Christian-Muslim Missionary Encounters, Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries
Mission and Modernity Research Academy (MiMoRA#3)
The study of missionary work occupies a central place in the interdisciplinary body of scholarship on relations and exchanges between Christianity and Islam in pre-modern as well as modern times. Most notably from the nineteenth century onwards, missions became an essential aspect of the globalization and modernization of these two ‘world religions’. Scholars from various disciplines have discovered the missionary encounter as a ‘space’ par excellence to observe and analyze Christian-Muslim interactions, which range from rejection and conflict to dialogue and mutual exchange. This research requires the breaching of the boundaries between disciplines, languages, scripts, archival heuristics, geographical and chronological specialisms; and the creation of an interdisciplinary scholarly dialogue. The aim of this international and multidisciplinary week-long research academy is to stimulate further critical study of the multilateral research on Christian-Muslim contacts and relationships in missionary contexts.

Comment comprendre les tensions majeures qui surviennent aujourd’hui sans une compréhension plus précise et mieux ancrée de la tradition islamique et de ses contextes, mais aussi dans ses lectures croisées et ses réinterprétations externes ?

Blasphemy and violence. Interdependencies since 1760
Liberas (Ghent, Belgium), in conjunction with the School of History, Religion and Philosophy at Oxford Brookes University (Oxford, United Kingdom) and the Leibniz Institute of European History (Mainz, Germany), organises an international colloquium devoted to the interdependency between blasphemy and violence in modern history. Both young and established scholars will focus on specific incidents of blasphemy and sacrilege in Europe and the Arab world.The eve preceding the conference (4 March), internationally renowned expert Alain Cabantous will give a keynote lecture in French on blasphemy and sacrilege during the French Revolution.

Encounters with subalternity and resilience
The Research Network on Christian Churches, Culture and Society (www.ccsce.eu) fosters historical research on the interaction of religion, culture, and society in Europe from the second half of the eighteenth-century until the present. CCSCE aspires to a renewed approach to religious history, implementing a broad and transnational European perspective. It aims to develop a durable and multidisciplinary research community on the subject, involving both senior and promising young scholars. On 6 and 7 July 2020 CCSCE, in cooperation with KADOC-KU Leuven, is organising an international conference on Religion, social commitment, and female agency. Producing and publishing theology in the Catholic world (from the Restorations to Vatican II)
L’histoire de la théologie contemporaine commence à voir émerger un renouvellement d’approches. À côté de l’analyse d’un objet particulier dans le discours théologique, d’autres recherches explorent le statut de la théologie et de son énonciation, ainsi que le statut des théologiens, dans une démarche d’histoire sociale et culturelle des savoirs. Ces études ont montré à quel point l’histoire de la théologie demeure trop dépendante du « grand récit » construit par les théologiens eux-mêmes, lequel s’impose aux historiens du religieux. Ce colloque entend poursuivre dans ce sens et cherche à rassembler des historiens travaillant sur la production et la publication des savoirs théologiques, du temps des restaurations européennes à la période du Concile Vatican II, période décisive pour la reconfiguration de la place des théologiens dans le monde des savoirs et des savants, ainsi que dans les églises.

Current Perspectives on Ibn ʿArabī and “Akbarī” Thought
The aim of this meeting is to bring together confirmed and emerging specialists in order to gain some perspective on the current academic research on Ibn ʿArabī and “Akbarī” thought and to discuss research directions for the future. It will also bring to light questions arising from the reading and use of Ibn ʿArabī’s ideas today, taking into account the new approaches and better access to the texts provided by recent tools for textual analysis, and evaluating how our present-day situation shapes our understanding of his works, and conversely, what an informed reading can bring to current re-appropriations and (mis)use.

Blasphemy and Violence. Interdependencies since 1760
Liberas (Ghent, Belgium) in conjunction with the School of History, Religion and Philosophy at Oxford Brookes University (Oxford, United Kingdom) and the Leibniz Institute of European History (Mainz, Germany) announce a Call for Papers for a conference and subsequent edited volume on the subject of blasphemy and violence since 1760. Contributions are invited for a conference to be held at Liberas in Ghent. Papers delivered at this conference will be expected to be nearing completion with a view to subsequent publication in the second volume of ‘New Perspectives on the History of Liberalism and Freethought’ in early 2021, a new peer-reviewed open access series published by De Gruyter Oldenbourg.

Religions and the digital world - metamorphoses and conversions
Il s'agit par ce colloque de penser les formes actuelles de la relation entre pratiques numériques connectées et religions – ou le religieux – quelles qu’elles soient, sous forme d’une triple interrogation : qu’est-ce que les religions font avec le numérique connecté, et qu’est-ce qu’elles font au numérique connecté ? Qu’est-ce que le numérique connecté fait aux religions ? Comment les formes religieuses réapparaissent, transfigurées et plus ou moins métamorphosées, dans les espaces numériques ? Comment les pratiques religieuses se trouvent affectées, si elles le sont, par la digitalisation partielle de la production signifiante religieuse ?

