Call for papers - Political studies
Narrating violence: Making race, making difference
In collaboration with The George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights, and Conflict Prevention at the American University of Paris, University of Turku invites scholars, students, practitioners, and activists from all fields to take part in the Winter symposium of the Nordic Summer University Study Circle Narrative and Violence. This symposium will explore questions on the production, practice, and instrumentalization of violent narratives about racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual, and political minorities and groups. While multiple theoretical perspectives will be included in both locations, the symposium will have a broader international focus at the American University of Paris and will facilitate discussions primarily pertaining to the Nordic and Baltic sphere at the University of Turku.

Do what you can with what you have
How to build capacity and community for Digital Humanities teaching and research
In this two-day workshop, we will share what we have done at UCLA to build real capacity and community for digital humanities teaching and research. Drawing from our experience creating the Scholarly Innovation Lab (SIL), on Day 1 we will share our story and offer guidance and best practices for building a DH lab with modest investment. On Day 2 we will introduce and discuss two of our more successful areas of practice – 3-D modelling for cultural heritage, and Zoom pedagogy for course sharing. The format will be conversational. Our goal is to help cultivate practical approaches for next steps at the University of Helsinki.

A global history of free ports
Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)
Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVIth to the early XXth century.

Moral Machines? Ethics and Politics of the Digital World
As our visible and invisible social reality is getting increasingly digitalized, the question of the ethical, moral and political consequences of digitalization is getting ever more pressing. All technologies mark their environment, but digital technologies do so much more intimately than any previous technologies since they promise to think in our place. But how do they really think? What happens when they are entrusted with moral decisions? Is a moral machine possible? Who is responsible of the social and political environments and situations digitalization creates? Should they be politically controlled and how? The conference Moral machines calls together scholars in philosophy, humanities, literature and art in order to discuss these pressing issues.

This growth – which accelerated after each World War, and became a truly global phenomenon in the second half of the XXth century – necessitated the construction of large and well-equipped office buildings, which were often grouped together in the "administrative districts" of capitals and other major cities.

Grammar and genre: interfaces and influences
This symposium aims to study the interfaces between grammar and genre: the purpose is to investigate how genre affects grammatical choices. How are genre distinctions reflected in grammar, be it for example literary vs. media genres, or distinctions such as argumentative, informative, persuasive, expressive, or narrative genres? Is a specific genre belonging to a particular domain, e.g. sport news vs. economy news, characterized by certain grammatical choices? Possible genre distinctions are various, and both empirical questions related to the theme and more theoretical implications and reflections thereof are welcome. -

Cultural, societal and individual perspectives on adult education and training in Europe
Le prochain séminaire du réseau de l'ESREA « History of Adult Education and Training » sera organisé à Turku (Finlande), les 8 et 9 juin 2009, couplé avec le colloque du réseau finlandais d’histoire de l’éducation. Il a pour thème : le cours de la vie et la formation (learning) dans l’histoire : perspectives culturelles, sociétales et individuelles dans l’éducation et la formation des adultes en Europe. L’appel à communications est disponible sur le site de l’ESREA : http://www.esrrea.org. Les travaux devront être présentés en anglais (ou au moins pour une part, de manière bilingue). Date limite d'envoi des propositions : 1er mars 2009. -

Les collocations dans les discours spécialisés
Cet atelier, organisé par le laboratoire "Lexiques Dictionnaires Informatique" (UMR 7187 - CNRS, Paris-Nord et Cergy-Pontoise) dans le cadre du congrès Europhras 2008, s'intéressera aux faits collocationnels dans les discours spécialisés. Les cinq tables rondes prévues aborderont (i) les aspects méthodologiques de l'extraction de collocations spécialisées à partir de larges corpus, (ii) les relations entre terminologie et collocations, ces dernières pouvant être envisagées comme le mode d'emploi du terme, (iii) le rôle des collocations dans le discours juridique - avec une attention particulière accordée au(x) discours des droits de l'homme, (iv) les collocations dans les discours scientifique, en particulier en tant qu'éléments d'aide à la rédaction technique et scientifique et (v) la question de la saisie termino- et lexicographique de ces unités langagières au sein de dictionnaires, glossaires et bases de données. -

Atelier dans le cadre du Congrès Europhras 2008
Après des débuts presque entièrement consacrés au seul terme, la recherche sur les discours spécialisés, dont l’évolution a suivi celle de la recherche en sciences du langage, a élargi son champ d’investigation pour s’intéresser progressivement à la phrase puis au texte spécialisé considéré par beaucoup à l’heure actuelle comme l’unité d’analyse fondamentale, quand ce n’est pas unique, au sein de laquelle cristallisent tous les traits caractéristiques de la communication entre experts. Sans vouloir s’engager à rebours sur cette route menant du terme au texte, cette proposition d’atelier souhaite faire une halte à un niveau intermédiaire, celui de la mise en discours du terme pour l’étude de laquelle la rencontre entre phraséologie et terminologie ne peut être que bénéfique. -

Langue, discours, hybridité et identités
Cette conférence bilingue internationale (français et anglais) se veut être un forum de discussion sur les langues véhiculaires (LV). Trois objectifs principaux ont été définis : 1. Faire le lien entre les approches théoriques et de recherche sur l’utilisation des LVs dans des contextes peu étudiés tels que le quotidien (couples binationaux, amis communicant dans une ou des LV/s) ; les études (à l’étranger ou chez soi) et le monde du travail (idem). 2. Explorer les impacts de l’utilisation des LVs sur les représentations et créations identitaires (soi et autre) d’utilisateurs de LVs, et de ceux qui sont témoins de cette utilisation, dans différentes zones géographiques, professionnelles et sociales. 3. Stimuler la recherche sur les LVs en s’inspirant, entre autres, des recherches et réflexions théoriques sur l’anglais lingua franca. -
