Transnational Biographies. Destinies at the Crossroads throughout the 20th Century
This call for papers seeks methodological and case-study perspectives on 20th century biographies, interpreted within a framework of cross-national/transnational connections, surpassing the nation-centered apprehension of history. The contributions should acknowledge and interpret destinies and existences as subjected to transnational spaces and structures, while considering actors as non-state (or multi-state) entities. Moreover, we seek contributions that surpass the “center-periphery” paradigm, focusing on a “horizontal” approach, while also reversing the spotlight from diplomatic and political history towards the social and cultural dimension of it. Editors welcome contributions from different fields of research: history, political science, cultural studies, philosophy, sociology, gender studies or any other related areas of interest.

ReThinking Europe in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea Region
The 11th annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies
Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union? Transnational dimensions of dealing with the past in ‘Third Wave’ democracies
Southern Europe, Central Eastern Europe, and the Former Soviet Union in Global Perspective
This conference aims to fill the gap by looking at how post-dictatorial justice and memory experiences in Southern Europe, Central Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union after the “third wave of democratization” have reciprocally affected each other. It also seeks to unpack how memorialization practices in these regions were shaped by and influenced in turn criminalization discourses in other geographical contexts (Latin America, Asia, Africa). The conference focuses on transnational activism, transfers of knowledge, and expertise at bilateral, regional or international levels, the impact of legal and mnemonic narratives outside their countries of origin, and the role of international organizations and NGO's in dealing with mass violence. The conference aims thus to trace the mutlidirectional circulation of ideas, norms and models of reckoning with authoritarian regimes both within these regions, and between them and other areas of the world.

Cartographies de l'Europe du Sud-Est
The Association international d’études du sud-est européen is happy to invite you to the 12th Congress of South-East European Studies, taking place in Bucharest, from the 2nd to the 7th of September 2019. One of the conference panels, organized by Robert Born (Leipzig) and Marian Coman (Bucharest), is dedicated to the cartographic history of south-eastern Europe. Proposals for individual papers are welcome on various aspects of the history of south-eastern Europe cartography, from the Ottoman period to the post-communist era. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: Renaissance and Early Modern maps of the Ottoman Empire, Enlightenment cartographies of Eastern Europe, the birth of national cartography, war and peace cartographies, historical and propaganda maps, national and local surveys, Cold War cartographies.

Nous invitons les chercheurs actifs dans de divers champs des disciplines socio-humaines (histoire et historiographie, (psycho)sociologie des phénomènes identitaires, études littéraires, anthropologie culturelle, anthropologie de la mémoire, Cultural Memory Studies, histoire des idées et des mentalités, études politiques, pédagogie, journalisme, communication interculturelle etc.), à exprimer leurs points de vue – dans une perspective inter- et transdisciplinaire – sur des thèmes tels que : Goulag /vs/ Shoah : mémoire(s), histoire(s), oubli(s) ; mémoire du communisme en Europe : Occident /vs/ Orient ; « lieux de mémoire » en Europe contemporaine ; « guerres de mémoires » et narrations identitaires en Europe contemporaine ; « post-mémoire » des totalitarismes en Europe contemporaine : horizons d’attente /vs/méta-narrations légitimatrices ; la « hantise du passé » dans les productions littéraires, artistiques et cinématographiques en Europe post-totalitaire.

Les modalités de mise en œuvre de l’engagement de la France dans l’Europe médiane de l’entre-deux-guerres (1917-1939)
L'objectif de ce colloque est d'éclairer les initiatives pratiques conjointes entre la France et l'ensemble des pays alliés de l'Europe médiane au cours de l’entre-deux-guerres pour construire de façon concrète l'alliance entre les partenaires. On insistera sur la collaboration de la France avec les puissances membres de la Petite Entente (Tchécoslovaquie, Roumanie, Royaume des Serbes, Croates et Slovènes) – et de ces puissances entre elles –, mais les communications sur les liens avec les autres puissances alliées ou partenaires de la région (Pologne, États baltes et Finlande, Grèce, Turquie), voire avec les puissances révisionnistes (Russie soviétique, Hongrie, Bulgarie) sont évidemment les bienvenues.

Administrative accountability in the later Middle Ages
Records, procedures, and their societal impact
The emergence of new types of financial records, the creation of institutional procedures, and the birth of a bureaucratic corps in a society in which accountability had been largely social and moral represent key developments in the history of the later Middle Ages. The colloquium will explore the multifaceted reality of administrative accountability in Western Europe, c. 1200-1450. Because the renewed interest in the subject makes methodological exchanges all the more timely, the colloquium will provide a venue for testing new approaches to the sources. Special attention will be given to underexplored archival documents, such as the castellany accounts (computi) of late-medieval Savoy, and to topics that have hitherto received less attention, such as the social impact of institutional consolidation. Comparisons with better-known texts, such as the English pipe rolls, are also encouraged.

The Other Half of Communism: Women's Outlook
“History of Communism in Europe” Journal, no. 8/ 2017
This issue looks to include the most recent scholarship on women and their intricate relations with the communist parties in Europe, during the XXth century. While including the valuable scholarship on “exceptional” personalities such as Alexandra Kollontai, Inessa Armand or Dolores Ibarruri, this issue aims to explore the voices of women that by political choice or simply historical tournaments found themselves as both objects and subjects of the communist parties. The political evolution of Europe through the century, the existence of USSR and the national (illegal) branches affiliated to the Communist International, and later of an Eastern Bloc determined completely different experiences, forms of activism and sociability. This issue of History of Communism in Europe aims to follow the relation between communism and women before and after the Second World War, on the both sides of the Iron Curtain.

