  The Pillars of Rule

  The Writ of Dynasties and Nation-States in the Middle East and South Asia

  Max Weber famously argued that states lay claim to the monopoly of the legitimate use of violence over certain circumscribed territories. However, historical and anthropological research has challenged his ideal-typical vision by showing how the idea of the unitary state is a fiction that can only be produced through the action of interrelated but partly autonomous agents. States, and the various institutions that constitute them, face the strategic task of identifying and domesticating the social networks that are necessary for them to secure control over particular territories and their populations. Local strongmen and notables can in turn use their own local influence in order to gain recognition from higher-level, more powerful, state institutions. In this international conference, scholars from a variety of disciplines will explore the ways in which dynastic power and/or the rule of the state is asserted, negotiated and contested across both the Middle East and South Asia.

  The cinema of insurrection

  Experiences and singular imagery in conflict and post-conflict situations

  Ce colloque est l’aboutissement d’un premier travail de recherche et de rencontre conduit avec des cinéastes et militants filmant de manière atypique les situations de conflits et post-conflits depuis plusieurs années ou décennies. L’objectif de ce colloque est donc de confronter les pratiques et les engagements d’artistes et de chercheurs enquêtant sur diverses situations de mobilisations ou de résistances armées, et sur la mémoire et l’amnésie constitutive de l’expérience historique des situations de post-conflits. Ces pratiques filmiques peuvent aussi inspirer les sciences sociales par leurs positions et leurs observations au plus proche des expériences de leurs interlocuteurs. En plaçant les travaux de ces cinéastes au centre des interventions, ce colloque entend aussi réinterroger les modes de savoir et les constructions de sens produits par l’image.

  Refugees in the City

  The Urban Studies Seminar is a joint activity of the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) and 'Europe in the Middle East - The Middle East in Europe' (EUME), a research program at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin. It is part of the EUME research field, «Cities Compared». The seminar aims at presenting and discussing ongoing research of scholars working on cities in regions with Muslim societies with an emphasis on Urban Studies in a comparative perspective.

  The materials of the historian of the East

  Le colloque a pour objectif de réunir les spécialistes de l’Orient afin de leur donner l’occasion de présenter les matériaux sur lesquels ils travaillent, d’en exposer aussi bien l’intérêt que les spécificités. L’intitulé de cette rencontre doit être compris dans son acception la plus large, tant du point de vue géographique que disciplinaire : l’« Orient » est ce vaste périmètre qui va de Corfou à la mer du Japon ; les « matériaux » sont les documents textuels sous toutes leurs formes, les vestiges archéologiques, les œuvres artistiques, les données linguistiques et tout autre trace du passé ; enfin, l’« historien » est entendu comme celui qui tente de comprendre comment on vivait, pensait ou agissait autrefois.
