The economy of stone in the Meuse valley and surrounding regions (1st century BC - 18th century)

The first edition of conferences dedicated to stone economics during the historical periods, which was held in Nancy in 2015, underlined the vitality of the research carried out about this subject, as illustrated by the recent works led in Lorraine. The Stone by Stone series of meetings aim to promote the relevance of stone economics research and to facilitate discussions about the topic, through a cycle of international conferences held every three years. The upcoming Stone by Stone II Symposium will be held in Namur and Dinant in December 2018. It will be co-organized by the University of Namur (AcanthuM – ILEE), by the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL), by the University of Brussels (ULB/VUB), by the University of Lorraine, by the INRAP and by the Maison du Patrimoine medieval mosan, and by the AWAP (Agence wallonne du Patrimoine).

Towards a material history of restoration work (1830-1914)

À la suite des travaux de Max Dvořák sur la notion de « valeur historique » et dans la continuité des recherches de Louis Grodecki sur « les monuments dans l’histoire », il ne s’agit plus aujourd’hui d’aborder le chantier de restauration aux seules fins discriminantes de la « critique d’authenticité ». Le chantier de restauration implique en effet des questions matérielles, techniques, économiques, sociales et spirituelles qui relèvent de l’histoire, de l’archéologie – « Archéologie des restaurations » récemment valorisée par Nicolas Reveyron – de l’anthropologie et de la sociologie.

The Gothic structures: in pursuit of balance

Leur stabilité et leurs confortations à l’époque médiévale

Raised from 1242 to replace the Romanesque choir, the choir of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Tournai (Belgium) is resolutely an exemple of Gothic architecture the most advanced in the French royal domain. Besides a number of reasons, the verticality and slenderness of the construction, the fasciculated pillars, the buttressing thrown outward shows this well. Without participating in the rivalry of the first half of the 13th century to build the tallest cathedral, it plays nevertheless on the extremely lightweight of the construction, which was trying to reach on other contemporary sites. Beauvais is the most famous case, but it is not unique. In Tournai, as elsewhere, important stabilizing work was needed on these monuments that had « exceeded the limit ».

Ce colloque, issu d’une collaboration entre l’université libre de Bruxelles et l’académie royale de Belgique, a pour intention de réunir historiens, historiens de l’art et de l’architecture et archéologues autour des divers statuts de la grande maison urbaine de la période moderne : construction, habitation, patrimoine, repère urbain, médium politique et social. Il s'agit de faire le point sur la recherche récente et de dégager de nouvelles perspectives dans une approche pluridisciplinaire.

Building techniques in writings on architecture between Italy, France and the Low Countries

Les techniques constructives dans les écrits d’architecture entre Italie, France et anciens Pays-Bas

This conference focuses on the connection between architectural theory and construction techniques. The first part deals with the analysis of technical descriptions, their relationship with building practice, their rhetorical value, and their international circulation and adaptation. It comprises case studies from Italy, France, and the Low Countries. The second part approaches the same problem in a comparative perspective and takes the form of round-table discussions structured around three themes: the relationship between technical writings and construction practices, the literary aspects of technical digressions, and the translation and adaptation of Italian treatises.

Beirut, paradigm of a universally latent civil war

Colloque organisé par Les Halles de Schaerbeek, en collaboration avec le Département d’architecture, d’urbanisme et de planification (ASRO) de la K.U. Leuven, avec le soutien du RITS. Si la ville de Beyrouth connut une déchirante guerre civile de 1975 à 1990, elle reste le lieu de conflits latents, susceptibles de s’enflammer à tout instant. Cette latence de la guerre affecte le langage et la mémoire et crée des lignes de démarcations mentales. La production artistique en porte les traces, de même que la physionomie de la ville elle-même, la répartition de ses quartiers, l’occupation de ses espaces publics. Le colloque « Beyrouth, paradigme de la guerre civile universelle latente » invite un écrivain, des architectes et urbanistes, des anthropologues et politologues de Beyrouth à approfondir ces questions.
