Between social justice and education: rethinking legal clinics in the light of critical approaches

5th international conference of the Francophone legal clinics networks

Après une réflexion menée sur les relations entre la cité et l’université et sur l’accès au droit, le V^e colloque des cliniques juridiques francophones vise à analyser les cliniques juridiques à l’aune des approches critiques à travers trois axes de réflexion. Le premier est dédié aux liens entre pédagogies critiques et enseignement clinique du droit, avec l’apport de la Dre Irène Pereira, pédagogue critique et autrice du livre Paolo Freire : pédagogue des opprimé-e-s. Le second axe de réflexion aura pour objet les collaborations Nord-Sud entre cliniques juridiques et clinicien-nes et sera introduit par le Prof. Daniel Bonilla (universidad de los Andes), auteur de diverses publications sur les cliniques juridiques dans le Sud global et les collaborations Nord-Sud. Le troisième axe vise à s’interroger sur les bénéficiaires des cliniques juridiques et sera alimenté par une présentation de la Dre Djemila Carron, co-fondatrice de la Law Clinic de l’université de Genève et de la Applied Human Rights Clinic au camp de réfugié-es de Kakuma.

PhD positions for the research project Gangs, Gangsters, and Ganglands: Towards a Global Comparative Ethnography” (GANGS)

The project “Gangs, Gangsters, and Ganglands: Towards a Global Comparative Ethnography” (GANGS) aims to develop a systematic comparative investigation of global gang dynamics, to better understand why they emerge, how they evolve over time, whether they are associated with particular urban configurations, how and why individuals join gangs, and what impact this has on their potential futures. It draws on ethnographic research carried out in Nicaragua, South Africa, and France, adopting an explicitly tripartite focus on “Gangs”, “Gangsters”, and “Ganglands” in order to better explore the interplay between group, individual, and contextual factors. The first will consider the organisational dynamics of gangs, the second will focus on individual gang members and their trajectories before, during, and after their involvement in a gang, while the third will reflect on the contexts within which gangs emerge and evolve.

The conference will investigate all sorts of practices related to any document that can non-restrictivly be regarded as an inventory, catalog, index, etc. Inventories are indeed established and used in particular contexts. Each proposes its own particular classification and order, though not always explicitly, so that any ordering and structuring of archives, books or objects deserves to be considered as an innovative and creative action.

Police and justice: the Gordian knot. The Enlightenment to the Liberal State (1750-1850)

Depuis le XVII^e siècle, en pratique comme en théorie, police et justice constituent deux modalités spécifiques de la pacification sociale, deux manières d’exercer la puissance souveraine, deux modes de gouvernement. Bien que conceptuellement distinctes (elles relèvent « d’un ordre différent » selon Montesquieu), les activités de police et de justice sont pendant longtemps soumises à la confusion des compétences, à des limites de juridictions floues, confiées à des institutions et à des acteurs qui officient indifféremment dans l’un ou l’autre des deux domaines. Dès 1789, la séparation institutionnelle entre police et justice est une exigence constitutionnelle qui participe à l’édification de l’État de droit issu de la Déclaration des droits de l’homme et du citoyen. En 1808, le Code d’instruction criminelle entérine la séparation des fonctions policières et judiciaires dans la chaîne du pénal et en fixe durablement les contours, en France comme dans une grande partie de l’Europe continentale. Jusqu’à aujourd’hui pourtant, les tensions qui caractérisent les relations entre police et justice, entre juges et policiers, n’ont jamais cessé et soulèvent des questions d’une actualité toujours renouvelée, parfois brûlante.

Si depuis un vingtaine d'années, l'histoire du droit de punir fournit l'un des chantiers les plus féconds de l'historiographie, les normes et les pratiques de la coopération judiciaire entre les Etats souverains demeurent largement méconnues. De la construction de l'Etat moderne jusqu'aux processus contemporains d'intégration, la journée d'études du 21 février 2014 est donc ouverte à toutes les recherches historiques sur la coopération judiciaire et les champs d'intervention qui la rendent possible (diplomatie, justice, police).

Assistant HES (Doctoral student) at Geneva School of Business Administration

The Geneva School of Business Administration (HEG-Geneva) offers a Research Assistant (Doctoral student) position for three years starting from 1^st September 2013.The doctoral student will participate to the project « Organizing, Communicating, and Costing in Risk Governance: Learning Lessons from the H1N1 Pandemic », financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation. He or she will be in charge of the research components dedicated to costing around H1N1. This comparative study will involve qualitative fieldwork in three countries, namely Switzerland, the United States and Japan. He or she will collaborate with a post-doctoral fellow focusing on issues related to organization and communication. He or she will have to write a PhD thesis on H1N1 costing issues and will be supervised by Prof. Nathalie Brender. The project is funded for three years.

Mathilde Bourrier): « Organizing, Communicating, and Costing in Risk Governance: Learning Lessons from the H1N1 Pandemic ». Il/Elle travaillera plus particulièrement sur les deux composantes du projet portant sur les facteurs organisationnels et communicationnels de la gestion de la pandémie, en Suisse, aux États-Unis et au Japon. La personne recherchée a obtenu son doctorat en sociologie ou en anthropologie depuis moins de 3 ans, d'excellentes capacités à mener des terrains de recherche dans plusieurs pays, et d'un intérêt marqué pour les questions de santé globale (global health).

Contemporary Religious Movements: From Africa to the Americas and Back

The transatlantic movement of beliefs and of religious practices dates back to the earliest days of the “discovery” of the Americas. Since then, there have been over five hundred years of exchange between the two sides of the Atlantic. In many cases, religious movements brought to the New World by European and African migrants were among those persecuted by the hegemonic religious institutions as heretic or pagan. Sometimes, the crossing to the New World has brought about transformation of old belief systems, leading to the creation of so- called “syncretistic” movements, such as Haitian Voodoo, Rastafarianism, Candomblé, etc. To these, we might add the Pentecostal wave, which in recent decades has been sweeping across both Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa, transforming the religious landscapes.

La Société suisse des américanistes et l'Université de Genève en partenariat avec le Projet du centenaire de l'Organisation internationale du travail (OIT) organisent à Genève, les 28 et 29 octobre 2011, un colloque international sur la participation de l'Amérique latine aux travaux de la Société des nations et de l'OIT durant l'entre-deux-guerres. Toute proposition originale abordant un aspect des relations entre l’Amérique latine et les organismes internationaux genevois de l’entre-deux-guerres sera considérée, mais les chercheurs intéressés pourront, entre autres, suivre les pistes suivantes: l'intégration des États latino-américains à la diplomatie multilatérale ; le rôle de la SDN dans le règlement des conflits inter-américains ; les modalités des transferts de normes entre les organisations internationales et les espaces nationaux latino-américains...
