Mississippi Delta Communities Facing Disappearing Land
"Still on the Map!" takes as its context the Mississippi Delta fifteen years after Hurricane Katrina and about five years after the commissioning of the major new "100-year" flood protection infrastructure. Expressed from its title -a statement of resistance/resilience chanted by many inhabitants during ecological events in Louisiana- this research project aims to describe the links and "attachments" (LATOUR, 2017) that different communities in the delta maintain with their geographical environment in a situation of strong ecological tipping point, integrating the natural and artificial infrastructures of the watershed into the definition of ecosystems as socio-political actors in their own right. In a context where the delta's land is gradually sinking into the sea, every hour the surface area of a football pitch is permanently flooded.

Investigating parental motivation for alternative education
What are parents’ motives to educate without school ? Among the most spontaneously questions addressed to homeschooling, this question has been one of the most researched by scholars, particularly in the United States. Thinking in terms of parental “choice”, “reasons”, “motivations” or “decisions” electing alternative education leads however to conceptual and empirical challenges. To discuss these theoretical and methodological issues of the scientific study of “parental alternative choices”, the workshop gathers researchers whose investigations, about parents who home educate and/or parents who school their children in alternative schools, use diverse concepts or techniques.

Rethinking the History of the Rust Belt since 1945
This region, stretching from western New York to eastern Iowa, was until the middle of the 20th century the country's manufacturing and industrial heartland. From the Great Migrations that radically transformed its demographics to the weakening of its economic model, as well as the massive struggles waged by local workers and protagonists of the Civil Rights movement, the political and social history of the Rust Bel. By bringing into dialogue the ongoing or recently completed research of doctoral students and junior academics with a view to opening up new perspectives on the history of the Rust Belt, from a range of disciplines (history, sociology, political science, geography), we intend to highlight spaces and actors too often relegated to the margins of this region’s history, despite their having decisively contributed to shaping the contemporary Rust Belt

Research program about artificial specimens of the natural sciences at the Sorbonne (SPEscies)
Le programme de recherche Spescies (spécimens artificiels de sciences naturelles en Sorbonne) est né d’une préoccupation commune de chercheurs en histoire de sciences, d’historiens de l’art et de conservateurs concernant un type de patrimoine négligé : les collections universitaires dédiées à la diffusion et à l’enseignement des sciences naturelles. Les collections que l’équipe a sélectionnées ont toutes la même caractéristique : ce sont des pièces manufacturées d’histoire naturelle, ayant été utilisées par des scientifiques, des enseignants ou des étudiants, de la fin du XVIIIe siècle au début du XXe siècle dans les établissements universitaires.

In the workshop - materials, forms and knowledges of artistic work
L’atelier est le lieu par excellence du travail artistique. Il est à la fois un espace matériel, une unité de vie et un creuset des formes. Pourtant, il reste souvent un monde en soi aux yeux de la tradition historiographique, c’est-à-dire une unité close sur elle-même, qui recèle le secret du travail artistique en même temps qu’il le dissimule. En confrontant l’histoire de l’art aux autres sciences sociales et à l’expertise des sciences de la conservation et de la restauration, on interrogera les formes du travail collectif, la construction de la valeur, l’élaboration et la transmission de savoirs et de savoir-faire dans les pratiques artistiques.

Race, urban planning and African-American culture in Chicago
The colloquium will celebrate the centenary of the “Great Migration” and explore the social and cultural life of Chicago South Side and West Side from the end of the Thirties, which were marked by the cultural zenith of Bronzeville neighborhood and a series of measures for the Black community inspired by the New Deal, to the present, which is characterized by numerous private and public initiatives in favor of an urban renewal. This international and multidisciplinary colloquium seeks to reevaluate the contribution of the South Side and the West Side to the definition and evolution of the African-American identity from the beginning of the XXth Century until the contemporary moment.

