The return of the Rust Belt in the age of populisms: places, issues and strategies
Ce projet de colloque, organisé à l'université de Paris-Est Créteil les 20-21 juin 2019, prévoit d'interroger l'objet géographique « Rust Belt » (ceinture de la rouille) sous différents éclairages thématiques, méthodologiques et disciplinaires. Il a pour ambition d’entreprendre un état des lieux de la Rust Belt, dans un contexte fortement marqué par les échéances électorales, entre les élections de mi-mandat de novembre 2018 et les différentes élections, notamment présidentielle, de 2020.

The conference will examine the cultural history of conservative ideas and movements in Western Europe and the United States between the 1970s and the 1990s. Focusing on cultures of conservatism, the conference will rethink the general contours of conservatism. University meets industry at Denim City in Amsterdam
The aim of this one-day conference is to explore the evolution of denim from its origins in the French town of Nîmes, through the American invention of the modern blue jeans, to the contemporary global manufacturing and marketing of denim and jeans. Blue denim jeans are the most worn garments in the world. Even though denim is often perceived as a symbol of American culture, the denim fabric originated in Europe and has a long history. Yet it was only when denim trousers were riveted that the first modern pair of jeans were created in the late XIXth century. Since this invention, jeans have made grand transformations from a worker’s garment, through a uniform of non-conformity and youth protest, to an item of fashion design. Recently, the Netherlands has become an international marketing cluster for the global denim industry.

Third Sector. Towards a collaborative Public Service
XIVth edition of the International Public Management Symposium
There is a trend for governments to try developping partnerships with the Third Sector (non-profit associations, foundations, social enterprises and cooperatives...) which is being recognized as one of the main economical and social actor. We may quote, as an example, the governmental project of Big Society in the United-Kingdom. This international symposium will gather researchers and practitioners to debate the place of the Third Sector in the process of creating a collaborative Public Service. Many questions will be at stake: How to define the Third Sector? What is the impact of cultural characteritics on its development? How does it imply the participation of civil society to the co-production of Public Services? Is it a "miracle cure" in this time of pressure on the public purse?

Le séminaire « Les Amériques en Livres » s'intéresse aux ouvrages publiés par les maisons d'édition partenaires de l'Institut des Amériques, ainsi qu'aux travaux en sciences humaines parus chez les principaux éditeurs français et étrangers. Il contribue à faire découvrir les études les plus récentes sur les Amériques. Les ouvrages portent sur l'ensemble des espaces américains du XVIe siècle à nos jours et reflètent la diversité méthodologique employée dans les études présentées, la pluridisciplinarité, les approches locales ou globales, les ouvrages biographiques et de références. Les analyses comparatives et transnationales, abordées dans ce séminaire, établissent des liens et soulèvent des problématiques nouvelles entre les divers espaces des Amériques, l'Europe, l'Asie ou l'Afrique. Enfin, les présentations et échanges avec le public alimentent la réflexion sur les débats historiographiques actuels.

The French Ministry of Labor, Employment, Training and Social dialogue - the DARES - and the CEPREMAP are organizing an international conference on “European and American Labor Markets in the Crisis” with experts from the academic community and representatives of foreign institutions. The conference will be organized around four themes: the role of the labor market institutions during the crisis; the differentiated impacts across workers; the specific features of the current crisis in terms of productivity, wages and unemployment; the reforms and adjustments of labor policies.

The paradigms of the model of American capitalism: between theory and fiction?
La thématique d’ensemble retenue porte sur les représentations du capitalisme au sein du monde anglophone, qu’elles s’incarnent en paradigmes théoriques et/ou en fictions narratives s’agrégeant à ou bien contestant un modèle de capitalisme néolibéral qui se veut exemple universel. La première journée d’étude permettra de mener une analyse épistémique des concepts et des paradigmes issus de l’aire culturelle américaine afin de repérer les variables économiques, institutionnelles, culturelles et discursives qui décrivent, expliquent et construisent un régime capitaliste d’accumulation singulier fondé sur des modalités expressives qui s’incarnent dans des formes contextualisées, illustratives et/ou littéraires.

Souvent envisagée du seul point de vue de ses dimensions économiques et financières, l’histoire des dettes publiques est pourtant consubstantielle à la construction des États et des sociétés contemporaines. À ce titre, elle est un objet central de l’histoire politique, car elle invite à s’interroger sur les transformations historiques de la souveraineté, les rapports de force entre les États, leurs créanciers et les contribuables, et les relations complexes entre indépendance nationale et insertion dans une économie mondialisée.

Organized as a workshop, this symposium aims to explore the public debt as the locus for political debates and conflicts. It brings together case studies analyzing aspects of the link between politics (especially in its social or participative dimensions) and the indebtedness of states. The discussions will help shed new light on such central concepts, for our understanding of the modern political world, as sovereignty, citizenship, democracy, and solidarity.

Assistant HES (Doctoral student) at Geneva School of Business Administration
The Geneva School of Business Administration (HEG-Geneva) offers a Research Assistant (Doctoral student) position for three years starting from 1st September 2013.The doctoral student will participate to the project « Organizing, Communicating, and Costing in Risk Governance: Learning Lessons from the H1N1 Pandemic », financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation. He or she will be in charge of the research components dedicated to costing around H1N1. This comparative study will involve qualitative fieldwork in three countries, namely Switzerland, the United States and Japan. He or she will collaborate with a post-doctoral fellow focusing on issues related to organization and communication. He or she will have to write a PhD thesis on H1N1 costing issues and will be supervised by Prof. Nathalie Brender. The project is funded for three years.

A Political History of Public Debts (Europe and the United States, since the Late Eighteenth Century)
This is call for papers for a symposium to be held in Paris in June 2013. Its main theme is a political history of public debts since the end of the eighteenth century. Organized as a workshop, this symposium aims to explore the public debt as the locus for political debates and conflicts. Our goal is to bring together various case studies, using different approaches, but all analyzing aspects of the link between politics (especially in its social or participative dimensions) and the indebtedness of states. This should help shed new light on such central concepts for our understanding of the modern political world as sovereignty, citizenship, democracy, and solidarity. -

A l’heure où les studios américains Raleigh investissent la région toulousaine pour y construire les plus grands plateaux de tournage d’Europe, où la (re)localisations des tournages de films devient un enjeu majeur des politiques nationales de soutien aux industries cinématographiques en Europe tout autant que des stratégies des états américains, où les « film funds » des régions européennes s’organisent en réseau pour donner une nouvelle impulsion aux critères de sélection des films articulés désormais entre qualité artistique, dynamiques territoriales et attractivité touristique, nous avons voulu interroger ces nouvelles mutations de l’économie du cinéma qui font éclater les frontières entre global et local, entre qualité artistique et aventures commerciales.
