Social justice in times of uncertainty
The 2021 Congress of the Swiss Sociological Association (SSA)
Social Justice in Times of Uncertainty takes as a starting point the health pandemic that erupted in 2020, which led societies across the world to cope with disruptions in the provisioning of goods and services, means of livelihood, and fundamental freedom – not least, that of movement. The crisis also revealed global and local inequalities, translated into who has the right to live or not, and raised new questions around (in)justice in the contemporary world. In light of the turmoil experienced, as a globalized society and within our communities, this congress emphasizes the relevance of social and environmental justice in the making of a fair society, asking the question: in times of uncertainty, what does it mean to live a good life in a just society?

The role of art in and towards sustainable changes
While the sociology of arts and culture has long dealt with classical sociological questions of artistic production, distribution and reception, the concern for ecological issues and sustainability has only recently been taken up. On the one hand, the artistic field is an economy and an industry like any other, where the use of natural and human resources leads to questions of inequality, access and power relations. On the other hand, it represents a particular case, as intertwined with the issues of sustainability are those of artistic meaning, reception and cultural practices, and social factors different than in other fields. What is the environmental and social impact of art? Can art be sustainable, both ecologically and socially through time, and how? What can we make of the sustainability of art that is made to last long – sculpture, painting, print, recorded production – as well as of the required preservations techniques and places? And, on the other hand, what is the place of ephemeral art when considering sustainability (in all its aspects): street art, graffiti, art installations, live music and theatre? How can art support transformations towards more sustainable societies? A change in individual and collective practices is needed to achieve the SDGs. What role can or do art and artists play in these transformations? Can artists contribute to shaping alternative paths?

Politicizing and Depoliticizing Work in the Contemporary Firm and Beyond
" The Future of Work", Congress of the Swiss Sociological Association 2019 | Workshop n°25
The employment relation that emerged after World War II has undergone significant transformations in the present context. Phenomena such as job precariousness, difficult working conditions and the increasing number of working poor become more relevant. In addition to this, the spatio-temporal boundaries between professional and private life are increasingly blurred. These challenges are sometimes tackled via individual arrangements, e.g. about the working time, in such cases a “depoliticizing” of work can be observed. However, counter-processes of “politicization” are also taking place in case of reactions – such as resistances or mobilizations – aimed to negotiated more broadly and collectively the issues linked with the employment relation. Those reactions can involve new actors and their scope depends on the country and/or the economic sector. This workshop questions the extent of such politicizing and depoliticizing processes in order to grasp their size, the issues and the involved actors.

How to make: analysis of the process of creation in anthropology
L'analyse du processus créatif est actuellement un objet de recherche en pleine diffusion. Comment les chercheurs en sciences sociales peuvent-ils aujourd'hui construire leur propre objet d'étude autour du processus de création ? Plus particulièrement, quelle pourrait être la spécificité d’une approche anthropologique ? Comment gérer la pluridisciplinarité et les rapports avec d'autres disciplines scientifiques étudiant déjà des pratiques similaires (études musicologiques ou théâtrales, histoire de l'art, etc) ? Quelle méthodologie adopter et comment construire un terrain ethnographique cohérent et pertinent autour des processus de création ? Ce sont à ces quelques questions que ce colloque a pour ambition de répondre.

Les situations incertaines représentent une part inévitable de la vie sociale ; cependant, les collectivités diffèrent dans leur appréhension des situations dont l’issue est incertaine, et dans les réponses qu’elles y apportent en fonction des outils (matériels comme immatériels) à leur disposition. Dans leur combat contre l’incertitude, les acteurs tentent de changer la situation, de redéfinir leur vie et d’assurer leur futur. Ces réponses sont individuelles ou collectives et les institutions sociales, les autorités par exemple, peuvent participer à la résolution des difficultés rencontrées. Les manières de gérer l’incertitude sont culturelles et, dès lors, peuvent différer.

Research Assistant Position in Quantitative Methods for the Social Sciences
The PhD student will write a thesis under the supervision of Dr M. Studer and Prof. G. Ritschard as part of the research project IP 214 of NCCR LIVES « Measuring and modelling vulnerability dynamics in a life-course context ». This research project intends to formalize a general framework for the quantitative modelling of life-course vulnerability. This includes two aspects: the measurement and conceptualization of vulnerability as a state or a risk (such as being at risk to fall in an unwanted situation) and as a process (e.g., social disaffiliation process). In a second stage, the research project will investigate methods to measure how vulnerability (measured as a state or process) is linked to explanatory individual factors (sex, social class…) or contextual dimensions (unemployment rates, social policies…). An application of the developed methodological framework in socioeconomics, such as vulnerability processes in employment, is also planned.

Assistant HES (Doctoral student) at Geneva School of Business Administration
The Geneva School of Business Administration (HEG-Geneva) offers a Research Assistant (Doctoral student) position for three years starting from 1st September 2013.The doctoral student will participate to the project « Organizing, Communicating, and Costing in Risk Governance: Learning Lessons from the H1N1 Pandemic », financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation. He or she will be in charge of the research components dedicated to costing around H1N1. This comparative study will involve qualitative fieldwork in three countries, namely Switzerland, the United States and Japan. He or she will collaborate with a post-doctoral fellow focusing on issues related to organization and communication. He or she will have to write a PhD thesis on H1N1 costing issues and will be supervised by Prof. Nathalie Brender. The project is funded for three years.

Pour l'année 2013, le Forum de recherche sociologique traitera des transformations du marché du travail et des relations industrielles en Suisse en perspective comparée. Tout en se penchant sur une problématique d'actualité, le Département de sociologie de l'université de Genève souhaite investir un thème aux frontières de l'économie, de la science politique et de la sociologie. La problématique du chômage concerne la société en son ensemble, et est fortement liée au marché du travail ainsi qu'aux institutions. Le Forum de cette année tentera d'apporter quelques éléments de réponse à ces défis économiques et sociaux de notre temps.

Autour de la thématique de la lutte contre la pauvreté et l'exclusion, de nombreux chercheur-e-s, praticien-ne-s et enseignant-e-s des domaines du travail social et de disciplines avoisinantes se réuniront pour apporter leurs contributions au débat sur les problèmes que la crise socioéconomique impose à la profession. L’objectif de ces journées est d’aborder les questions autour du sens et des enjeux de la crise socioéconomique pour la pratique comme pour l’enseignement et la recherche, d’ouvrir de nouvelles pistes d’action et de réflexion et de créer des synergies entre les institutions académiques et les lieux de pratique. Décliné en ateliers, symposiums et conférences plénières, le programme offre une grande diversité de thèmes permettant de s’interroger sur les défis actuels du travail social. -
