Anchoring International Organizations in the Study of Organizational Sociology
This paper session aims to bring together scholars who adopt a sociological perspective to the study of international organizations (IOs). IOs have historically been studied by jurists and later by political scientists through the prism of theories in international relations (IR). In the past two decade, growing scholarship in IR has shifted the focus to analyzing IOs as actors in IR in their own right. To this end, scholars have not only developed new methodologies, traditionally used by anthropologists and organizational sociologists, but have also embraced sociology as a discipline and more precisely the field of organizational sociology. In this way, IOs have been studied as bureaucracies, as organizations within which various actors compete, which comply and produce norms and values. Nowadays, organizational sociology provides a fascinating basis to study IOs not only from within, but also with respect to their environment in a dynamic perspective.

Social justice in times of uncertainty
The 2021 Congress of the Swiss Sociological Association (SSA)
Social Justice in Times of Uncertainty takes as a starting point the health pandemic that erupted in 2020, which led societies across the world to cope with disruptions in the provisioning of goods and services, means of livelihood, and fundamental freedom – not least, that of movement. The crisis also revealed global and local inequalities, translated into who has the right to live or not, and raised new questions around (in)justice in the contemporary world. In light of the turmoil experienced, as a globalized society and within our communities, this congress emphasizes the relevance of social and environmental justice in the making of a fair society, asking the question: in times of uncertainty, what does it mean to live a good life in a just society?

The Role of Art In and Towards Sustainable Changes
The Research Committee of Sociology of Arts and Culture (CR-SAC) of the Swiss Sociological Association and the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne as well as Lucerne would like to welcome all participants to the conference “Sustainability through Art”. The main purpose of the event is to render visible what is being done in the field of “arts and sustainability”, engage in debates and discussions between different actors working in the field, and explore future research and research-action directions.

This Concepta workshop is to explore concepts related to dedication. It is not only a matter of distinguishing the terms which refer to the idea of dedication, but of tracking their respective evolutions, both in terms of content and of semantic exchanges or mutations. The aim of the workshop is to clarify the situation, and above all, to define the special place occupied by the concept of solidarity among all the concepts referring to help to others. This workshop should not only offer a more solid conceptual basis for work in this field, but also shed a new light on relevant practices and ambitions surrounding values often considered as universal and absolute – especially nowadays.

The role of art in and towards sustainable changes
While the sociology of arts and culture has long dealt with classical sociological questions of artistic production, distribution and reception, the concern for ecological issues and sustainability has only recently been taken up. On the one hand, the artistic field is an economy and an industry like any other, where the use of natural and human resources leads to questions of inequality, access and power relations. On the other hand, it represents a particular case, as intertwined with the issues of sustainability are those of artistic meaning, reception and cultural practices, and social factors different than in other fields. What is the environmental and social impact of art? Can art be sustainable, both ecologically and socially through time, and how? What can we make of the sustainability of art that is made to last long – sculpture, painting, print, recorded production – as well as of the required preservations techniques and places? And, on the other hand, what is the place of ephemeral art when considering sustainability (in all its aspects): street art, graffiti, art installations, live music and theatre? How can art support transformations towards more sustainable societies? A change in individual and collective practices is needed to achieve the SDGs. What role can or do art and artists play in these transformations? Can artists contribute to shaping alternative paths?

Dans la lignée des travaux de Goubert (Du Luxe au confort, 1988), de Crowley (The Invention of Comfort, 2001) et de DeJean (The Age of Comfort, 2009), ce colloque souhaite revenir sur la part que tenait le plaisir sensoriel dans l’organisation des espaces intérieurs en Europe entre 1700 et 1850.

Between social justice and education: rethinking legal clinics in the light of critical approaches
5th international conference of the Francophone legal clinics networks
Après une réflexion menée sur les relations entre la cité et l’université et sur l’accès au droit, le Ve colloque des cliniques juridiques francophones vise à analyser les cliniques juridiques à l’aune des approches critiques à travers trois axes de réflexion. Le premier est dédié aux liens entre pédagogies critiques et enseignement clinique du droit, avec l’apport de la Dre Irène Pereira, pédagogue critique et autrice du livre Paolo Freire : pédagogue des opprimé-e-s. Le second axe de réflexion aura pour objet les collaborations Nord-Sud entre cliniques juridiques et clinicien-nes et sera introduit par le Prof. Daniel Bonilla (universidad de los Andes), auteur de diverses publications sur les cliniques juridiques dans le Sud global et les collaborations Nord-Sud. Le troisième axe vise à s’interroger sur les bénéficiaires des cliniques juridiques et sera alimenté par une présentation de la Dre Djemila Carron, co-fondatrice de la Law Clinic de l’université de Genève et de la Applied Human Rights Clinic au camp de réfugié-es de Kakuma.

The Centre of Social Research (CERES) - "Lunchtime research program" (2019-2020)
Ce cycle de conférences se propose d’analyser les caractéristiques polymorphes de l’espace urbain, tout en prenant en compte l’habiter et l’habitabilité des territoires qui le composent. Trois axes font œuvre de fil conducteur à ces pérégrinations : « Les clés de la ville » invite à réfléchir aux métamorphoses et permanences des espaces en observant notamment leurs fonctions d’agrégation ou de ségrégation, les divers seuils, limites, invitations rencontrés en les traversant. « L’intervention sociale située » s’intéresse aux actions des professionnel-les du travail social, aux logiques d’emplacement et de déplacement des dispositifs d’accueil, au débordement de leurs démarcations architecturales ainsi qu’à leurs effets habilitants ou non. « Les publics relégués de l’espace d’intervention sociale » considère les « publics cibles » des politiques sociales, interrogeant leur visibilité, leur mobilité, les frontières visibles ou invisibles derrière lesquelles ils restent parfois interdits.

