Five research assistant positions for the project "Decoding Antisemitsm"
For a 3-year research project on anti-semitic hate speech and hate images on the internet, research assistants are wanted. A qualitative linguistic content analysis of social media comments and analysis of image material and text-image relationships related to antisemitic content is planned. In addition, quantitative linguistic methods will also be applied to the social media corpus. For the country teams we are seeking two doctoral students for the English language area, two for the French language area and one for the German language area.

Scholarships in Berlin - Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives
The Study Foundation of the House of Representatives is a grant programme for young researchers from the United States of America, Great Britain, France, and the successor states of the Soviet Union, who want either to work on Berlin along with German as well as German-international issues or to use research facilities in Berlin. The Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives shall contribute to the further development of a generation of young scholars from the aforementioned states whose research issues deal with Berlin or Germany. Moreover, the young researchers shall use their stay in Berlin in order to make themselves familiar with the political and social system in Berlin and Germany, and build lasting relationships between themselves and with the Berlin House of Representatives. Thus, the Foundation seeks to awaken or strengthen long-term interest in and understanding of Germany in the aforementioned states.

Figures and Perspectives on the Mass and the Individual in Capitalist Modernity (19th-21st century)
How is it possible to use the notion of mass without making it collapse into a complete condemnation of collective action or into an acritical celebration of the crowd? From there on, the relationship between mass and individual can be addressed in many fashions: Are there any specific ways for the mass to organize itself as a political subject? What are means whereby artworks represent and transform the linkage between mass and individual? What are the mutations undergone by the mass qua object of the social sciences? How does capitalist modernity affect the moral and psychic autonomy of individuals?

Prisons of Russia, Ukraine, France, Germany : Questioning Prison Violence
Almost twenty years after the European Court of Human Rights affirmed the right to decent conditions of detention, has this aspiration for a violence-free sentence succeeded in counteracting operation modes usually described as inherent to prison? Has the European project for common minimum standards succeeded in overcoming national penological conceptions and professional cultures, in other words overcoming the historical inertia of prison? What resistance/adaptation strategies have deployed prison administrations in response to these reform injunctions? In view of these experiences, what are the ways out of prison violence? Can civil society actors force these transformations? In particular, can lawyers help maintaining vigilance? The Seminar is held as part of the European Lawyers' Day and will bring together former detainees, researchers, civil society leaders and lawyers to discuss the issue of prison violence as is manifest in Western (Germany, France) and Eastern former soviet (Russia, Ukraine) European prison systems.

En France comme en Allemagne, la réception de la pensée d’Adorno semble actuellement renouvelée. La notion de non-identité, dont les significations sont encore loin d’être épuisées, sont plus particulièrement au centre de l’intérêt pour la pensée du théoricien critique. Elle est de plus en plus invoquée à la faveur de la montée en puissance des « identitaires » en Europe et plus généralement de l’inflation sémantique du vocabulaire de l’identité au sein d’un spectre politique très large. À partir de ce constat d'ordre politique, le Junges Forum propose d’interroger les ressources de la notion de non-identité tout comme ses possibles mobilisations sur des terrains multiples et interdisciplinaires.

Marx, Semiotics and Political Praxis
This special issue of Open Cultural Studies will return to the work of Karl Marx to reflect on and engage with his coherent articulation of words and their use, of words and actions, and of the intellectual and the political. The coherence of his discourse and praxis offers tools to think through, if not seek to transform, the alienated semiotic landscape of our times as described by the Frankfurt school philosopheers, Jean Baudrillard, Frederic Jameson, Sloterdijk and Slavoj Žižek. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth, in this special issue we want to honour his 11th Thesis on Feuerbach: "philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it."

Call for papers - Urban studies
Geomedia is an emerging concept that has been deployed to capture a particular technological condition, associated with recent rapid developments in digital technology. As such, it signals to the dialectics of locative media and the mediations of localities. However, the concept of geomedia carries deeper/wider ontological and epistemological registers that transcend the simple twining of geography and media. In this wider sense, geomedia gestures to the expanding interdisciplinary terrain at the crossroads of media studies and geography, where various ontologies and epistemologies of space/time, flows/mobilities and mediation/ mediatization come together. The aim of this special issue is to explore the urban as a key terrain where these ontologies and epistemologies are articulated.

Le forum de recherche vise à favoriser l'échange interdisciplinaire et la collaboration entre des chercheurs français et allemands. Des chercheurs œuvrant dans différents domaines incluant l'histoire, la sociologie, l'économie, la science politique, le droit, la philosophie, les mathématiques, les statistiques, l'anthropologie et la littérature sont invités à analyser et à évaluer conjointement différents aspects des changements culturels, écologiques, économiques et sociaux. Il considérera divers sujets et questions tels que : Quels sont les changements fondamentaux qui affectent nos sociétés aujourd’hui ? Comment pouvons-nous décrire, mesurer et comparer de manière adéquate les changements sociaux, économiques et environnementaux ?

