Gendering Humanitarian Knowledge
Global Histories of Compassion from the Mid-Nineteenth Century to the Present
The conference invites scholars to think about the notion of "humanitarian knowledge" in a multidisciplinary way, by combining perspectives such as gender history, the histories ofemotions and the body, literary and visual culture studies, global health history, as well as the history of institutions and their agents. All of them are useful to explore the transnational networks through which humanitarian practices and ideas have been promoted, disseminated and standardised.The conference brings together scholars interested in working on the history of humanitarian knowledge from a gender perspective. The interventions deal with stories of flesh and blood, which put women’s and men’s humanitarian experiences at their centre, in order to inscribe their local practices within a global history of compassion from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

Festival « Histoire et cité »
Pour sa troisième édition, Histoire et cité a choisi d’explorer le thème « Être libre ». Des luttes de libérations nationales à la révolte des esclaves, la liberté est un combat. Elle a notamment mobilisé les femmes pour conquérir leurs droits civiques et continue de les inspirer pour échapper aux carcans du patriarcat. Par ailleurs, notre programme réserve une place particulière aux mouvements de 1968, cinquante ans après. De Spartacus à Martin Luther King, du reggae à l’indépendance de la presse, de l’exode biblique aux séries TV, goûtez à la liberté !

Madame Guyon (1648-1717). A mystic and politician at the court of Versailles
À l’occasion de la célébration du tricentenaire de la mort de Madame Guyon (1648-1717), l’université de Genève organise un colloque international réunissant des historiens, théologiens, littéraires et philosophes, afin de poser à nouveaux frais la question de l’œuvre mystique de cette figure parfois déroutante du Grand Siècle et de débattre sur les implications sociales, éthiques et politiques de sa pensée et de son action à la Cour de Versailles.

Feminist, black and decolonial polysemy in movement
Cet événement rassemble des travaux critiques qui portent sur la « race », le féminisme, le (post)colonialisme et le courant décolonial pour interroger le mouvement. Nous voulons explorer cette notion de manière polysémique : elle renvoie aux mouvements sociaux, à la mobilité dans l’espace et le temps de sujets individuels et collectifs, mais aussi aux politiques de l’émotion. A partir du trio – mouvoir, se mouvoir, émouvoir – , nous voulons appréhender la complexité de la formation des sujets politiques, des techniques et des grammaires de résistances, ou encore de stratégies d’émancipation et de coalition. La mise en dialogue de chercheur.e.s issu.e.s de diverses disciplines (histoire, science politique, géographie, études de genre) vise également à offrir une perspective plurielle autour des rapports de pouvoir racialisés et genrés, susceptibles de stabiliser certaines économies affectives, de contraindre le mouvement et de produire mobilité ou immobilité.

Le cycle de conférences en études genre, organisé par l'Institut des études genre de l'université de Genève, ont l’ambition d’attirer l’attention d’un large public sur l’intérêt de l’approche de genre pour traiter différentes questions, qui sont autant des sujets de recherche que des problèmes de société. Elles font appel à des spécialistes reconnu·e·s qui travaillent dans une perspective internationale.

Women in Educated Elites of Pre-Socialist and Early Socialist East Central European Societies
The opening up to modernity of East Central Europe since the late 19th century was marked – among other things – by a triple process generating structural transformations of established post-feudal societies and affecting often radically the status of women. Due to post-feudal conditions of competition for social standing, positions of influence and prestige, hitherto unknown forms of inequalities appeared in the very process of accumulation of political, economic, professional, cultural an educational assets henceforth necessary for the access to the elites. Female professionals, though they could rarely achieve advanced careers in the ruling elites in the old regime, so much so that they often encountered even various forms of public rejection and discrimination on intellectual markets, significantly participated in the framing of the way of life of the new middle class. This workshop will adopt a gender-focused perspective cocentrating on the place of women (training, education, professions) and bringing to light the differences and inequalities existing between male and female members of educated elites.

The two and a half day workshop will take place at the European Institute of Geneva University in October 2012. The exact dates will be announced in early July 2012. The official language of the workshop will be English. Internationalization in Education, 18th-20th Centuries
L’historiographie contemporaine porte un intérêt renouvelé aux phénomènes de transferts, circulations, diffusions, flux et échanges entre différents espaces. Pour tenter de les décrire, diverses notions comme internationalisation, mondialisation, globalisation sont convoquées. Tout en historicisant et en problématisant de telles conceptions, cette conférence propose d’interroger la manière dont ces processus opèrent dans le monde de l’éducation. -
