Anchoring International Organizations in the Study of Organizational Sociology
This paper session aims to bring together scholars who adopt a sociological perspective to the study of international organizations (IOs). IOs have historically been studied by jurists and later by political scientists through the prism of theories in international relations (IR). In the past two decade, growing scholarship in IR has shifted the focus to analyzing IOs as actors in IR in their own right. To this end, scholars have not only developed new methodologies, traditionally used by anthropologists and organizational sociologists, but have also embraced sociology as a discipline and more precisely the field of organizational sociology. In this way, IOs have been studied as bureaucracies, as organizations within which various actors compete, which comply and produce norms and values. Nowadays, organizational sociology provides a fascinating basis to study IOs not only from within, but also with respect to their environment in a dynamic perspective.

Social justice in times of uncertainty
The 2021 Congress of the Swiss Sociological Association (SSA)
Social Justice in Times of Uncertainty takes as a starting point the health pandemic that erupted in 2020, which led societies across the world to cope with disruptions in the provisioning of goods and services, means of livelihood, and fundamental freedom – not least, that of movement. The crisis also revealed global and local inequalities, translated into who has the right to live or not, and raised new questions around (in)justice in the contemporary world. In light of the turmoil experienced, as a globalized society and within our communities, this congress emphasizes the relevance of social and environmental justice in the making of a fair society, asking the question: in times of uncertainty, what does it mean to live a good life in a just society?

Pandemic, poverty, social policies and intervention
Les liens entre pandémie, pauvreté, politique sociale et intervention sont au cœur de ce colloque de deux jours du comité de recherche 34 « Intervention et politiques sociales » de l’Association des sociologues de langue française (AISLF) qui sera organisé à la Haute école de travail social et de la santé HETSL (HES-SO). Il aura lieu à Lausanne (Suisse) du 11 février 2021 au 12 février 2021. Les contributions à distance, notamment pour des contraintes sanitaires, seront acceptées.

Capable d’obtenir des financements de recherche et de diriger des équipes de recherches, elle ou il déposera des projets au FNS, à Innosuisse, à Horizon Europe ou dans d'autres instances.

Ce premier cycle de conférences est consacré aux rapports, tensions et articulations entre différents types de savoirs en santé. Nous y interrogeons les formes de légitimation mais également de (re)mise en question des connaissances et des pratiques, dans les relations entre les professionnel.le.s et les malades/patient.e.s et plus largement dans le champ de la santé et du soin. Savoirs académiques et pratiques sont mis en dialogue et chaque conférence est suivie d’une discussion initiée du point de vue de la clinique.

5th STS-CH International conference
STS-CH, the Swiss Science and Technology Studies (STS) association, lauches the call for contributions to its 5th International Conference. Taking place at the University of Lausanne, by the Lake Geneva, from 7 to 9 September 2020, this 3-day event aims at bringing together scholars interested in STS across all disciplines, at all career levels. The overarching topic, “Multiple Matters: From neglected things to arts of noticing fragility” highlights the salience of research which addresses the fragility not only of the Earth and its ecosystems, but also of large technical systems, forms of life, human bodies and scientific knowledge.

Politicizing and Depoliticizing Work in the Contemporary Firm and Beyond
" The Future of Work", Congress of the Swiss Sociological Association 2019 | Workshop n°25
The employment relation that emerged after World War II has undergone significant transformations in the present context. Phenomena such as job precariousness, difficult working conditions and the increasing number of working poor become more relevant. In addition to this, the spatio-temporal boundaries between professional and private life are increasingly blurred. These challenges are sometimes tackled via individual arrangements, e.g. about the working time, in such cases a “depoliticizing” of work can be observed. However, counter-processes of “politicization” are also taking place in case of reactions – such as resistances or mobilizations – aimed to negotiated more broadly and collectively the issues linked with the employment relation. Those reactions can involve new actors and their scope depends on the country and/or the economic sector. This workshop questions the extent of such politicizing and depoliticizing processes in order to grasp their size, the issues and the involved actors.

C'est dans cette perspective qu'un colloque se tiendra à Lausanne en octobre 2019, consacré aux mouvements lesbiens, homosexuels et trans en France, dans les années 1970-1980.

