.

The week: partitioning and uses of social time, 19th-20th centuries

La semaine est évidemment une veille affaire puisqu’elle présida à l’invention du monde. Mais il se trouve que beaucoup l’oublièrent. Si ses usages, notamment religieux, ont longtemps ordonné l’organisation du temps collectif, ils tendirent à s’affaiblir dans le cours ordinaire des choses qui lui préféra d’autres scansions, quotidiennes, agricoles, saisonnières, etc. Une inflexion est cependant sensible à compter de la fin du XIXe siècle. Le déclin (relatif) de la semaine religieuse s’accompagne en effet, et paradoxalement, d’usages de plus en plus nombreux de découpes hebdomadaires. Au théâtre, puis au cinéma, la « semaine culturelle » a le vent en poupe. Le monde des affaires ou celui de la politique tendent également à réordonner le temps sur un mode hebdomadaire. Ce sont les usages renouvelés du temps par la découpe hebdomadaire que cette livraison entend explorer, à partir d’une série d’essais empiriques centrés sur des pratiques ou des activités caractéristiques de la modernité occidentale.

Contending Representations: Questioning Republicanism in Early Modern Genoa (1559-1684)
In the past thirty years, several studies have been devoted to the political and cultural flowering of the republic of Genoa during the so-called ‘siglo de los Genoveses’, between 1528 and 1630, when Genoa became the hub of European trade and an important epicenter of artistic and literary production. Yet little attention has been granted to the cultural and economic crisis that followed or to how Genoese republican state power was represented during the long seventeenth century, especially in relation to neighbouring polities. To address this gap, the conference will explore how the Genoese Republic shaped its political image between 1559 – the year of the publication of Oberto Foglietta’s Delle cose della repubblica di Genova – and 1684, when Genoa was bombed by the French. We intend to address questions such as how did Genoese politicians and men of letters represent their homeland? How was Genoa represented by the Genoese community in Spain or in the Low Countries? How was its political system conceived by other Italian and non-Italian political writers? And how did prevailing depictions of absolutism influence republican rhetoric?

Eschatology is one of the central components of medieval Christian culture. The end of the world, the Last Judgment, salvation, Messianism, the Antichrist, the Apocalypticism and millenarianism are inescapable elements in what we may generally describe as "Medieval eschatology". It is the intention of the International Conference "The Medieval Eschatology" to provide a venue for reflecting on these as well as other eschatological issues that may be proposed. This can be done analytically or descriptively from both a practical and theoretical approach.

Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union? The notion of "culture" and studying the facts of war
La journée d'études portera sur la notion de « culture » et l'étude du fait guerrier. Elle s'adresse aux doctorants et jeunes chercheurs de toutes les disciplines de sciences humaines et sociales. Le programme est articulé autour de trois axes. Un premier sera consacrée aux cultures politiques et stratégiques et à l'influence des idéologies et des perceptions sur l'élaboration des stratégies. Un deuxième s'intéressera à la culture militaire au sens large, à travers la culture des corps et des métiers de l'armée. La dernière partie élargira l'étude de la culture militaire, au-delà de la seule institution militaire, pour embrasser d'autres types de sociétés ou groupes en armes.
