History and polemics: historiographical debates and the public space

Ever since history became an academic knowledge, historiographical debates have been exceptional moments of construction, condensation and dissensus, often resulting in historiographical turns. Controversies around specific themes have divided entire fields of knowledge production, bringing into light different, often contrasting conceptions, methodologies and practices of historical knowledge. Such debates were, at the same time, moments in which the description and interpretation of the past represented a public intervention in the present, in which the defense of a certain way of making sense of history was also a way of taking of sides in a specific contemporary political discussion. Historiographical polemics were therefore moments in which historiographical knowledge had to confront in the public space other approaches to the past, thus making visible, and challenging, the paradigms that rule the historical discipline and public history.

Ce colloque interroge la tendance monolinguistique et uniformatrice contrariant l'idée d'un monde global de toutes les langues et de toutes les cultures. Cette idée sera la prémisse principale qui conduira les débats, idée qui entend également que l’apprentissage d’une variété de langues étrangères peut ouvrir la porte au dialogue, dépasser les frontières et enrichir les cultures. Dans le monde actuel qui affirme les frontières et réaffirme les identités pour dépasser la déconnexion et l’incommunicabilité, nous croyons au polyglottisme naturel des espaces frontaliers, au cosmopolisme culturel séculier et à leur porosité.

Making Sense of Latin Classics in the Middle Ages

12th Celtic Conference in Classics (panel 11)

The aim of this panel is to explore how medieval authors have dealt with the Classical heritage within their own cultural context. This enquiry could illustrate different degrees of exploitation of classical texts: from systematic excerption to scattered quotations naturalized in different frameworks, from the reshaping of biographies, political and philosophical treatises to the reuse of poetical patterns in order to convey new values. Making sense always implies a multiple perspective. The goal of this panel is to encourage the interaction between different points of view – historical, philological, literary, philosophical, scientific – in order to get a better understanding of the cultural background through which the Classics had to pass before reaching us.

As a potent tool for spreading ideas and ideologies, cultural literacy helps shape world-views and social attitudes in indelible ways that need further investigation.

Langue et savoirs. Déclinaisons multidisciplinaires en français

Si le français ne saurait à plusieurs titres endosser le rôle et le statut de lingua franca, il n’en demeure pas moins un atout et un moteur, parfois surprenants, pour la pensée, la création, l’interprétation, la recherche d’actualité et l’approche de l’altérité. Comment alors « définir la contribution de l’école à une gestion profitable des formes scolaires de contacts avec l’altérité sociétale » ? (Beacco 2018). Quel statut et quelle fortune pour les sections européennes dans les écoles et l’enseignement de langues aux spécialistes d’autres disciplines (LANSAD) dans les formations d’enseignement supérieur ? S’agit-il de valoriser aujourd’hui, plus que jamais, ce potentiel pour la diffusion du français et de remplir ce « réservoir de francophonie et de francophilie » (Beacco 2016 : 43) ?

Publication of books in e-book format

Centro Interdisciplinar de História, Culturas e Sociedades (CIDEHUS) has a collection of books with peer review: Biblioteca: Estudos e Colóquios – intended to the publication of monographic works. This collection has an international scientific committee and an editorial committee, in addition to an adviser. Every year, this collection makes an open call to the academic community in general and not only to the members of CIDEHUS for publication purposes. This is the 2018 call. The works, however, will almost assuredly only be published in 2019.

Crossing Borders: Intellectuals of the Right and Politics in Europe and Latin America

Transnational Perspectives

During the interwar period, authoritarian movements and regimes of the right - both of the "old" authoritarian and of the "new" radical varieties - professed their faith in national values but at the same time saw themselves as national agents of an otherwise international intellectual and political wave. Starting from the mid-1920s, a growing sense of shared goals, commonality of vision, and sense of history-making mission led them to draw on each other for inspiration and support. It soon became clear that these movements and regimes embraced ideas from each other, actively studying each other’s discourses and initiatives in the political field. The conference aims to promote a different understanding of the role of intellectuals of the interwar right who perceived themselves as transnational agents “at the service of an idea”.

