  Figures and Perspectives on the Mass and the Individual in Capitalist Modernity (19th-21st century)

  How is it possible to use the notion of mass without making it collapse into a complete condemnation of collective action or into an acritical celebration of the crowd? From there on, the relationship between mass and individual can be addressed in many fashions: Are there any specific ways for the mass to organize itself as a political subject? What are means whereby artworks represent and transform the linkage between  mass and individual? What are the mutations undergone by the mass qua object of the social sciences? How does capitalist modernity affect the moral and psychic autonomy of individuals?

  University and politics - lecturers, students and public powers in Europe (1848-1945)

  Professeurs, étudiants et pouvoirs publics en Europe (1848-1945)

  Cette journée d’études ambitionne, sur la période d’un siècle allant des révolutions de 1848 à la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, d’interroger la relation entre l’université et le politique en Europe. Onze communications permettront de réfléchir sous de multiples angles aux liens hétérogènes entre acteurs du champ universitaire, qu’ils enseignent, étudient ou administrent, et acteurs du champ politique, dans l’espace européen. Une problématique centrale qui traverse l’ensemble des exposés, qu’ils traitent d’un individu, d’un groupe d’individus ou d’une discipline, est celle de l’autonomie du champ universitaire, de sa constitution et de son éventuelle limitation, par rapport au champ politique, dans une période où l’institution universitaire est en pleine expansion et transformée par la formation de nouvelles disciplines.

  Difference, diversity, diffraction: confronting hegemonies and dispossessions

  10th European Feminist Research Conference

  The overall theme of the conference is “Difference, Diversity, Diffraction: Confronting Hegemonies and Dispossessions”, which refers to a topic central to Gender Studies: the social construction of difference and inequality on the one hand, and the recognition of marginalised experiences and subject positions on the other. In the face of growing right-wing populist movements, anti-feminist and anti-queer backlash, forced migration, austerity and climate change, these concerns take on renewed relevance. The subtitle “Confronting Hegemonies and Dispossessions” is a call to reflect on, challenge and defy the hierarchies, subjugations and deprivations that are linked to structural differentiations and to find affirmative ways of dealing with difference , diversity and diffraction. The conference is committed to promoting a feminist anti-racist accessible space for all genders.

  Marx, Semiotics and Political Praxis

  This special issue of Open Cultural Studies will return to the work of Karl Marx to reflect on and engage with his coherent articulation of words and their use, of words and actions, and of the intellectual and the political. The coherence of his discourse and praxis offers tools to think through, if not seek to transform, the alienated semiotic landscape of our times as described by the Frankfurt school philosopheers, Jean Baudrillard, Frederic Jameson, Sloterdijk and Slavoj Žižek. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth, in this special issue we want to honour his 11th Thesis on Feuerbach: "philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it."

  Making children?

  Human procreation and family planning and the challenge of the evolution in values in the 20th century

  Aidé par les progrès technologiques et médicaux accomplis au cours du XX^e siècle dans le domaine de la contraception, de l’avortement, de la stérilisation et de l’aide médicale à la procréation, l’homme (et, de plus en plus, la femme) des sociétés occidentales s’est progressivement approprié la maîtrise de sa fécondité. Cependant, cette appropriation ne s’est pas déroulée sans heurts. Ainsi, la question de savoir par qui, quand, en quel nombre, dans quelles conditions, dans quel but mettre des enfants au monde, et même si on devrait le faire, a fait l’objet de réflexions individuelles et de conflits sociaux et a pu recevoir, au cours des décennies, des réponses fort différentes.

  Le séminaire ne se limitera pas à une définition étroite des termes de « politique » et d’ « altérité » et cherchera au contraire à les redéfinir. La politique peut être abordée sous de nombreux aspects, en termes de régimes politiques (démocratique ou autoritaire), d’institutions (partis, organes représentatifs, administrations), de mouvements, de discours. Les axes de recherche suivants peuvent être adoptés : Faire société / paix sociale / minorités réelles et symboliques ; culture dominante / subculture / subversion / mouvements alternatifs ; étrangeté / queer / représentations du corps ; modes d’expression de l’altérité.

  Zwischen Moskau und Europa. Die europäischen kommunistischen Parteien 1945 bis heute

  Between Moscow and Europe. European Communist Parties from 1945 to the present day

  Cet atelier a pour objectif d’apporter une lumière nouvelle sur divers aspects de l'histoire des partis communistes d'Europe après 1945. Des études de cas seront monopolisées à cette fin. Les relations entre les partis communistes de l'Est et l'Ouest, ainsi que les relations entre partis au sein du bloc de l’Ouest seront également prises en considération. Dans ce contexte, les images de l’Europe au sein des partis communistes ainsi que leurs visions de l’intégration européenne feront l’objet d’une attention particulière. De la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale en passant par les crises de 1956, 1968, 1980-1981 et 1989, nous tenterons de discuter les représentations de l’Europe et les transformations qu’elles subissent en fonction de ces césures.

  Perspectives on a European Social, Cultural, and Protest History of the 1980s

  On May 6th 1980, a group of new recruits was publicly sworn in with the German Bundeswehr in the Bremen soccer stadium. As a reaction, street battles of hitherto unknown dimensions between left-wing activists and (military) police took place in the area near the stadium. Since the conflicts surrounding the newly built nuclear power plant of Brokdorf a couple of years earlier, a certain "tradition" of militant mass protest had already existed. Yet with the so-called "Bremen Bundeswehr riots" for the first time protests of a comparable scale took place within a bigger city. Viewed in the following years as the beginning of the German autonomous movement, this inner city riot marked at the same time a European phenomenon.
