  Les mémoires et traditions dans la Caraïbe et dans l’Amérique latine ont toujours fait l’objet de discussions houleuses, ont toujours déchaîné des convulsions, tant elles ont été affectées par des processus d’amnésies et d’assimilation, portés directement par le colonialisme, le positivisme, l’impérialisme, la globalisation, le néo-colonialisme. 2020, année cruciale pour les pays occidentaux ou occidentalisés, nous offre la possibilité de questionner le modèle capitaliste, soit l’apport de l’occidentalisation à l’édification sociale des peuples, à savoir s’il est l’unique système économique, le seul modèle politique obligé, permettant d’envisager le progrès, l’évolution, le modernisme dans nos régions.

  Confederation and national duality

  Le 150^e anniversaire de la Confédération constitue un moment opportun de réfléchir à la portée, au sens, aux succès et aux problèmes de notre régime politique. Certains en feront l’éloge, d’autres, le procès ; quoiqu’on en dise, le rapport du Canada à la dualité nationale, une philosophie développée surtout par des penseurs canadiens-français pour dépeindre le Canada comme un « pacte entre deux peuples fondateurs », mérite une réflexion sérieuse. Ce colloque vise à faire le point sur l’idée de dualité autant dans les débats intellectuels que dans ses représentations institutionnelles. Il s’adresse aux historiens, aux politologues, aux sociologues, aux juristes et à tous ceux et celles qui étudient le Canada dans son rapport à la dualité.

  Borders, walls and violence

  Costs and Alternatives to Border Fencing

  More border walls and border fences are being built every year all across the world. Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, and Tunisia are among the latest to announce yet another border fence. Twenty-five years ago it was believed that the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reconfiguration of international relations would open an age of globalization in which States would become obsolete, ushering in a world without borders. In the wake of 9/11, however, borders came back in light, new borders were created and new border walls erected. In the wake of the Arab Spring, came even more border barriers and walls, symbols that were thought to have disappeared with the collapse of the bipolar international system. Today, they reinforce borderlines the world over, transforming both soft and semi-permeable borders alike into sealed, exclusionary hard borders. Walls are symbols of identity reaffirmation, markers of State sovereignty, instruments of dissociation, locus of a growing violence.

  African and Gypsy categorizations in France

  The process of ethnicization in ordinary discourse

  In France, Bulgarian and Romanian migrants identified as “Roma” and usually living in slums are regularly the targets of categorizations, of rejection and of xenophobic violence. Even though other immigrated populations, such as Africans, have been subject to this type of ostracism for some time, the spectre of racism and xenophobia has spread under the effect of the diffusion of a number of political and media discourses. Whether coming from the right or the left of the political spectrum, these differentialist discourses stem from the highest level of the State, and have been regularly relayed by the media, thus legitimizing their presence within the French public space.

  Questioning Spaces of Citizenship in Latin America and the Caribbean

  Latin American History Graduate Student Conference

  Scholars often invoke citizenship as an analytic frame to understand the history of Latin America and the Caribbean. While the concept can encompass a broad range of topics, this conference will focus on the spaces where individuals and groups come into contact with the institutions and symbols of the state. These spaces may be physical places, institutional settings, discursive realms, or other fora. In this graduate student conference, we will ask how such spaces of citizenship are constructed, delimited, and at times rejected, and how the terms of interaction and negotiation in these spaces are defined and re-defined.

  The evaluation of theoretical approaches of the analysis of civil conflict in Africa

  81st ACFAS conference

  Dans une approche pluridisciplinaire, ce colloque envisage moins de proposer de nouvelles hypothèses explicatives qu’une évaluation critique des nombreuses hypothèses concurrentes sur l’analyse des conflits en Afrique. Outre une contribution à la recherche académique sur les lumières et les ombres des analyses des conflits en Afrique, ce colloque entend également contribuer à une meilleure épistémologie ainsi qu’à une meilleure méthodologie de l’étude des conflits civils tout en prenant en compte les dynamiques des sociétés africaines ainsi que les enjeux géopolitiques et stratégiques de ces conflits.