Images of the courtier in Northern European art, 1500-1700
This panel will address the image of the courtier in the art and architecture of northern European court societies – Germanic countries, Flanders, United Provinces, France and England. While the subject has been widely studied in Italian art history, notably around the key figure of Baldassare Castiglione, it has been less investigated in the study of Northern European art of the Early modern period. The figure of the courtier inspired rich and often contrasting interpretations in Northern European court societies. While perpetuating traditional court culture in France and Flanders, the courtier in England and the Germanic countries embraced emerging social paradigms of the Protestant reform. In societies lacking an official court such as the United-Provinces, the figure of the courtier was largely redefined. Discussions will focus on symbolic forms of the courtier in the visual arts as well as in other disciplines to which the notion of decorum is central such as architecture and the decorative arts.

Die Tagung „Politische Repräsentation und das Symbolische“ lädt Vertreter der Politikwissenschaften und benachbarter Disziplinen wie der Philosophie, Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften dazu ein, über zentrale Anliegen politischer Repräsentation in modernen Demokratien nachzudenken und diese mit genuinen politikwissenschaftlichen Fragen zu verknüpfen.

Ce colloque se propose de traiter du rôle que jouent les marges dans les définitions de l'art contemporain, et notamment dans celles qu’élaborent ses acteurs. Il s’agira de comprendre les marges et la marginalité dans le champ de l’art selon leur caractère double : comme prise de position programmatique ou comme situation imposée. Au niveau de la production de l’art, nous nous intéresserons aux pratiques artistiques qui donnent une place à ce qui est à la marge du domaine traditionnel de l'art – et par là-même brouillent les frontières et remettent en question les conceptions établies. Ce colloque a pour objectif d'interroger les concepts de marge et de marginalité comme outils de la construction du positionnement artistique dans l'art contemporain et comme instrument de définition des pratiques des acteurs.

Le colloque « Art contemporain et marges » interroge le rôle des marges dans les définitions de l'art contemporain, et notamment dans celles qu’élaborent ses acteurs. Il s’agira de comprendre les marges et la marginalité dans le champ de l’art selon leur caractère double : comme prise de position programmatique ou comme situation imposée. La réflexion sur la marginalité est-elle à même de mettre en lumière des traits spécifiques à l’art contemporain ? Cette problématique sera abordée dans une perspective interdisciplinaire – croisant les champs de la sociologie, de la philosophie, de la géographie et de l'histoire de l'art – et internationale.

Das Alexander von Humboldt Institut für Internet und Gesellschaft (HIIG) lädt Nachwuchsforscher-innen zu einem gemeinsamen Kolloquium in Berlin ein. Intransdisziplinären Diskussionsrunden können dabei die eigenen Forschungsarbeiten im Themenfeld Internet & Gesellschaft vorgestellt und im engen Austausch mit anderen Experten diskutiert werden. Den Schwerpunkt des Berliner Internet & Gesellschaft Kolloquiums 2012 bilden insbesondere die Themen Patterns of Participation, Global Rules and Regulation, Transformation of the Public Sphere, Open Science und Business Models and Internet-enabled Innovation. -

Practices, actors and spaces of confinement : circulations and transferts

Les lieux d'enfermement – prisons, hôpitaux, monastères, centres de rétention, centres éducatifs, casernes, etc. – ont fait l'objet ces dernières décennies d'un nombre croissant de travaux historiques et sociologiques. Une partie de ces recherches, doublement inspirée des projets goffmanien et foucaldien d'étude des « institutions totales » et des « institutions disciplinaires », a notamment permis d’affiner la compréhension sociologique de ces lieux en encourageant leur appréhension par l’ethnographie. Un autre volet de recherche très fourni a porté sur leur inscription dans l’histoire, en visant notamment à mettre en évidence les éventuelles continuités existant entre les formes contemporaines de confinement et leurs précédents historiques. Ces différents travaux ont ainsi permis de dégager des « modèles » permettant de penser ensemble les différentes formes de gouvernement des populations par l’enfermement. Ils ont également contribué à mettre en évidence les superpositions pouvant exister entre ces différentes institutions, par exemple en termes de groupes enfermés ou de pratiques et de logiques d’enfermement. -

La falsification de documents officiels est conçue comme un moyen de mieux comprendre les dispositifs de l'administration elle-même, ainsi que les savoirs et savoir-faire auxquels elle donne lieu parmi ses « usagers ». À cette fin, une diversité de contextes impériaux, nationaux ou locaux, à l'époque moderne et contemporaine, sont adoptés comme cas d'étude. Sont plus particulièrement représentés l'Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique, sur l'Empire ottoman, la Turquie et le Moyen Orient. -
