European and global responses to the concept of “literary engagement” between 1945 and 1968
ACLA 2020 panel
The question of “engagement” (or commitment) became one of the defining elements of post-WWII literature and was, for a long period, at the center of the discussions about the relationship between aesthetics and politics in several European countries. Commonly associated with the name of Jean-Paul Sartre, the success of the notion of “committed literature,” however, went well beyond the French national space. This panel focuses on the transnational circulation of the concept of “committed literature” and, more broadly, on the circulation of related notions, such as writers’ “responsibility,” as well as on any type of counter-discourse or counter-theory targeting “committed literature.” We would like to explore the different degrees of transnational propagation and dissemination of these debates both in regions that absorbed the intellectual debates taking place in France and in the case of countries which remained more impermeable to them.

Delivering together - the collective cogs of the book pipeline
11th student conference of the Groupe de recherches et d’études sur le livre au Québec (GRÉLQ)
Une pluralité de médiateurs et de prescripteurs interviennent dans la conception et la production de l’objet-livre, qui n’est pas pour autant le résultat d’un simple travail à la chaîne effectué par des techniciens : c’est une œuvre d’art à part entière, sur laquelle tous les agents impliqués ont posé un geste créateur, un « geste éditorial ». En raison des logiques de collaboration et de concurrence qui régissent le monde du livre, ses artisans (écrivains, imprimeurs, éditeurs, réviseurs, libraires, etc.) sont appelés à interagir, qu’ils occupent ou non la même fonction dans la chaîne du livre. L’objectif de ce colloque sera donc d’analyser la production de l’objet-livre dans son ensemble, sous l’angle du rassemblement et de l’action collective.

Globe, revue internationale d'études québécoises, sollicite des propositions d'articles en vue de la préparation d'un numéro thématique consacré au jeu vidéo au Québec. Ce numéro thématique s’inscrit dans la foulée des approches plus locales de l’histoire. Car s’il existe des histoires globales du jeu vidéo telles quePhoenix: The Fall & Rise of Videogames (Herman, 1994), The Ultimate History of Video Games (Kent 2001), The Video Game Explosion: A History from PONG to PlayStation and Beyond(Wolf, 2007) etReplay. The History of Video Games (Donova, 2010), celles-ci se concentrent sur « les gros canons », à savoir les productions américaines, japonaises et européennes. À l’exception du chapitre sur le Canada de Dominic Arsenault et Louis-Martin Guay dans l’ouvrage Video Games Around the World (Wolf, 2015) et de quelques articles publiés dans des revues, entre autres sur les jeux indépendants (comme le Vol 7, No 11 publié en 2013 par la revueLoading...de l’Association canadienne d’études vidéoludiques), on a peu écrit sur la création vidéoludique québécoise pourtant fort riche.

The Presence of Women Editors in the Press Industry (1850-1950)
This panel is part of the 49th annual Northeast modern language association (NeMLA) convention which will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from the 12th until the 15th of April 2018. We wish to examine the active participation of women in the public dialogue through the prism of their periodical publications. By looking into their practices of textual transfer, their editorial strategies and the transnational networks that they established, this panel sheds light on the content, structure, and functions of the periodical press in the long 19th century. Scholars are encouraged to explore the ways in which women’s journals shaped socio-cultural transitions by conducting comparative research across nations, cultures, and historical periods.

Par l’intermédiaire de l’art et des images, le colloque propose d’interroger les formes de l’agir en condition hyperconnectée. Qu’elles prennent place dans l’espace urbain, dans le cyberespace ou à la jonction des deux, nombreuses sont les pratiques artistiques qui mettent en jeu les transformations induites par la connexion sur notre (in)capacité d’agir, individuelle et collective. Les études portant sur les cultures visuelles et matérielles propres à cette condition hyperconnectée actuelle apportent également un éclairage nécessaire à ces questions qui concernent notre rapport avec l’espace public sous toutes ses formes.

Music-Records-Radio in French-Speaking Countries (1900-1950)
In the space of a few decades, from 1900 to 1950, musicians’ and listeners’ relationship to music was transformed with the advent of records and then the radio. The conference seeks to provide researchers an opportunity to explore collectively the relationship between music, records, and the radio by examining the following issues: the interactions between different forms of media and intermedial transfer; the ways in which composers and performers adapted to the new means of dissemination; and the social, economic, and aesthetic consequences on musical activity with the arrival of records and the radio. Restricting the context to French-speaking countries will make it possible to establish comparisons as well as connections between various record “markets” and the radio networks that developed during the period.

This trans-disciplinary research project is interested in exploring the complex and fluid relationships between hope and trust, and how might betrayal play a productive role in this bond. As concepts, ideas or simple notions, hope and trust seem to have simultaneously lost contemporary currency while being ever more necessary in our every day lives. We seem resigned to a kind of hopelessness, seem unwilling to trust others and are ready and willing to betray whomever we might need to in order to advance our own careers or personal agendas. Yet new technologies require us to place personal information online, to communicate with strangers, and to hold onto the promise of happiness. How are our maintenance of hope, our need to trust and our willingness to betray intertwined? How are these concepts evolving?
