Exploring ‘francophone’ environmental justice approaches
Anglo-american and francophone environmental justice approaches have largely evolved in parallel, both conceptually and politically. While anglophone EJ scholars have recently called for enlarging the conceptual underpinnings of environmental justice studies, ‘francophone’ influences have largely remained a blind spot in the literature. This panel focusses on the distinctiveness (or lack thereof) of French/francophone approaches to environmental justice. We hope to move this conversation forward by establishing cross-Channel connections between academic environmental justice networks in the UK and in France.

TaPRA Theatre, Performance and Philosophy Research Event
In On Being Included, Sara Ahmed argues that institutional commitments to diversity may be considered “non-performatives”: they do not bring about what they name. Institutions run diversity workshops and committees, outreach programmes and ‘participatory’ or ‘inclusive’ agendas, but where does the gesture stop, and where does it begin? How may we understand the choreography and the dramaturgy of institutional outreaching? How can we begin to detour this language so as to rethink the role of the university – and of artistic practice – in public life today? Does the university have a role to play in public life, and what might that be? Does this equate with ‘outreach’? What is the relationship between artistic practice and what may be termed ‘creative research’?

Urban governance and its disorders: Corruption in the cities
The issue of corruption has, of late, become of growing interest to social scientists and historians although research in corruption in urban settings less so and the relationship of corruption to urban governance even less. The complexity of governance as distinct from government has raised questions, particularly since the 1980s, as state governments have sought relationships with private and voluntary actors to manage and deliver services and other public goods.

The Commons, plant breeding and agricultural research
How to face the challenges of an increasing world population ant the preservation of agrobiodiversity
The joint challenges of food safety and conservation of agrobiodiversity are making us rethink the issue of agricultural production. We have to produce more, but especially better in order to sustain biological diversity, mitigate climate change and adapt to it. This prospect urgently calls for the development of a sustainable crop production system that relies less on natural resources (soils, wateraquifer), fertilizers and protection products. There are probably many ways to address these challenges, and it is undisputed that science and technology have a major role to play in this respect.

Convocatoria de ponencias - Américas
Radical Americas Symposium 2015
The aim of the event is to bring a range of disciplinary and geographical perspectives to bear on radicalism throughout the Americas. Our definition of radicalism is a broad one, encompassing both political radicalism as an object of study, and radical analytical approaches to the societies and cultures of the Americas. We welcome proposals that deal with any aspect of radicalism, from the democratic and republican radicalisms of the nineteenth century; to the socialist, anarchist, communist, and populist radicalisms of the twentieth century; as well as contemporary identity politics, social movements, and twenty-first century radicalisms.

Representations of Rurality in Crime Fiction and Media Culture
Interdisciplinary Approaches to "Setting the Scene"
The Institute for Collaborative Research in the Humanities at Queen’s University organises a two day Symposium in June 2015 (15 & 16th) as part of its theme of "Creativity in Imagined and Material Worlds". Devoted to representations of the rural, it will bring together studies in crime fiction and media culture looking at a variety of outlets such as fiction, film, television, comics, games and many others and inspect their various engagements with the concept of "rurality". Interdisciplinary papers are welcomed, but not contained to, Anthropology, Modern Languages, English, Film and Media Studies, History, Cultural Studies, Historical/Cultural/Rural Geography, Sociology, Spatial Planning. By bringing together an interdisciplinary group we will address how cultural constructions of the rural often ‘set the scene’ for crime fiction.

African Spatial mobility, colonial memory and patterns of social differentiations
Panel of the African Studies Association of the UK (ASAUK) conference 2014
The aim of this panel is to look at how spatial mobility and the reference to a territorial homeland (‘real’ or ‘imaginary’) influence the processes of appropriation, reappropriation and disapprioriation of colonial memory in the African diasporas. In a context of the liberation of subalterns memories, many authors consider that slavery and colonization have become since the 2000s, the controversial memorial repositories in both Europe and the United States as in Africa. However, processes of selection, denial and invisibility remain, particularly in old European cities. The emergence of new migratory routes, particularly overseas, can sometimes be associated to liberating acts from social actors fleeing multiple discriminations they have experienced or are afraid of in Europe.

Ambiance and Atmosphere in Translation
After "Ambience and Urban Practices", and "Ambience and Criticism", this third meeting of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche funded project "Enigmas of contemporary urban mobility”, organized within the framework of the International Ambiances Network, will develop a conversation between ambiance, atmosphere and translation. But how to translate? If translation is understood as a practice of "linguistic hospitality", as an experience of transition and mediation, what form might translation take? How might, in other words, the transition occur between the "daily" word and the word of the "expert", between that of the "living" and that of the "foreign"? How to make shareable experiences beyond the singularity expressed in different languages and cultures? What media or combination of media could help us achieve this? -

Convocatoria de ponencias - Etnología, antropología
This conference will explore the relationship between music and migration by providing new insights into the creative practices and life-stories of migrant artists across the globe. A core theme of the conference will be the motivations and experiences of migrant musicians who leave, return, stay or move beyond their localities. Through the focus on such specific groups of migrants the conference aims to throw light on their identifications in their artistic and every-day lives. Past and on-going research shows that patterns of migration are clearly linked to transnational networks. By focusing on the role of migrant musicians within such networks, this conference seeks to analyse and understand the extent to which musicians’ networks may or may not be special cases within migration studies.
