    Call for papers - Modern

The postmodern condition. Forty years on

New shape of sharing: networks, expertise, information

A forum on current issues in European librarianship

The New Shape of Sharing: Networks, Expertise, Information continues conversations begun at the New Directions Symposium held in Frankfurt in 2017. This multi-day forum of panel presentations, a poster session, and interactive breakout sessions on key issues facing Western European collections and public services will encourage both structured and unstructured debate. We will advance our understanding of the challenges and initiate action in three areas: design new models for collaborative collection development and services; explore a growing range of content and format types and what they mean for libraries and researchers, and highlight the evolving role of libraries and librarians in the research process.

    Thresholds III – “Avatar”

    Seminar of philosophy of image

Recent evolutions in the contemporary iconoscape have enabled the production of pictures that elicit in the perceiver a strong feeling of “being there”, namely of being incorporated into new and autonomous environments. Subjects relating to such environments are no longer visual observers in front of images isolated from the real world by a framing device; they are experiencers living in quasi-worlds that offer multisensory stimuli and allow interactive sensorimotor affordances. In relation to such quasi-worlds, a key role is played by the avatar, a digital proxy through which subjects interact with synthetic objects or other avatars. The notion and the uses of the avatar are becoming crucial in a variety of disciplines, ranging from philosophy to visual culture studies, anthropology, sociology, cognitive psychology, and neurosciences. Also, they are raising relevant issues in the fields of ethics and politics.

Interarts - mimetic hypertextuality between rewritings and allographic continuity

The last decades have seen an increase in the number of publications concerned with the theme of trans-textuality, meaning the conscious reuse of themes and subjects. A widespread practice during the seventeenth and eighteenth century, trans-textuality was interrupted during the Romantic age only to be relentlessly resumed until  becoming, today, a real trend in literature and other arts, overlapping genres and artistic expressions.

    Call for papers - Africa

Africa narrates itself: media, opinions, influential figures

These days communication and information are characterized by immediacy, speed, and interactivity. Facebook and Instagram accounts, YouTube channels, and blogs transmit a perpetual flow of information, shared videos, pictures, and other content which creates networks and incentivizes sharing in a constantly evolving language. Contemporary mass media therefore ensures that, today more than ever, people in African countries are at the same time autonomous producers and users of a debate, through partly traditional, partly innovative channels, about life in Africa and African communities’ identity, with a tale that travels across the borders of individual countries and the continent itself.

L'Ecole d'été « Communicating politics. Media, Communication, Activism from the French Revolution to the present » se tiendra à Padoue, en Italie, du 19 au 24 septembre 2016.

Building Audiences for the Book in an Age of Media Proliferation

    By the book 3

"By the Book 3" brings together scholars from the field of publishing studies, alongside industry professionals, to examine key issues around the digital transformation of the book, as well as to discuss the developing field of publishing studies. If we examine global book production over the last 70 years, there is a clear discrepancy between the growth in population, the number of titles published, and the number of books sold and lent. This divergent trends in book production and consumption pose a set of pressing questions related to the publishing economy, marketing and skills.

    Immigration: Fear and the Media

Magazine Africa e Mediterraneo No. 82

The issue 82 of Africa e Mediterraneo wants to investigate the challenges brought about by media and political communication, considering as focuses of analysis the communication processes within the European society (both of local media and migrants’ initiatives) and those activated in the African Countries, being aware that the circulation of ideas, images and cultural practices is more and more leading to a growing deterritorialization of the media and their messages and to the consequential crossing of national borders.

    Tracking Innovation through Grey Literature

Fourteenth International Conference on Grey Literature

Innovation is a process manifested in and through grey literature. Both have their origins in knowledge generation and both demonstrate value for government, academics, business and industry through their uses and applications. In a way, innovation and grey literature are two sides of the same coinage. Innovation is the catalyst for positive change and grey literature is the measure of benchmarks in the further process of research and development. The goal of the Fourteenth International Conference on Grey Literature seeks to track the process of innovation by tracing the research life cycle and observing its convergence in the field of grey literature.

    Narrating War

Words and images of war from street singers to the internet

One of the most significant aspects of recent historiographical work on war has been the attention paid to the cultural representations of conflict: the visual representation of war and its memory, language and rhetoric. This historiographical approach towards the subject of war has brought new attention to ways of representing war and the languages used to recount it. The First World War is usually seen as marking a new era; the unusual nature of the violence of this conflict, with the “disappearance of battle” and the mechanization of death, signalling the end of war as a place for generating men’s honour. But other moments in the history of western culture have seen the paradigm of war change in the accounts and narratives of contemporaries. Among these, the period of the Italian Wars of the sixteenth century, when the image of war transformed from a theatre of conflict between chivalric heroes to the anonymous encounters of armies.

Net Powers. Freedom and Control in the age of the web
