Between social justice and education: rethinking legal clinics in the light of critical approaches

5th international conference of the Francophone legal clinics networks

Après une réflexion menée sur les relations entre la cité et l’université et sur l’accès au droit, le V^e colloque des cliniques juridiques francophones vise à analyser les cliniques juridiques à l’aune des approches critiques à travers trois axes de réflexion. Le premier est dédié aux liens entre pédagogies critiques et enseignement clinique du droit, avec l’apport de la Dre Irène Pereira, pédagogue critique et autrice du livre Paolo Freire : pédagogue des opprimé-e-s. Le second axe de réflexion aura pour objet les collaborations Nord-Sud entre cliniques juridiques et clinicien-nes et sera introduit par le Prof. Daniel Bonilla (universidad de los Andes), auteur de diverses publications sur les cliniques juridiques dans le Sud global et les collaborations Nord-Sud. Le troisième axe vise à s’interroger sur les bénéficiaires des cliniques juridiques et sera alimenté par une présentation de la Dre Djemila Carron, co-fondatrice de la Law Clinic de l’université de Genève et de la Applied Human Rights Clinic au camp de réfugié-es de Kakuma.

Gendering Humanitarian Knowledge

Global Histories of Compassion from the Mid-Nineteenth Century to the Present

The conference invites scholars to think about the notion of "humanitarian knowledge" in a multidisciplinary way, by combining perspectives such as gender history, the histories ofemotions and the body, literary and visual culture studies, global health history, as well as the history of institutions and their agents. All of them are useful to explore the transnational networks through which humanitarian practices and ideas have been promoted, disseminated and standardised.The conference brings together scholars interested in working on the history of humanitarian knowledge from a gender perspective. The interventions deal with stories of flesh and blood, which put women’s and men’s humanitarian experiences at their centre, in order to inscribe their local practices within a global history of compassion from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

De la construction de l'Etat moderne jusqu'aux processus contemporains d'intégration, la journée d'études du 21 février 2014 est donc ouverte à toutes les recherches historiques sur la coopération judiciaire et les champs d'intervention qui la rendent possible (diplomatie, justice, police).

Assistant HES (Doctoral student) at Geneva School of Business Administration

The Geneva School of Business Administration (HEG-Geneva) offers a Research Assistant (Doctoral student) position for three years starting from 1^st September 2013.The doctoral student will participate to the project « Organizing, Communicating, and Costing in Risk Governance: Learning Lessons from the H1N1 Pandemic », financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation. He or she will be in charge of the research components dedicated to costing around H1N1. This comparative study will involve qualitative fieldwork in three countries, namely Switzerland, the United States and Japan. He or she will collaborate with a post-doctoral fellow focusing on issues related to organization and communication. He or she will have to write a PhD thesis on H1N1 costing issues and will be supervised by Prof. Nathalie Brender. The project is funded for three years.

Women in Educated Elites of Pre-Socialist and Early Socialist East Central European Societies

The opening up to modernity of East Central Europe since the late 19th century was marked – among other things – by a triple process generating structural transformations of established post-feudal societies and affecting often radically the status of women. Due to post-feudal conditions of competition for social standing, positions of influence and prestige, hitherto unknown forms of inequalities appeared in the very process of accumulation of political, economic, professional, cultural an educational assets henceforth necessary for the access to the elites. Female professionals, though they could rarely achieve advanced careers in the ruling elites in the old regime, so much so that they often encountered even various forms of public rejection and discrimination on intellectual markets, significantly participated in the framing of the way of life of the new middle class. This workshop will adopt a gender-focused perspective cocentrating on the place of women (training, education, professions) and bringing to light the differences and inequalities existing between male and female members of educated elites.

Making up stories?

From narratives of urbanism to fictional narrative: making cities in the "society of the spectacle"

Il y a près de trente ans, parallèlement à l’émergence, dans les sciences sociales, d’un tournant discursif, Bernardo Secchi évoquait, au moyen de ce qu’il appelait alors le “récit d’urbanisme”, le souci des urbanistes pour la production de mythes, faisant d’une activité souvent considérée comme principalement technique, un travail centré sur la fabrique d’images et d’imaginaires. Cette conception de la pratique urbanistique donnera lieu à un puissant courant de recherche dans le monde anglo-saxon. On y tendra d’une part à faire converger récit d’urbanisme et storytelling ; d’autre part, à poser le storytellingcomme un modèle prescriptif ou descriptif de la pratique urbanistique. Or, de même que le storytelling aura dévoyé la communication démocratique dans un souci marqué pour la bonne histoire, le storytelling appliqué au champs de la production urbaine aura conduit à ce que l’on soigne de plus en plus la mise en scène et en spectacle des projets aux dépens de leur réelle mise en débat politique. C’est cette transformation de l’action urbanistique que souhaite appréhender ce colloque.

Historical Development of National Systems of Elite Formation in Eastern and Central Europe

This workshop is bringing together specialists from mostly Eastern Europe together with some West European partners, capable and liable of sharing their localised research expertise in the study of the birth and initial development of national systems of elite training in a number of (mostly but not exclusively) small East Central European societies. All of them have very concrete empirical research agendas and records in these fields, but separately, applied to their own national societies. The idea of the meeting is born from the need of and the interest in comparing – in many thematic issues term by term – research findings, insights and questions gained from studies of the training, career and activities of various East European elite groups during the decades up to the Soviet take-over.

The Restoration of Artworks in Europe from 1789 to 1815 : Practices, Transfers and Stakes

L’histoire de la restauration des œuvres d’art émerge actuellement comme un champ de recherche incontournable et innovant. Cette journée d’étude cherche à faire le point sur l’histoire de la restauration en Europe dans un arc chronologique précis, étendu de 1789 à 1815. La période est en effet charnière. Après la Révolution française et jusqu’à la fin de l’Empire, la circulation accrue des œuvres en Europe favorise le développement de nouvelles techniques de conservation. De même, les annexions d’œuvres d’art par le gouvernement français font émerger la question de leur conservation de manière centrale et extrêmement sensible. D’envergure véritablement internationale et interdisciplinaire, cette journée entend réunir des chercheurs issus de différentes sciences humaines et sociales, mais aussi des professionnels de la restauration.
