  Planetary Futures

  In the face of the current ecological crisis, how shall we rethink concepts and practices of environment, ecology, difference, and technology to envision and create a more just, sustainable, and diverse planet? The combined histories of colonialism, extraction industries, energy, as well as innovation in design, architecture, literature and technology offer a lens by which to examine how contemporary techno-scientific societies envision planetary futures. Site visits exploring resource extraction, colonialism in urban policy and planning, and speculative architectural design will be accompanied by an analysis of science fiction, science technology, speculative design and ethnography, as well as life and earth sciences.

  “I am Turtle”

  What Spaces are there for the Representation of First Nations and Inuit Artistic and Cultural Expression in the City?

  As part of the programming of the 375th anniversary of Montreal, the many stories surrounding its spaces and the pluralité of the voices occupying the metropole are being presented and celebrated. Despite the increasing number of Indigenous peoples living or passing through the city, the history of First Nations as well as their numerous present-day projects based in Montreal are maginalized by the official program. This underrepresentation of Indigenous communities in urbain settings seems to be characteristic of a larger Noth American reality. For artists and researchers in the field of arts and literature, among others, the following question arises: what spaces in urbain centers are dedicated to Indigenous artistic representation?

  Instances radicales : actions et sujets

  Discussions théoriques et artistiques autour du thème du « radical » comme adjectif porteur de changement, d’engagement, de mobilisation, d’occupation et d’inspiration.

  À l'automne 2012 aura lieu un cycle de conférences à la suite duquel se tiendra un colloque interuniversitaire à l’hiver 2013. Ce cycle vise à créer un espace de discussions et d’échanges autour du terme « radical ». Catégoriques, absolus, parfois irrévocables, engagés, critiques et souvent déterminés à créer du changement en profondeur, le sujet radical et l’action radicale sont au cœur de cette série de rencontres qui auront lieu au département de littérature comparée de l’Université de Montréal. Les propositions de communications, axées tant sur la théorie que sur la création, sont attendues d'ici le 15 juin 2012 afin de mettre en relief la malléabilité apparente de ces deux concepts à travers le temps et les lieux. Communications, expositions, projections, présentations, et performances sont recherchées, en autant que l’œuvre, qu’elle soit littéraire, théâtrale, performative, cinématographique, plastique, etc., soit au cœur de la réflexion.
