Between variability and singularity: crossing theoretical, qualitative and computer-based approaches to types and typologies in archaeology

Call for paper EAA 2021

This session is based on the ambition to revisit the "type" as an analytical and theoretical concept inorder to re-activate type-sensitive archaeological research or to develop genuine alternatives. We invite scholars from varying backgrounds to interrogate our apprehension of types, and to re-consider the basic explanatory value of types andtypologies, especially so vis-à-vis computer-based methods, emerging theoretical frameworks and, more generally, the consequences of such approaches and research frameworks for our understanding of types and typological thinking as core concepts ofarchaeological practice.

Scholarships in Berlin - Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives

The Study Foundation of the House of Representatives is a grant programme for young researchers from the United States of America, Great Britain, France, and the successor states of the Soviet Union, who want either to work on Berlin along with German as well as German-international issues or to use research facilities in Berlin. The Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives shall contribute to the further development of a generation of young scholars from the aforementioned states whose research issues deal with Berlin or Germany. Moreover, the young researchers shall use their stay in Berlin in order to make themselves familiar with the political and social system in Berlin and Germany, and build lasting relationships between themselves and with the Berlin House of Representatives. Thus, the Foundation seeks to awaken or strengthen long-term interest in and understanding of Germany in the aforementioned states.

Rethinking tobacco history: Commodities, empire and agency in global perspective, 1780–1960

Tobacco was one of the most important globally traded commodities from the 17th century through to the present day, and yet it has received relatively little attention in the historiography of modern empires in comparison to other commodities, such as sugar or cotton. As a result, recent approaches to rewriting the history of European imperialism from a more global perspective have hardly been problematized with regard to the peculiarities of tobacco history. Nowadays, studies no longer understand empire as a rigid relationship between metropole and colonies, but take the dynamics of actors within an empire as seriously as the networks and global processes that crossed imperial borders, or indeed lay beyond them. The conference starts from this assumption.

Ist es möglich, den Begriff der masse zu verwenden, ohne in eine vollständige Verurteilung des kollektiven Handelns oder in eine unreflektierte Aufwertung zu verfallen? Sollten wir immer noch an der Opposition zwischen der Masse und dem Individuum festhalten? Das Verhältnis zwischen Masse und Individuum kann unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten untersucht werden: Wie kann eine Masse sich als politisches Subjekt konstituieren? Mit welchen Mitteln und aus welchen Perspektiven stellen künstlerische Werke die Beziehung zwischen der Masse und dem Individuum dar und wie verändern sie diese? Welche Umgestaltungen erfährt die Masse als Objekt der Sozialwissenschaften? Wie wirkt sich die kapitalistische Moderne auf die moralische und psychische Autonomie der Individuen aus?

Solidarity and Humanitarianism in the Global South between Decolonization and the Cold War (1960s-1980s)

This two-day workshop, to be held in Berlin, aims to bring together doctoral students, post-doctoral students and experienced researchers working on the history of solidarity and humanitarian engagement in the countries of the Global South, from the 1960s to the 1980s, in the context of decolonization and the Cold War. On the one hand, it offers the opportunity to present and discuss current research. On the other hand, based on these concrete examples, it wishes to offer a space for exchange and discussion on the theoretical and methodological dimensions of this research field.

Penser la violence en Afrique au travers de l’expérience des femmes: vulnérabilité et subversion

Les deux journées du « Junges Forum » seront consacrées à penser la violence en Afrique au travers de l’expérience des femmes dans une perspective interdisciplinaire. L’objet ici n’est pas de se concentrer sur l’expérience passive, pour peu qu’elle existe, de la violence. Il s’agit bien ici de s’intéresser à la manière de l’appréhender, de la retranscrire, de la faire sienne et de la renverser, qu’elle soit symbolique, sociale, domestique, épistémique, politique ou sexuelle. Le « Junges Forum » vise à accueillir des communications de jeunes chercheur.euse.s (doctorant.e.s et postdoctorant.e.s) pour permettre des échanges interdisciplinaires et discussions ouvertes sur la thématique. Les communications de différents champs de la recherche scientifique (anthropologie, études cinématographiques, études sur le genre, psychologie, sciences historiques, sciences littéraires, sociologie, etc.) devront exclusivement se concentrées sur les aires géographiques du continent africain.

This two-day conference aims to create a framework for a broader understanding of the ways in which Spanish and non-Spanish musicians (including composers, performers, conductors, musicologists, critics, and others) relate to this key historical and ideological conflict of the 20^th century. These relationships are not limited to the wartime period but also include the subsequent decades, in which a large number of musicians from Spain and abroad reflected on the confrontation and its consequences in their work.