The logics of the inventory: classifying archives, objects and books (the Middle Ages-19th century)
Ce colloque qui se tiendra à l'université de Genève, s’intéressera de façon non restrictive aux pratiques et aux gestes de mises en ordre qui donnent lieu à un document, que celui-ci soit un inventaire, un répertoire, un catalogue, un index (indice), etc. Les inventaires sont établis et utilisés dans des contextes particuliers. Ils proposent une mise en forme, une structuration, un classement d’archives, de livres ou d’objets, qui ne sont pas toujours explicites, mais qui méritent d’être considérés comme des pratiques innovantes et créatives.

This panel addresses the old question of power relationships in knowledge production in a time of increased academic competition, which leads to a greater uniformity of anthropological thinking. It thus aims to be a forum to exchange on the possibilities to develop different ethnographies from “global margins” – such as indigenous methodologies, subaltern voices, feminist epistemologies as well as precarious non-tenured scholars – and in a way that would matter for anthropology in a whole.

Le festival « Histoire et cité » s’intéresse cette année aux « Histoires d’eaux », du 27 au 31 mars. conférences, débats, projections de films, présentations de livres, expositions et performances au programme de cette quatrième édition. Faisant la part belle aux réalités locales, sa programmation s’organise autour de cinq axes : H2O (enjeux environnementaux et composition hydrique) ; la gouvernance de l’eau (usages juridiques, sociaux, économiques et politiques) ; les peuples de l’eau (communautés humaines à vocation aquatique) ; l’imaginaire de l’eau (les représentations, les mythes et les symboles) ; eaux de vie, eaux de mort (hygiène, santé, risques et fléaux).

Migrations, intercultural relations and power relations - calls for contributions
17th international conference of the Association internationale pour la recherche interculturelle (ARIC)
Ce congrès propose une articulation fine entre les débats scientifiques sur les migrations, l’interculturel et le vivre ensemble d’une part et les pratiques professionnelles d’accueil et de l’intégration, de l’autre. Dans le contexte d’une dramatisation sociopolitique des phénomènes de mobilité, les migrations sont présentées comme autant de déclencheurs de crises sociétales, engendrant une exacerbation des tensions entre les insiders (les « établi∙e∙s ») et les outsiders (les groupes et individus nouvellement arrivés). Pourtant, les réalités sont souvent beaucoup plus nuancées que cette dramatisation ne le laisse entrevoir. Au-delà de de la question des inégalités sociales et de la répartition de ressources, les discours et les pratiques envers les populations issues de la migration contribuent à mettre en place des formes de pouvoir qui créent un climat favorable aux interactions entre populations et participent de la construction d’un espace commun parfois visibles dans différents univers d’expressions artistiques partagés ou, au contraire, entravent les interactions, la cohabitation, l’intégration mutuelle.

Il mène également de front une réflexion non seulement sur les recherches mais également sur les articulations de celles-ci avec l’intervention sociale et la sphère politique.

Panel 3.18 – Between old and new "others": intercultural policies in tension
Les politiques de reconnaissance de la « diversité culturelle » se déclinent de manière différente dans les contextes nationaux marqués par la présence de peuples autochtones et par celle de personnes migrantes. Cependant, que cela soit en Amérique latine, en Amérique du nord, en Océanie ou encore dans les territoires français d’outre-mer, par exemple, ces deux groupes sont désignés comme des « autres » dont l’intégration constitue un enjeu central pour la cohésion nationale tant culturelle que territoriale. Dans les deux cas, les représentations reproduisent des rapports de type colonial. Ce panel vise à décloisonner ces deux champs de recherche et d’action sociale que sont l’autochtonie et la migration en créant un espace de dialogue permettant de dépasser certaines limites intrinsèques à ces deux champs en termes d’essentialisation et de réification.

Social work and racism: what paradoxes?
Proposé lors du colloque 2019 de l'Association internationale pour la recherche interculturelle (ARIC) Migrations, relations interculturelles et rapports de pouvoir, ce panel porte sur le racisme comme forme de discrimination liée à la racialisation, comprise comme un processus social d’altérisation et de hiérarchisation basé sur des lectures des corps ou de certaines de leurs parties (couleur de peau, couleur et texture des cheveux…). En interrogeant le pratiques de l'intervention sociale, il vise à questionne les formes structurelles de racisme, inscrites dans le fonctionnement même des sociétés occidentales et produites par et dans les institutions.

The project “Gangs, Gangsters, and Ganglands: Towards a Global Comparative Ethnography” (GANGS) aims to develop a systematic comparative investigation of global gang dynamics, to better understand why they emerge, how they evolve over time, whether they are associated with particular urban configurations, how and why individuals join gangs, and what impact this has on their potential futures. It draws on ethnographic research carried out in Nicaragua, South Africa, and France, adopting an explicitly tripartite focus on “Gangs”, “Gangsters”, and “Ganglands” in order to better explore the interplay between group, individual, and contextual factors. The first will consider the organisational dynamics of gangs, the second will focus on individual gang members and their trajectories before, during, and after their involvement in a gang, while the third will reflect on the contexts within which gangs emerge and evolve.