Philosophical Hermeneutics in the Islamicate Context
This conference would like to engage with one specific context among all those which were and still are, as it were, “affected” by philosophical hermeneutics: the Islamicate context. The latter seems particularly relevant: on the one hand because it is intimately intertwined with the Western context; on the other hand because the Islamicate context retains a clear reference to religion that makes its entanglement with philosophical hermeneutics a burning challenge for all parties involved. The universality of the hermeneutic order should be put to the test of the Islamicate context within three different angles: the exegetical aspect, in order to see in what extend philosophical hermeneutics can contribute to rethink the understanding of the Koran in the contemporary context; the interpretative aspect, to address different contemporary attempts to reinterpret the classical – philosophical, spiritual or legal – heritage; the critical aspect, to present different political and critical issues raised by the question of the encounter between philosophical hermeneutics and Islamic thought.

La Faculté de théologie et l’institut de recherche Religions, spiritualités,cultures, sociétés (RSCS), de l’université catholique de Louvain, soutenus par la fondation Sedes Sapientiæ, proposent une bourse de post-doctorat en islamologie, d’une durée de deux ans. La fondation Sedes Sapientiæ offre ainsi la possibilité de poursuivre une recherche approfondie dans le domaine des doctrines de l’islam classique (Coran, théologie, hadith, mystique). La faculté et l’institut permettent à un·e jeune docteur·e la possibilité de travailler au sein d’un réseau international, avec une offre étendue de séminaires, colloques et activités scientifiques.

This research academy will study the theme of christian missionaries, Modernity and education and take place from 13 to 21 September 2018. MiMoRA I will consist of a series of workshops, a methodological session, seminars with keynotes, consultation of Leuven collections (missionary archives and publications at KADOC-KU Leuven and the missionary collections of the Maurits Sabbe Library), and visits to missionary heritage.

Ce colloque entend appréhender la production de manuscrits hagiographiques dans le Nord de la France et dans la Belgique actuelle entre la fin du Moyen Âge et l'époque moderne (XIVe-XVIe siècle). Il s'agira de considérer pour la première fois ensemble les manuscrits écrits en latin, en langue d'oïl et en moyen-néerlandais dans un espace où ils ont été produits en nombre, afin de mieux saisir leurs fonctions et leurs usages en les replaçant dans les transformations sociales et religieuses de leur temps.

The universality of the hermeneutic order should be put to the test of the Islamicate context within three different angles: the interpretative dimension, to address contemporary thinkers from the Islamicate world who have engaged with philosophical hermeneutics; the comparative dimension, in order to deal with possible transactions on the basis of common traits and divergences; and the creative dimension, to present attempts at using philosophical hermeneutics in order to develop new interpretations of canonical or traditional ensembles of texts.

Cette réunion académique a pour objectif de réfléchir sur les multiples facettes de l’alimentation comme manifestation de la distinction et de la différence dans les systèmes religieux. Dans cette journée d’étude on explorera les différentes manifestations de la distinction alimentaire, comme les jeûnes et les interdits, la relation entre la consommation d’aliments et la hiérarchie religieuse, les critères d’élection ou d’exclusion d’aliments comme reflet de l’appartenance à un système religieux ou comme différenciation à l’intérieur du même groupe. Notre perspective est comparative et diachronique.

Cette célèbre formule de Spinoza pourrait servir de blason à ce colloque : il y a une expérience sensible de l’éternité. Ce colloque abordera et traitera le thème de l’expérience de l’éternité à partir des méthodes, des concepts, des théories ou modes d’intelligibilité fournis par la philosophie, la mystique et la clinique.

The research group “Architectural cultures of the recent past” (ARP) of KU Leuven and KADOC, the Documentation and Research Centre on Religion, Culture and Society of KU Leuven, are organizing an international workshop on religion, urban planning and demographic change in post-war Europe as a prelude to an edited volume on this topic, to be published by an international academic press.

Ces dernières années, la thématique « État et religions » s’est particulièrement développée au gré de la diversification des croyances, du pluralisme, de l’immigration, de la sécularisation de la société, de la montée en puissance des droits de l’homme et de la lutte pour la protection d’une société démocratique. Parmi les multiples questions induites par ces différents facteurs, trois axes d’analyse ont été retenus à l’occasion du colloque international réunissant l’université catholique de Louvain, l’université de Rennes et l’université d’Ottawa le 25 novembre prochain.