Migrations, intercultural relations and power relations - calls for contributions
17th international conference of the Association internationale pour la recherche interculturelle (ARIC)
Ce congrès propose une articulation fine entre les débats scientifiques sur les migrations, l’interculturel et le vivre ensemble d’une part et les pratiques professionnelles d’accueil et de l’intégration, de l’autre. Dans le contexte d’une dramatisation sociopolitique des phénomènes de mobilité, les migrations sont présentées comme autant de déclencheurs de crises sociétales, engendrant une exacerbation des tensions entre les insiders (les « établi∙e∙s ») et les outsiders (les groupes et individus nouvellement arrivés). Pourtant, les réalités sont souvent beaucoup plus nuancées que cette dramatisation ne le laisse entrevoir. Au-delà de de la question des inégalités sociales et de la répartition de ressources, les discours et les pratiques envers les populations issues de la migration contribuent à mettre en place des formes de pouvoir qui créent un climat favorable aux interactions entre populations et participent de la construction d’un espace commun parfois visibles dans différents univers d’expressions artistiques partagés ou, au contraire, entravent les interactions, la cohabitation, l’intégration mutuelle.

Si de nombreux pays européens s’inspirent du modèle allemand, la formation professionnelle suisse, qu’elle soit initiale (degré secondaire) ou supérieure (niveau tertiaire), est au centre de l’attention des gouvernements qui y voient une solution possible face aux crises économiques et surtout au chômage endémique des jeunes. Les IXe rencontres « Jeunes et Sociétés en Europe et autour de la Méditerranée » portent ainsi leur attention sur cet espace de formation, prisme particulièrement pertinent pour réfléchir aux enjeux sociaux, politiques, économiques, mais aussi éthiques et déontologiques au cœur des expériences des jeunes, qu’elles ou ils soient en période de formation ou déjà inséré-e-s sur le marché du travail.

Professionalism and the challenge of social commitment
Ces journées de réflexion explorent, d’une part, l’évolution des enjeux théoriques et pratiques de manière à éclairer les dimensions politiques qui affectent l’agir professionnel. D’autre part, nous aborderons la question de l’identité du travail social et plus particulièrement des professionnels à partir des raisons et motivations qui les mobilisent dans l’action qu’ils mènent. Cette réflexion prendra également appui à partir des pratiques qui se situent à la frontière des territoires historiques du travail social afin d’appréhender les transformations de l’action sociale comme des vecteurs de mutations identitaires.

Gendering Humanitarian Knowledge
Global Histories of Compassion from the Mid-Nineteenth Century to the Present
The conference invites scholars to think about the notion of "humanitarian knowledge" in a multidisciplinary way, by combining perspectives such as gender history, the histories ofemotions and the body, literary and visual culture studies, global health history, as well as the history of institutions and their agents. All of them are useful to explore the transnational networks through which humanitarian practices and ideas have been promoted, disseminated and standardised.The conference brings together scholars interested in working on the history of humanitarian knowledge from a gender perspective. The interventions deal with stories of flesh and blood, which put women’s and men’s humanitarian experiences at their centre, in order to inscribe their local practices within a global history of compassion from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

Minimising Risks, Selling Promises?
Reproductive Health, Techno-Scientific Innovations and the Production of Ignorance
Over the last decades, medical techno-scientific innovations have radically transformed reproductive processes at every level by putting the reproductive body under strict biomedical surveillance and submitting it to significant technological manipulation. Most of these innovations, often promoted as miracles and even revolutions, were generalised very rapidly thanks to ever-growing national and global markets. Their side effects on health were, however, insufficiently studied, or even ignored, until scandals (diethylstilbestrol, thalidomide, primodos, Dalkon Shield) or controversies (contraceptive pill, hormonal replacement therapy) unavoidably made them public. At the crossroads of STS, sociology of risk, medical anthropology, gender studies and ignorance studies, the aim of this international conference is to analyse the dynamics of ignorance production prior to, during but also after the rapid expansion of reproductive technologies, innovations and products.

Une des conclusions et ouvertures du premier rendez-vous « Appropriation inventive et critique » a porté sur la fin des lacunes, des terrains vagues et des temps morts dans un système à rotation rapide. Dans le cadre d’une approche transdisciplinaire, nous nous sommes notamment interrogés sur la transformation de la ville en un « spectacle total » multisensoriel, multiscalaire et permanent. Nous avons repéré les risques de trop plein, de saturation, d’hyper-usage liés à la disparition des friches, des temps d’arrêt et des lacunes et à l’émergence d’un continuum spatio-temporel.

Many parts of the contemporary Middle East are confronted with war, sectarianism, transnational interferences, uprisings, and a comeback of authoritarian regimes. This brings about various difficulties for ethnographic research as a practice of knowledge production based on the immersion of researchers in given social contexts and the subsequent writing up and publishing of texts. The international conference No country for anthropologists? Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East explores the obstacles to do ethnography in the Middle East and take them as the starting point for reflection upon the role of anthropology with a view to the Middle East of today.