The (R)evolutionary Maze. Communist Parties in Europe

Communism played a very important role on the 20th century European political and cultural stage, both as ideology and as an authoritarian/totalitarian state system. Communist parties all over Europe were called to lead the way in the fight for a revolutionary, equalitarian, utopic society, under the guidance of the III Communist International (founded in Moscow in 1919) and the Communist Party in the Soviet Union. Although the Communist Parties in Europe were established and developed on a similar pattern until the breakout of World War II, during the Cold War important dissimilarities could be observed between Western and Eastern Europe. This issue of History of Communism in Europe aims to follow the development of Communist Parties on the both sides of the Iron Curtain and their impact, considering that they were interconnected both ideologically and institutionally, but also separated by the extremely different contexts in which they had to (re)act.

New Europe College - Institute for Advanced Study
Following the European Research Council competition for Consolidator Grants (2014), New Europe College became the Host Institution of such a grant. The project title is Luxury, Fashion and Social statuS in Early Modern South-Eastern Europe and its Principal Investigator is Constanţa Vintilă-Ghiţulescu, researcher at New Europe College and at the “Nicolae Iorga” Institute of History in Bucharest. The project aims to trace the role luxury played in the modernisation process in South-Eastern Europe, taking into account the specific features of the region and how South-Eastern European peoples, and their Byzantine and Ottoman heritage are viewed through the stereotype of “Balkanism”. The project’s findings will help towards a better knowledge of changes in European society in its transition to modernity, and of similarities and differences between the various regions of Europe.

Partis, élections et mouvements sociaux
Repenser les contours de la contestation politique en Europe centrale et orientale
Les élections et les mouvements sociaux sont les deux formes majeures de conflit politique dans les systèmes démocratiques (D. McAdam & S. Tarrow). Cependant, la nature des relations entre les mouvements sociaux et les élections est encore insuffisamment étudiée, particulièrement lorsqu’il s’agit de la région de l’Europe Centrale et Orientale et de la Turquie. Des études commencent à être développées dans une perspective comparative plus systématique sur l’Europe de l’Ouest (H. Kriesi) et les Etats-Unis (T. Skocpol). Cependant les pays de l’ECO ont été traités soit d’une manière isolée (bien que compréhensive, c’est le cas de la Turquie), soit ils ont bénéficié d’analyses circonscrites aux épisodes déjà fort théorisés (révolutions orange, Solidarnosc, etc.) mais qui ne rendent plus justice à la complexité des nouveaux mouvements sociaux et de leurs circonstances politiques.

Les défis de la liberté d’expression : entre censure et abus
Le colloque propose une approche interdisciplinaire concernant la liberté d’expression sous le gouvernement démocratique, en tant que principe et action publique également. On cherche ainsi comment s’articule le concept de la liberté à travers les conflits politiques et les débats juridiques, mais aussi les arguments en faveur d’une réglementation du champ de l’expression, qui impliquent l’État, la conscience, l'altérité culturelle ou même le bon sens, pour saisir ce que recouvre la censure et ce qui pousse l'individu à l'autocensure. Les interventions visent des thèmes comme l'irrévérence et l'offense en République, le droit de ne pas être neutre, le constitutionnalisme transnational et les droits fondamentaux, l'abus de la liberté d'expression, la censure et le potentiel subversif des mots.

Les deltas dans l’Antiquité gréco-romaine
Réunis en septembre 2015 dans le Delta du Danube, à l’Institut des recherches éco-muséales de Tulcea, des enseignants-chercheurs, des doctorants et des post-doctorants français, allemands et roumains discuterons les progrès récents des études sur les deltas de la mer Noire, de l’Asie Mineure, du Proche-Orient et de l’Égypte, de l’Italie, de la France, de l’Espagne et de l’Afrique du Nord, et échangeront sur les méthodologies à employer, sur les concepts à développer, sur l’impact de leurs travaux dans les politiques environnementales et culturelles actuelles.

Formes de l’opposition culturelle et représentations identitaires dans l’Europe des totalitarismes
Ouvert aux approches inter-, pluri- et transdisciplinaires et coextensif, du point de vue thématique et méthodologique, aux recherches antérieures de l’équipe organisatrice, ce colloque se donne pour but fondamental le renforcement des coopérations scientifiques des universitaires de Galati avec des unités de recherche de l’entier espace européen, tout comme le rassemblement des spécialistes en divers domaines des disciplines socio-humaines (études littéraires, culturelles, politiques et identitaires, histoire, (psycho) sociologie, pédagogie etc.), auxquels l’on donne l’occasion d’analyser, dans une perspective comparatiste, un corpus varié de textes / documents – littéraires, mémoriels, (auto)biographiques (y compris ceux publiés en samizdat), historiographiques, des documents existants dans les archives des anciennes polices politiques, des textes publiés dans la presse culturelle et politique pendant la période 1944-1989, des manuels et des programmes scolaires, des documents audio / vidéo illustratifs pour la thématique abordée etc.

Identité et mémoire culturelles en Europe aux XXe et XXIe siècles
Dans une Europe engagée en plein processus de (re)construction sur le plan culturel-identitaire, la problématique de la mémoire – ce « caléidoscope fantasmagorique » qui ne cesse d’« hanter » les discours intellectuels contemporains, en touchant à tous les domaines de la recherche socio-humaine – occupe une position centrale. Comme le montrait Régine Robin, « la « mémoire » est à la mode, au devant de la scène. Mémoire collective, devoir de la mémoire, travail de la mémoire, abus de la mémoire etc. À la limite, on ne parle plus que de cela, on n’écrit que sur ce sujet. […] Ces discours sur la mémoire forment une immense cacophonie de bruit et de fureur, un concert assourdissant de thèmes, un ensemble d’images, de polémiques et de controverses, des argumentations symétriques ou congruentes, à propos desquelles, nul ne reste indifférent. »
