Contending Representations: Questioning Republicanism in Early Modern Genoa (1559-1684)
In the past thirty years, several studies have been devoted to the political and cultural flowering of the republic of Genoa during the so-called ‘siglo de los Genoveses’, between 1528 and 1630, when Genoa became the hub of European trade and an important epicenter of artistic and literary production. Yet little attention has been granted to the cultural and economic crisis that followed or to how Genoese republican state power was represented during the long seventeenth century, especially in relation to neighbouring polities. To address this gap, the conference will explore how the Genoese Republic shaped its political image between 1559 – the year of the publication of Oberto Foglietta’s Delle cose della repubblica di Genova – and 1684, when Genoa was bombed by the French. We intend to address questions such as how did Genoese politicians and men of letters represent their homeland? How was Genoa represented by the Genoese community in Spain or in the Low Countries? How was its political system conceived by other Italian and non-Italian political writers? And how did prevailing depictions of absolutism influence republican rhetoric?

Urban peripheries of European cities: Social institutions, policies, and territories
In today’s context, debates and interventions about the urban peripheries of European cities are multiplying. For this reason, the present international conference aims at contributing to the considerations in this field through the analysis of the socio-economic conditions of these territories, with a preference for comparative analyses and case studies presentations referred to the last century or to the present day.

Islands and remoteness in Geography, Law, and Fiction
The conference seeks to explore how, in many ways, islands appear to be “geographical paradoxes”. Indeed, they are spatially remote places, which are, at the same time, bound to a continent by social conventions. The grounds of such puzzle are manifold. It is firstly a matter of spatial area. Secondly, the puzzle depends on how the political power projects authority over circumscribed spatial realms, including non-continental realms.

The proposal relates the renewal of the local scale at the age of globalization, within the world-system, commonly portrayed through the glorification of global cities. For decades, those lasts were regarded as independent from local, regional and national contingencies; they turned out to be vulnerable to shrinking process, a symptom of the global economic change of order and the inadequacy of policies to cope with different scales of interactions: the glocal.

International migrations and labour from the 70s to the present
Since the 70s the presence of migrants in Europe, and especially in Italy, has become a structural issue and has been at the center of the public and political debate. The progressive demolition of welfare systems, the job precariousness, and new consumer lifestyles have generated different responses in terms of regulation of the admissions of foreign citizens in search of a job and their management (housing issues, access to health care, etc.). Both with regard to organization of forms of protection of immigrants in the exercise of theirs fundamental rights, especially in cases of serious discrimination and exploitation (immigrant associations, trade union action, etc.).

Discourse, power and spirit - between reason and emotions

Discourse, power and mind: between reason and emotion
Discourse can be addressed as a vehicle for power, a positioning practice which enlightens the role and the relationship among the speakers. Power is a way of defying and measure relationships and interactions between individuals. These relations and interactions lead one part to affirm its will against another part, no matter on what bases this will is grounded. Language and communication can be seen as tools to define and convey power dynamics, as well as to establish a status quo. Hence, discourse practice analysis is a tool to approach and understand the hierarchical relations and positions in different discourse fields. The relationship between discourse and power implies an interaction between the subjects and their selves. Power positions are often held by influencing the judgment of other people, which requires dealing with their minds.

The lexicalisation of commercial onomastics. Creation, diffusion and integration

Turnarounds, turnarounds everywhere!
Public management in times of political changeovers and volatile public opinions
The Seminar is an area of francophone scientific debate within the annual congress of the major European academic society of public management and administration (European Group for Public Administration EGPA-GEAP). It questions this year the impact on francophone public management of the unexpected events and radical ideas that gather impetus in our societies. What changes can these accelerated trigger? What should we learn for citizens' trust, good governance, and public service delivery? How will public administrations and their managers react? How will this affect their relationship with public service users? Overall, what new issues and solutions confront the francophone and the Napoleonic models of public management? Should we review our research data and models, look for new inflexion points and reinterpretations?

The hinterlands of the Mediterranean

Overlapping perspectives on the history of “ancient forests”
In ecological, economic and social terms, “ancient forests” play numerous roles. Their definition varies not only from country to country but also according to disciplinary fields. Studying “ancient forests” can involve separating “old-growth forests” from “ancient woodland”, forests that have disappeared and, in the case of “current forests”, those that are not actually very old at all! This conference aims to exchange views and ideas on “ancient forests” including both retrospective and prospective issues. Better understanding their past highlights the key issues of their status, protection and promotion in our current societies and opens up new perspectives about the future of « ancient forests ». Foresters, planners, developers, ecologists, biologists, agriculturalists, geographers, historians, philosophers, ethnologists, cartographers, archaeologists, archaeobotanists, sociologists etc., from all backgrounds, are invited to join this debate about our various and varying concepts of “ancient forests”.

Beyond the great beauty. Rescaling heritage and tourism
Intimate relationships exist between the enhancement and preservation of cultural heritage and tourism as a fundamental driver for regional development. The time has come to give due recognition to there scaling processes affecting heritage and tourism destinations, intended both as upscaling and downscaling. Rescaling heritage andtourism destinations can be seen as both a strategy pursued by national and regional agencies, or as unintended consequences of the constant interplay between an increasingly complex array of stakeholders, including cross-national institutions and local communities.

Infrastructures and societies in the Alpes, from Antiquity to the present day

Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics – University of Milan 2013
The 2013 conference theme, "States in Crisis," is an opportunity to ask and answer a broad range of questions about the contemporary state, from its role in and reactions to economic and fiscal crises to the way in which its contours have or have not adapted and changed in concert with the modern economy to its place as a bulwark against or a catalyst for the construction of more market-driven societies. Within the well-established remit of SASE, participants are invited to submit theoretical and empirical contributions, at multiple levels of analysis from the local to the global, drawing from multi-disciplinary socio-economic frameworks.