Ziel dieser Konferenz ist es, die Produktion von wissenschaftlichem, medizinischem, künstlerischem und technologischem Wissen außerhalb der Universität in Europa zwischen dem 17. und 21. Jahrhundert zu untersuchen. Es geht darum zu verstehen, wer diese außeruniversitären Akteure sind und die Wechselwirkungen zwischen ihren Forschungsbedingungen, dem erzeugten Wissen und seiner Rezeption zu untersuchen. Der Titel dieser Frage soll weder eine Marginalität der betreffenden Akteure noch ihre Zentralität implizieren, sondern fordert uns auf, die Komplexität der Wechselwirkungen zwischen sozialem und wissenschaftlichem Umfeld zu untersuchen.

Gärten und Politik : Gärten im Spannungsfeld von politischer Inanspruchnahme und gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen

Geschichte, Erfahrungen, Perspektiven. Deutsch-französische Fachtagung

Le CEREG (EA 4223) de l’Université de Nanterre, l’équipe de recherche « Mondes allemands » (EA 1577) de l’Université Paris VIII Vincennes Saint-Denis, l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Versailles et la fondation Fürst-Pückler-Park Bad Muskau organisent, du 14 au 16 mai 2020 un colloque franco-allemand sur le thème « “Sortir de l’enclos” : jardins et politique(s). Histoires, expériences et perspectives franco-allemandes ». Il s'agira de s’interroger sur les liens qu’ont entretenus, depuis le XVII^e siècle, les jardins avec la politique en France et en Allemagne, mais aussi d’examiner de récentes initiatives où le jardin, compris comme processus vivant, se transforme en lieu d’expression de la démocratie et de la citoyenneté. L’histoire des deux pays, parfois adverse et souvent intimement mêlée, incite en effet à tendre des miroirs pour révéler des mouvements et aspirations profondes des deux sociétés, étudier les contrastes et transferts mutuels, et croiser les études de terrain dans ce domaine encore peu exploré qu’est l'art comparé des jardins.

Innovation et communautés médiévales en Europe du Nord-Ouest (1200-1500)

Le lien bien établi entre innovation et modernisation suscite de nombreuses interrogations aujourd'hui. Toutefois ce phénomène est loin d’être propre aux sociétés modernes et contemporaines et la fin du Moyen Âge, qui n’a encore jamais fait l’objet d’une étude systématique sur ce sujet, se révèle essentielle pour comprendre les mécanismes humains d’adaptation, mais aussi les enjeux culturels qui facilitent ou bloquent les transitions. Débarrassés de toute perspective téléologique sur l’innovation, la période (XIII^e- début XVI^e siècle) et l’espace (Europe du Nord-Ouest) que nous souhaitons placer au cœur de cette rencontre pourront servir de laboratoire d’analyse, afin d’estimer les conditions de réception de l’innovation et les réactions suscitées par l’irruption de la nouveauté.

France, Allemagne, Afrique : représentations, transferts, relations

Appréhendé à l’époque coloniale comme le « laboratoire de la modernité » européenne, le continent africain est aujourd’hui partie intégrante de l’histoire et de l’avenir de l’Europe mais aussi du monde. Dans son essai Afrotopia récemment traduit en allemand, l’économiste et écrivain sénégalais Felwine Sarr dénonce le mythe occidental du développement projeté sur les sociétés africaines et appelle à décoloniser les esprits de par et d’autre de la Méditerranée pour permettre aux Afriques de redevenir le « poumon spirituel du monde. » Ce plaidoyer pour un changement de paradigme s’inscrit dans une relation Europe-Afrique à refonder. Partant de ces réflexions, Le XV^e colloque du comité franco-allemand des historiens entend interroger cette histoire croisée entre la France, l’Allemagne et le continent africain pour les XIX^e et XX^e siècles.

2020 world conference of public history

Since 2011, International Federation for Public History (IFP)H has been dedicated to building an international and multi-lingual community of public historians working both outside and inside academia. The main role of the Federation is to foster the development of Public History worldwide, creating and coordinating networks and national associations for public history, promoting teaching, research, theoretical inquiry, and other activities that engage the public with the past, history and individual and collective memories. Berlin, which has been called the “Rome of contemporary history,” is an ideal location for a major meeting of public historians from across the globe. Like few other places in the world it offers many different layers of history, that not only still matter and are controversial locally or regionally, but nationally and even internationally.