L’objectif principal de ce nouveau colloque, en continuité thématique avec les deux éditions précédentes, est d’analyser les phénomènes de circulation et de mobilité des élites lettrées (clercs, universitaires, praticiens), des enlumineurs, des manuscrits, des textes, des modèles artistiques et des idées liés à la pratique du droit dans le territoire européen avec une attention particulière pour les contrées méridionales (péninsule Ibérique, France du Midi et Italie).

L’imaginaire ésotérique. Littérature, cinéma, bande dessinée

Pas besoin d’être initié pour constater la présence explicite ou implicite d’un imaginaire ésotérique dans des textes marquants de la tradition occidentale (et pas seulement occidentale). Thématisé dans des cadres de référence spécifiques, comme les récits gothiques, reconfiguré dans des modèles narratifs et symboliques issus de traditions hermétiques et mystiques différentes mais apparentées (alchimique, kabbalistique, gnostique, maçonnique), l’imaginaire ésotérique nourrit notre littérature (Goethe, Yourcenar, Pessoa, les contes de fées), notre cinéma (Bergman, Spielberg, Kubrick, Annaud, Polanski, West), notre bande dessinée (Pratt, Gaiman, Giroux, Arakawa) de ses images et textes sacrés et de ses discours hétérodoxes et chiffrés. Cette prégnance de l’imaginaire ésotérique témoigne de notre persistante curiosité concernant le transcendant en toutes variations et gradations. Car l’ésotérisme est sans doute un des lieux clé, c’est le cas de le dire, de l’élaboration du sens. Et on dirait que le sens ésotérique, mystérieux, caché, codé, symbolisé, loin d’épuiser ses virtualités, les intensifie par ses déplacements intermédiatiques, donc vulgarisants et exotériques.

The Commentary Tradition on Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologiae (15th-18th Century)

La Somme théologique est un des classiques de l’histoire de la théologie et de la philosophie. Au-delà de son énorme influence au Moyen Âge, la Somme a aussi marqué la théologie et la philosophie au début de l’époque moderne. Cela s’explique aussi par le fait que la Somme a remplacé les Sentences de Pierre Lombard comme le texte par lequel la théologie était enseignée dans les universités catholiques à partir de la fin du XV^e et jusqu’au XVIII^e siècle. Ce remplacement s’est produit premièrement dans les studia dominicaines allemands dans la seconde moitié du XV^e siècle et, au niveau universitaire, à Salamanque avec Francisco de Vitoria dans les années 1530. Dans quelques décennies, la Somme était adoptée comme le livre d’enseignement de la théologie dans toute l’Europe de la Contre-Réforme.

La littérature française et francophone à l'épreuve de la mondialisation

Le phénomène complexe de la mondialisation – du fait même de ses implications culturelles et identitaires, intéresse, interroge et met la littérature (toute littérature) à l’épreuve, et au défi de se (re)définir et de décliner des approches nouvelles de son rapport à l’espace, aux lieux et genres d’écriture. De ce fait, la littérature française contemporaine et les vastes littératures francophones ou allophones d’expression française s’avèrent, à maints égards, un miroir des apories et des paradoxes que le phénomène mondialisant fait subir à nos sociétés contemporaines et qui engendrent des ambiguïtés ou des échanges identitaires et interculturels des plus féconds, mais aussi des plus impromptus.

Estudos wittgensteinianos

Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), filósofo austríaco, naturalizado britânico, foi um dos principais atores da virada linguística na filosofia do século XX. Suas principais contribuições foram feitas nos campos da lógica, filosofia da linguagem, filosofia da matemática e filosofia da mente. Muitos o consideram o filósofo mais importante do século passado. O Grupo Luso-Brasileiro de Estudos Wittgensteinianos (GRULBEW) organiza um colóquio anual luso-brasileiro sobre Wittgenstein, que este ano terá lugar em Lisboa, dias 9 e 10 de julho.

Configurações contemporâneas do racismo e do eurocentrismo

Debates sobre os discursos e práticas académicos e políticos

The main objective of this international workshop is to promote a debate that engages both with current issues on knowledge/history production and with contemporary discourses/policies on immigration and ‘integration’, taking their intersection as crucial to unravel the relations between the constant (re)making of nation boundaries and ideas of political belonging. We propose that a breakthrough approach requires the challenging of a Eurocentric paradigm, now hegemonic, that is preventing a thorough debate on racism as being embedded on the history of modern science, capitalism, liberal democracies and the state of law.