The Visual History Archive, Research Experience
Founded by the film director Steven Spielberg in 1994, the Visual History Archive is a collection of testimonies recorded in order to preserve the words, faces, gestures and histories of genocide survivors. Digitized and indexed to the minute (with more than 62 000 keywords), the Visual History Archive is now reachable in full access in 66 universities and libraries in 14 countries. In France, it is fully accessible at the George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights and Conflict Prevention of the American University of Paris and at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Lyon. Now more than ever, scholars can search the Visual History Archive for research on the Second World War or on the other crimes of mass violence which have been more recently appended to the collection. The aim of this journée d’étude is to gather scholars from different disciplines who have carried out research on or with the Visual History Archive. Participants will have the opportunity to share their research results and experiences.

Lors de cette journée, les auteurs des notices, après avoir présenté leur travail, échangeront avec des collègues commentateurs qui porteront un regard extérieur et critique sur le travail de cette anthologie.

Production, conservation, utilisation
La poésie n'a jamais cessé d'être dite, mais avec la possibilité de l'enregistrement sonore, on conserve, depuis plus d'un siècle maintenant, de très nombreuses « voix de poètes », de très nombreux poèmes sous leur forme oralisée. Le premier objectif de ce colloque international est de mettre en lumière l'importance d'un tel corpus, assez négligé jusqu'à présent par la recherche universitaire, et de réfléchir aux conditions de possibilité d'une meilleure indexation, d'une meilleure valorisation et, dans certains cas, d'une meilleure conservation de ce type d'archives. Ce colloque voudrait initier en France une réflexion de fond sur le patrimoine sonore de la poésie, depuis sa production jusqu'à ses usages.

La technologie, entendue au sens étymologique de discours sur les arts et métiers, c’est-à-dire comme science des opérations, a suscité un vif intérêt au début du XIXe siècle. Alors que l’intensification du travail marque tous les modes de production – artisanat, industrie rurale, manufactures – de nombreux acteurs des techniques (artisans, ingénieurs, savants, caméralistes, etc.) proposent une théorisation de l’action productive, formulant de façon plus ou moins aboutie leur compréhension du travail en termes opératoires et plaçant de grands espoirs dans une science humaine capable d’améliorer l’activité.

Material culture and the writing of history: the case of African-Americans
Cette journée explore les écritures alternatives de l’histoire qu’ont mis en œuvre les Africains-Américains au travers de leur culture matérielle depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle, en parallèle des histoires plus « classiques » que les historiens noirs produisaient également. Nous nous intéresserons aux objets produits par les Africains-Américains et destinés à retracer leur histoire : patchworks, scrapbooks, cahiers de recettes manuscrites, livres d’enfants, livres de musique et partitions musicales etc. Il s’agira surtout d’examiner les intentions des auteurs (contexte politique et idéologique), les conditions de production de ces objets (matériaux utilisés, méthodes et repères), la distribution, la réception et la transmission des objets. Mais il faudra également s’interroger sur la manière dont les historiens actuels utilisent et interprètent ces objets (Ellen Garvey, Writing with Scissors). Dans cette perspective, nous étendrons notre réflexion aux fouilles archéologiques qui sont menées sur les anciennes plantations (Monticello), ou dans les villes nord-américaines, et qui renouvellent notre connaissance de l’histoire des esclaves depuis quelques décennies. De même que nous nous intéresserons à la préservation privée de ces traces matérielles.

L’Atelier des Doctorants Américanistes (ADAM) reprend des activités pour l'année 2014 / 2015. L’ADAM a vu le jour au début de l’année 2008 au sein du laboratoire CREW de la Sorbonne Nouvelle. Animé par des doctorants, il permet à des jeunes chercheurs de plusieurs universités de se réunir pour échanger sur la recherche en civilisation américaine. Cette année notre thème de réflexion est le suivant : Minority / Majority.

North American Studies in France and Europe
State of the Art and Future Prospects
In 1980, François Furet established the first visiting chair in North American studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in partnership with the French-American Foundation. Yet, it was not until 1984 and the election of Jean Heffer as permanent full professor that the Center for North American Studies (CENA) came into being. Despite pioneering efforts in some English departments and the creation of the first university chair in North American history at the Sorbonne in 1967, there was significant disparity between the importance of the USA in the contemporary world and the weakness of North American studies in France. Over the last thirty years and under the supervision of Jean Heffer and François Weil, the CENA has become one of the leading institutions for North American scholarship in France and Europe.
