Rethinking tobacco history: Commodities, empire and agency in global perspective, 1780–1960
Tobacco was one of the most important globally traded commodities from the 17th century through to the present day, and yet it has received relatively little attention in the historiography of modern empires in comparison to other commodities, such as sugar or cotton. As a result, recent approaches to rewriting the history of European imperialism from a more global perspective have hardly been problematized with regard to the peculiarities of tobacco history. Nowadays, studies no longer understand empire as a rigid relationship between metropole and colonies, but take the dynamics of actors within an empire as seriously as the networks and global processes that crossed imperial borders, or indeed lay beyond them. The conference starts from this assumption.

We invite contributions for our Workshop “Rethinking the Technical and the Human in Global Connectivity”, happening at Humboldt University Berlin, 24-25 May 2019. The materiality of technologies and infrastructures is significant; however, we think their impact on and interaction with societies has to be analysed in a global dimension as well. We hope to establish this approach for the broader field of African History, reacting and bringing attention to a growing interest in these questions indicated in a number of recently developed research projects and publications.

All the Beauty of the World. The European Market for non-European Artefacts (18th-20th century)
In the wake of the Western expansion, a fast growing number of non-European artefacts entered the European market. They initially made their way into princely cabinets of curiosities. Enabled by the forced opening and exploitation of more and more parts of the world and pushed by social and technological changes of the time, the 18th century brought a boom of the market of non-European artefacts in Europe. This came along with the emergence of a broader collecting culture and the development of a rich museumscape. This market and its development in terms of methods and places of exchange and monetary and ideological value of the objects are in the focus of an international symposium that will take place in October 2016 in Berlin.

The objective of the 15th Border Regions in Transition (BRIT) Conference organized by the University of Southern Denmark, the University of Hamburg and the HafenCity University Hamburg on May 17-20 2016 is to rethink the complicated relationships that bind cities, urban development and state borders. The conference will offer a unique opportunity to explore the collaborative or competitive strategies of this odd couple under the current circumstances of globalization.

An international conference on economic history dealing with the question "Regional producers or global players ?" will take place in Mainz on October 6-7 2014. Until now neglected, research on the economic history of the Rhineland-Palatine area will be presented. However, the conference is not limited on the history of this region - in fact, companies from this origin will be compared to producers from other regions and countries. The increasing internationalization of companies is currently an important field of research among historians. From the second half of the 19th century to World War I, the interdependence of the West European economy grew strongly. In the second half of the 20th century, we can observe another globalization push. We were able to win internationally renowned researchers for the papers. Processes of Social Decline among the European Nobility
Le projet D03 « La noblesse pauvre 1700-1900 » du Centre de recherche concertée « Ordres menacés » (SFB 923 « Bedrohte Ordnungen ») de l'université de Tübingen organise les 18 et 19 septembre 2014 un colloque international sur le thème « Processus de déclin social de la noblesse européenne ». On se concentrera sur la petite noblesse dans la période allant du XVIIe siècle au début de la première guerre mondiale. L'objectif du colloque est de rassembler les résultats de recherches historiques sur la noblesse de différents pays européens, axées sur la pauvreté et le déclin social, afin d'établir un lien fructueux entre la recherche sur la pauvreté et sur la noblesse. En outre, il encouragera le dialogue et la mise en contact des chercheurs européens sur la noblesse et il les invitera à mutualiser de nouvelles méthodes et approches de recherche dans un esprit d’échange profitable à tous.

Le colloque est organisé par un groupe d’historiens qui, depuis plusieurs années, mène des recherches dans le domaine de l’histoire de la corruption politique depuis le XIXe siècle. Il repose sur deux postulats: la critique de la corruption ne concerne pas uniquement le politique, mais aussi les acteurs de l'économie, dans leurs liens avec l'État. De plus, une histoire de l’éthique managériale et économique avant la lettre fait encore défaut à ce jour.

"Dodgy dealing" in the world of economics
The history of distorsion and perversions in economics and their prohibition in private businesses
Le colloque est organisé par un groupe d’historiens qui, depuis plusieurs années, mène des recherches dans le domaine de l’histoire de la corruption politique depuis le XIXe siècle. Des études actuelles résultent les observations suivantes : lors des débats sur la corruption en politique, les comportements des entrepreneurs et des entreprises sont régulièrement critiqués, au même titre que le capitalisme industriel moderne est soumis à une critique fondamentale. Le concept de corruption ne recouvre pas seulement la notion de prévarication au sens étroit du terme mais suggère l’éventail plus large de méconduites supposées dans les relations qu’entretiennent le secteur privé d’ une part et les institutions étatiques ou publiques et les hommes politiques de l’autre. Leurs actions conjuguées et leurs interrelations ainsi que le système économique moderne, ont pu être qualifiés selon le verdict moral de « corruption », c’est-à-dire de comportements contraires à l’éthique. Cela vaut particulièrement pour la phase de l’industrialisation intensive entre le milieu du XIXe et le milieu du XXe siècle, quoi que l’on puisse en noter la présence dans les périodes antérieures et postérieures. Dans l’état actuel de la recherche, on ne rencontre cependant que des observations isolées qui, lors de ce colloque, devront être mises de manière méthodique et systématique en relation. -

Dans le cadre du projet de recherche binational sur « Les évacuations dans l’espace frontalier franco-allemand 1939–1945 » (ANR / DFG), un poste de doctorat (wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter, échelon E13, TV-L, 65%) est à pourvoir à l’Université de la Ruhr à Bochum. Nous cherchons un.e jeune historien.ne, parlant français et allemand, pour une recherche comparative sur la dimension économique et / ou sociale des évacuations. -

Ces journées d’études, organisées par l’Institut français d'histoire en Allemagne, avec le soutien de l’Université franco-allemande (UFA) réunissent plusieurs chercheurs, venant de toute l’Europe, pour travailler sur les pratiques de la prédation (pillages, prises de captifs, prélèvements de tributs…), de l’Antiquité tardive au Haut Moyen Âge. Elle vise à étudier le rôle de ces pratiques et des profits de la guerre dans l’organisation et les dynamiques des sociétés et des pouvoirs du Haut Moyen Âge. Une attention soutenue sera ainsi prêtée à la circulation des biens de la prédation, aux modalités de leur redistribution ou de leur partage, à sa place dans la représentation des pouvoirs, ou à l’enjeu qu’elle représente dans les dynamiques de la compétition entre les élites. L’enjeu de cette rencontre, qui réunit des chercheurs issus d’horizons différents, est de replacer ces pratiques dans une réflexion globale sur les structures économiques, sociales, politiques et culturelles des sociétés médiévales. -

Stakeholder Relations from the ”Wirtschaftswunder“ to the Industrial Structural Crisis - 1950’s to the 1980’s
The current economic crisis leads one to question the main objectives companies should be striving for. The possibilities range within a field of controversy between an absolute shareholder orientation and a governance compromise with the different company’s stakeholders. This workshop aims to reassess how far stakeholder relations in different companies prove the existence of a specific West German governance compromise from the 1950’s through the 1980’s. Did companies only have the possibility to meet their stakeholders’ expectations because of their financial scope or did stakeholder orientation rather emanate from attempts to insure the company’s long-term profitability? -
