Decolonizing Museum Cultures and Collections: Mapping Theory and Practice in East-Central Europe
International conference for heritage scholars and practitioners
This conference brings together curators, artists, scholars, and other intellectuals and cultural activists working on East-Central European heritage, to reflect on how the main trends of decolonial debate are intersecting in practical and theoretical terms with the heritage sector, with a particular focus on museums in the region. The conference will place special emphasis on mapping both the range of colonial histories embedded in, as well as decolonial approaches to, museum collections and practices in East-Central Europe.

This conference aims at rethinking the legacy of 1989 in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) through the prism of its ongoing contestations, with a focus on the current trends and deliberate political efforts that challenge the major achievements of Velvet Revolutions as well as the outcomes of the collapse of the Iron Curtain. 1989 launched a process that continues to this day. Three decades of transformations, crises and setbacks have noticeably changed the shape of Central and Eastern European societies.

DARIAH Annual Event 2019: Humanities Data
The DARIAH Annual Event 2019 thematizes a catalogue of research questions that arise when we speak of Humanities Data. At the very heart of this topic linger questions around the type and amount of data that humanists collect: what kind of data do we have; where is it; and who owns it? Is our data indeed complex, and if so, what makes it complex? How do definitions and conceptualisations of the term ‘data’ resonate with or, perhaps more accurately, alienate us from our conceptions of our source landscape as art and humanities scholars? And, of course, how will the major European policy initiative to build an Open Science Cloud for research data impact upon our practices and opportunities? The upcoming DARIAH Annual Event 2019 combines forms of encounter developed in prior meetings, such as Working Groups meetings, workshops organised by Working Groups and projects, and a Marketplace to exchange ideas around new research projects and infrastructural solutions with an open conference setting.

Genealogies of memory in Central and Eastern Europe
Images as witnesses to history, materialized memories or their active co-creators? The multi-faceted relationship between the past and its visual representations will be the main focus of the 7th edition of the international genealogies of memory conference to be held in Warsaw on 6-8 December. The agenda features inter alia lectures by Ernst van Alphen, Robert Hariman, Constantin Parvulescu and Wojciech Suchocki, as well as Mieke Bal leading the tour of her own video-installations entitled “Dis-Remembered: A Long History of Madness” and “Mis-Remembered: Reasonable Doubt”.

Cultural Literacy in Europe: Second Biennial Conference (CLE2017)
CLE 2017 is dedicated to the issue of motion, which is crucial for the contemporary human condition. The concept of motion captures the state of affairs in Europe today, where seemingly rock-solid arrangements, like the shapes of borders, are being nullified and apparently irreversible processes, like European integration, are turned around and dismantled. It marks our spatial relations, as is clearly visible in the challenges of migration, experiences of social and professional mobility, social movements or tourism. Mobility also has a temporal aspect, which is visible in the processual and performative character of identity, memory or history. The other key term we would like to address is emotion, which aims to contextualize this movement and localize it in human affectivity – feelings, motives and perceptions. Texts and other kinds of representations, the body in movement, forging personal links, living with memories – all these bring motion and emotion together. We believe that the notion of cultural literacy will help us read and comprehend these diverse, changeable phenomena.

Moving Cities: Contested Views on Urban Life
Contemporary cities are spaces and places traversed by a diversity of movements, making them very special locus for analysing society. In times of digital information, conferences are very important spaces to debate current issues, showcase emerging research and discuss new approaches. Our will is to create a cross-disciplinary space of scientific debate open to sociologists and other scientists from other disciplines interested in analysing and understanding urban life in moving cities around the globe. We welcome papers from young and senior academics developing research on cities and urban life, expecting that everyone can take useful insights to their works from their participation in this conference.

Avec l’apport des technologies numériques, le travail en réseaux est aujourd’hui devenu une pratique inévitable de la recherche scientifique. Par définition, le réseau de médiévistes Ménestrel (Médiévistes sur le net : sources, travaux et références en ligne), pratique depuis sa création en 1995 la mise en relation des médiévistes de diverses communautés animés par la préoccupation de fournir, en ligne, un guide critique des ressources disponibles pour la médiévistique en France et dans les pays partenaires du réseau. Cette journée d'études est consacrée aux ressources Internet en matière de manuscrits et de bibliothèques en Pologne et en France, organisée à l'occasion de l'Assemblée générale du réseau de médiévistes « Ménestrel ».

Doctoral researchers for the project Presbyters in the late antique West
Institute of History (University of Warsaw) is looking for two doctoral researchers who will join the team working on the project Presbyters in the late antique West (200-700 AD) run by Robert Wiśniewski. Their job will consist in collecting the evidence for a prosopographical database and conducting, within the project, their own research which will lead to completing the doctoral dissertation (in 4.5 years). The successful candidates will be enrolled in the doctoral programme and awarded a scholarship of 2000 Polish Zloty per month (initially for 2 years, extendable for another 2.5 years).

