Artistic, Digital, and Political Creation in English-Speaking African Countries
Africa 2020
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on 3rd July 2018 in Lagos that a Special Season would be organized in France, from June to December 2020, to mark a renewed partnership with Africa, a “varied, strong and diverse continent that will play a part in our shared future”. Even if this cultural focus cannot be abstracted from a broader geopolitical agenda marred by controversial presidential declarations, it nevertheless has the potential to offer a somewhat different coverage of the continent. One can only hope that it avoids the temptation to officially “curate into being” “exceptional” artists (Dovey), tapping into the all-too-familiar image of Africa as “the supreme receptacle of the West’s obsession with, and circular discourse about, the facts of ‘absence,’ ‘lack,’ and ‘non-being,’ of identity and difference” (Mbembe).

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on 3rd July 2018 in Lagos that a Special Season would be organized in France, from June to December 2020, to mark a renewed partnership with Africa, a “varied, strong and diverse continent that will play a part in our shared future”. The peer-reviewed journal of Aix-Marseille Université research centre on Anglophone Studies (LERMA), E-rea, has decided to seize the opportunity of Africa 2020 to dedicate a special issue to contemporary artistic, digital, and political creation in English-speaking African countries. Heeding Kenyan political analyst Nanjala Nyabola’s advice to eschew the too reductive ‘Africa rising’ and ‘Africa failing’ narratives in favour of ‘Africa being’ stories, this special issue wishes to focus on “stories reflecting the ambivalence, complexity, challenges and opportunities of African societ[ies] in an increasingly connected world”.

Short-sea shipping, myth or future of regional transport
Ce colloque sur le thème du transport maritime à courte distance (TMCD) ou « short-sea-shipping » ambitionne d’être un rendez-vous incontournable de l’année 2016 pour les acteurs des secteurs maritimes et portuaires réunis autour d’un sujet d‘avenir. L’objectif est de comparer les différentes approches disciplinaires se référant à cette thématique de l’activité maritime au niveau international. Le colloque, qui se tiendra en francais et en anglais, abordera également les politiques de transport et le financement de l’Union européenne ainsi que les innovations techniques et organisationnelles du transport maritime qui créent des nouvelles opportunités pour le transfert des trafics terrestres vers la mer et pour la création des nouveaux services maritimes régionaux.

La Côte d’Ivoire a traversé une décennie de crises militaro-politiques qui ont déchiré son tissu sociétal, ébranlé l’État, malmené l’économie. La crise post-électorale de 2010-2011 en a constitué tout à la fois le moment paroxystique et un dénouement. Depuis lors, le pays tente laborieusement de se remettre sur pied, en misant sur une bonne croissance économique pour régler le problème en suspens de la réconciliation post-conflit. Cette demi-journée propose de faire dialoguer trois chercheurs relevant de l’anthropologie, de l’économie et de la science politique, pour réfléchir ensemble aux évolutions passées et en cours en Côte d’Ivoire.

Après avoir insisté sur l’obligation qu’avaient les migrants à travailler à l’essor économique de leur région d’origine et prôner le co-développement, les États commencent, en lien avec les réalités migratoires, à promouvoir la migration circulaire. Ces dernières années, le Burkina Faso a accueilli des milliers de ressortissants, refoulés de Côte d’Ivoire et de Libye et a été conduit à mettre en œuvre des mesures au coup par coup sans qu’on puisse véritablement parler de politique migratoire. Ces différentes thématiques ont déjà fait l’objet de journées d’études au sein du LPED permettant d’interroger la catégorie des rapatriés tout comme les relations controversées entre migration et développement.

Nutrition and Food Production in the Congo Basin
Nutrition is a universal human right. Population growth and a higher demand for food, together with a changing nutrition pattern, will put the environment, at global level, under a growing pressure in the coming decennia. This pressure will be very strong on regions with a high biodiversity due to the ever growing demand on arable land and an increasing demand for animal protein, which will negatively influence the global ecosystem, the global climate and the biodiversity. The aim of the conference is to highlight a number of topics dealing with nutrition, the demand for food and food production – past and future.

South Africa 2010... beyond football
Le SIRENE 22 de l'Institut de recherche et d'enseignement sur la négociation (ESSEC IRENE) colle au thème de la saison, puisqu'il portera sur l'Afrique du Sud. Deux décennies seulement après la fin de l'apartheid, deux intervenants s'exprimeront sur les accomplissements socio-économiques du pays, et ce qui lui reste à parcourir. Barney Jordaan, Professeur à l'université de Stellenbosch (Le Cap et Directeur de l'African Centre for Dispute Settlement donnera une présentation sur le thème « Doing Business in South Africa: the Socio-Economic, Political and Legal Environment ». Laetitia Bucaille, Maître de Conférences à l'université de Bordeaux 2 et chercheur associé au CERI, s'exprimera sur le thème suivant : « Reconciliation in South Africa, Twenty Years Later » . Présenté par Aurélien Colson, directeur d'IRENE et professeur à l'ESSEC, ce SIRENE aura lieu le 1er juillet 2010 de 15h à 18h dans les locaux de l'ESSEC à Cergy Pontoise (salle F122) et se déroulera en anglais. From debt to over-indebtedness in southern countries: Processes, practices and meanings
International Workshop, Paris-IEDES, 7-8 december 09
Organized by UMR 201, RUME India, Mexico, Madagascar, CIESAS (Mexico) (www.rume-rural-microfinance.org). The main purpose of this interdisciplinary workshop will be a theoretical and empirical examination of over-indebtedness from the perspective of southern countries, with the following underlying hypothesis: to define and analyze the process of indebtedness requires first an understanding of the complexity and diversity of debt relationships. The following questions might be addressed: 1) The social meaning of debt, creditworthiness and over-indebtedness. 2) Financial ‘markets’ and financial providers. 3) Financial culture. 4) Impoverishment and accumulation. 5) Over-indebtedness. -

The international conference is being held to share and evaluate recent research on Congo Basin hunter-gatherers. It has been almost ten years since international researchers have convened to discuss research and development issues facing Congo Basin hunter-gatherers. We are especially interested in field-based research reports from any discipline, but encourage participants to consider their data and conclusions within the scope of development, global change and the fate of Congo Basin peoples. Extensive cultural diversity exists and not all Congo Basis huntergatherers actively hunt and gather (e.g., they may have cash crops or live near cities). We are interested in understanding cultural diversity and processes of culture change, but the focus is on peoples and groups with a long history of living in and strong identity with the tropical forest. Papers on Congo Basin farmers and fishermen are encouraged if they include a history of or relationships between hunter-gatherers and farmers or fishermen. Papers that compare Congo Basin hunter-gatherer with farmers/fisherman or Congo Basin hunter-gatherers with hunter-gatherers in other parts of the world are also welcome. -

Le cas du secteur minier en République démocratique du Congo
Ce colloque vise à stimuler la recherche de solutions réalistes envisageant l’exploitation des richesses naturelles en faveur de toutes les couches de la société dans le respect de leur environnement naturel comme de leurs valeurs culturelles et en facilitant l’accès local de la société civile à l’information. Une étude de cas est envisagée ici : le secteur minier en RDC - fondamental pour l’avenir et la paix dans la région - qui est abordé selon une approche globale, multidisciplinaire et trans-sectorielle. Fort de sa multidisciplinarité et des divers projets qu’il a initiés, le Musée royal de l’Afrique centrale propose de confronter les analystes aux acteurs de terrain afin que cette conférence constitue un apport original parmi les nombreuses enquêtes, réflexions et recommandations passées et à venir sur le secteur. -
