Interdisciplinary perspectives
The conference aims to explore the relationships established between cinema and urban areas. We want to stress the connections woven between cities and cinema, films, fiction and documentaries – important unconventional sources for the understanding of social and cultural contexts. We intend to focus on the modalities used in films to tell stories – through images and speech – concerning cities, territories, and places, residents’ lives in relation to spaces, to buildings, to landscapes, as well as to its urban culture as a whole. The perspective we have chosen for this conference is interdisciplinary and cinema will be considered as a medium to be understood and interpreted in several, possibly comparative, ways.

Storia, cultura, patrimonio
This meeting aims to foster a discussion about the continuities and disruptions which have conditioned the multi-ethnic dimension of our cities. We would like to focus on the specificities of places and time in our millennial history that have produced both tangible and intangible cultural heritage (a heritage which today seems strongly under attack). We aim for a historical perspective – by drawing attention on well-documented case-studies offering comparative insights – without however forgetting to ask ourselves the meaning of our research in the troubled world we live in; without anachronisms, but also without hiding behind the pretext of specialisms, while in front of our eyes the Mediterranean world is more than ever a theatre of death, exclusion, suffering.

The mediation of technologies for a new communication and representation of territory
Session S25 of the 32nd Italian Geographers Congress
The session, which is part of the 32nd Congress of Italian Geographers, will accept both theoretical and methodological proposals exploring the forms through wich ICTs, particularly the Web, have been changing the dynamics of territory representation in the last decades. Among other things, the proposal shoud focus on territorial communication forms for both political and administrative aims (the communication by and for citizens/investors) and tourist and cultural purposes (the communication by and for tourists/visitors).

Italian Association for Middle Eastern Studies (SeSaMO) Annual Conference - Panel 12
This panel focuses on the renewed forms to build the city in the MENA region (‘environmental planning’, ‘resilient urbanism’, ‘responsive urbanism’, participatory and ‘collaborative’ initiatives, ‘sustainable’ urbanism…). The panel will tackle two types of spaces: informal settlements, where experimental forms and new methods are at work, and major eco-projects which have adopted in recent years ecological processes, along with global strategies. The major research hypothesis is that the MENA region shows at least since the 2000s new forms of urbanism that, to varying degrees, bring weak but maybe harbinger/forerunner signals of change and innovation, driven by the concepts of environment and sustainability. This is valid for both urban governance and the theoretical underpinnings of it, whereby professional training and the learning ways of doing, thinking and working on the city, shows some progressive changes. The panel will seek to understand why, however, the MENA seems to experience difficulties in ‘refreshing its software’ on regional, national and local theory and practice of urban planning.

Between Practices and Theories
In our conference we intend to question the modalities according to which tourist spaces are lived, analyzed and interpreted. The interventions not only of anthropologists, semioticians and geographers, but also of other specialists, are particularly welcome to examine different tourist phenomena starting from the perspective of space. The fundamental principle upon which we wish to base our interrogation is founded on a precise anthropological conception of space. Besides being an abstract concept, in our perspective space constitutes an active element of cultural modeling: space is not a neutral container within which human actions are accomplished independently from its cultural shaping, but a real and true meaningful feature contributing to structure human actions and give them sense inside a society. If we follow this hypothesis, the reflection on tourist spaces takes on a particularly decisive role for many disciplines and for the definition of culture(s) in a more and more globalized world. -