Phantom Borders in the Political Behaviour and Electoral Geography in East Central Europe
We understand phantom borders as political borders, which politically/legally do not exist anymore but seem to appear in different forms and modes of social action and practices today, as for example voting as one part of political behaviour. The conference deals with historical borders, made visible in discourses and maps concerning political behavior, as for instance in electoral maps. Our aim is to challenge the historical interrelation of current political behaviour, the involvement of geopolitical images, internal as external governance contexts and transnational networks for (re)constructing historical borders as phantom borders. We are interested in case studies especially about East Central Europe, but also in studies from all over the world combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, addressing the main questions of the conference. Case studies may address different levels and scales from local to transnational. -

The cycle of “Genealogies of Memory” seminars is conceived as an introduction to the conference “Regions of Memory” and its aim is to show the regional diversity of memory studies throughout Europe. During the seminar, researchers from Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique will present their papers on some aspects of collective memory in France. -

A comparative perspective on Eastern Europe
Vis-à-vis the lasting memory boom now emerging as a global trend, we are asking then about regionally specific memory processes and research upon them in different parts of the globe. We welcome papers that answer one or more of the following questions: What kind of memory of mass violence accounts for regional specificity? What are the genealogies of collective and individual memories and forgetting related to mass violence in various regions? How and why do these images, narratives, and practices change and evolve? How do they influence the contemporary identity of a given region? And finally, how do scholars describe and interpret them? Do their concepts, categories and approaches follow the established Western patterns of memory studies? -

Mixing National, International and Transnational approaches
L'école d'été est ouverte aux étudiant(e)s de niveau Master 2 et aux doctorant(e)s qui travaillent sur l’histoire de l’Europe aux XIXe et XXe siècles. Son approche est fondamentalement historique, mais s'adresse aux chercheurs de disciplines diverses (sciences sociales et politiques, économie, droit, etc.). Pendant une semaine de débats, nous allons nous interroger sur les changements structurels en Europe et, en particulier, sur le concept de l'européanisation. -

An international team consisting of ten young researchers seeks five new collaborators to for a project entitled « Intercultural transmission of intellectual traditions in the Middle Ages and the early modern period: a comparative study ». The participants are expected to take part in two working symposia in Poland as well as to write a scholarly article in English dealing with a chosen case of intercultural transmission to be published in the collection of texts that is going to be the main result of the project. The participants will receive remuneration in the amount of 3500 PLN (approx. 1000 USD) together with reimbursement of their travel and accommodation during the symposia. PhD students in all disciplines of humanities are invited to submit their applications by 10 February 2012. -

Dynamization Of Gender Roles in Wartime: An East European Perspective on World War II and its Aftermath
While numerous studies have explored the effects of the occupying regimes on the respective societies, the impact of World War II on Gender relations has generally been treated as a rather marginal issue. In recent years, however, some important studies have been published shining light on various aspects of gender relations in times of war in Twentieth-Century Eastern Europe, and focusing on women as perpetrators, e.g. as “Agents of Germanization” (Harvey 2003), or as victims of sexual violence .The conference intends not only to piece the existing puzzle together, but to explore the interplay of World War II and gender roles in East Europe in a broad context. -

La journée d’études « Les banquiers centraux dans la construction européenne » se propose d’étudier les banquiers centraux et les banques centrales telles qu’ils s’insèrent dans et exercent une influence sur les institutions européennes. Tout au long du XXe siècle, les Européens ont voulu retrouver la stabilité monétaire mythique du XIXe siècle. De cette recherche, les banquiers centraux ont tiré un statut et un rôle nouveaux, plus important, alors que l’Europe, finissant par s’organiser, a mis très progressivement en marche une union monétaire. Il est aujourd’hui utile de s’interroger sur ces banquiers centraux et sur leur rôle dans l’intégration européenne. Quelle est leur influence sur la mise en place de l’Euro ? -

Sie führen jeweils Vertreter aus der polnischen, ost- und westeuropäischen bzw. internationalen Geschichtswissenschaft zu einer kontroversen Debatte zusammen, an der sich auch das Publikum aktiv beteiligt. / Les débats Joachim-Lelewel, organisés par l’Institut historique allemand de Varsovie, s’intéressent aux questions actuelles et controversées de l’histoire polonaise dans leur contexte européen. Ils rassemblent, autour d’une table-ronde sur des sujets controversés à laquelle le public est invité à participer, à la fois des historiens spécialisés en histoire de la Pologne, de l’Europe de l’est et de l’ouest. -
