  Male Bonds in Nineteenth-Century Art

  The conference will probe, challenge and expand upon the academic narrative of male homosociality through the lens of art history. It aims to establish an overview of a variety of male bonds that underpinned nineteenth-century art, and to consider the theoretical and methodological implications of the study thereof. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies: an interdisciplinary exchange of which the full potential for scholarship on the nineteenth century remains to be exploited.

  Male bonds in nineteenth-century art

  Male Bonds is a two-day international conference that aims to explore the place of male bonds in nineteenth-century artistic practice and visual arts. The conference invites participants to reflect on the ways in which changing notions of masculinity and male sexuality impacted forms of sociability between men in the artistic scene of the long nineteenth century. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies.

  Journée d’étude internationale

  Cette journée d’étude internationale, organisée sous forme de séminaire doctoral interacadémique, a pour sujet l’étude de la contribution des femmes (artistes, écrivains et cinéastes) à l’élaboration des discours critiques sur l’art. Privilégiant la dimension historique et l’ouverture théorique, il s’agira d’interroger le champ des arts plastiques, de la littérature et du cinéma, du XIXe au XXIe siècle, sans privilégier d’espace culturel précis.

  Domesticity and Religion

  La nouvelle historiographie socio-religieuse a mis en question la thèse de la sécularisation et la dichotomie entre un domaine public et un domaine privé. Néanmoins, au 19ème et la première moitié du 20ème siècle l’idéologie de la « domesticité » se répand et la famille devient plus que jamais le lieu où les pratiques religieuses prennent forme et dès lors un élément clé dans la formation des identités socio-religieuses des hommes et des femmes. Ces journées d’études veulent analyser les différentes modalités selon lesquelles hommes et femmes organisèrent leur vie et éducation religieuse en famille, et l’impact des structures domestique, y compris l’architecture et les interactions privé - public.
