Scholarships in Berlin - Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives
The Study Foundation of the House of Representatives is a grant programme for young researchers from the United States of America, Great Britain, France, and the successor states of the Soviet Union, who want either to work on Berlin along with German as well as German-international issues or to use research facilities in Berlin. The Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives shall contribute to the further development of a generation of young scholars from the aforementioned states whose research issues deal with Berlin or Germany. Moreover, the young researchers shall use their stay in Berlin in order to make themselves familiar with the political and social system in Berlin and Germany, and build lasting relationships between themselves and with the Berlin House of Representatives. Thus, the Foundation seeks to awaken or strengthen long-term interest in and understanding of Germany in the aforementioned states.

Between Life and Existence. Nietzsche and French Existentialism
Our symposium therefore aims to close this research gap by including all relevant disciplines (philosophy, literary studies, history of ideas ...). Contributions can deal with biographical aspects of the subject (to what extent did the French existentialists really read Nietzsche?), comparisons of the respective philosophies, or with questions pertaining to the topicality of the theses and matters discussed. We endeavor to cover the travel and accommodation costs for the speakers, but cannot guarantee them at the present time.

The protection of cultural heritage in Europe and Rhineland
Franziskus Count Wolff Metternich and the Kunstschutz during the Second World War
Ce colloque traitera de la protection du patrimoine culturel en Europe et en Rhénanie. Franziskus comte Wolff Metternich (1893-1978), conservateur provincial et du Land de Rhénanie entre 1928 et 1950, et directeur du Kunstschutz dans les territoires occupés pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, joue par son activité un rôle important dans la réflexion sur la protection des biens culturels au XXe siècle. Le colloque se propose de présenter les résultats rassemblés par un projet de recherche de trois ans sur les sources du Kunstschutz et sur le réseau de Wolff Metternich, projet implanté au sein du LVR -AFZ (Archivberatungs- und Fortbildungszentrum du Landschaftsverband Rheinland / Centre de conseil et de formation en archives des autorités régionales de Rhénanie).

Rethinking the Technical and the Human in Global Connectivity
We invite contributions for our Workshop “Rethinking the Technical and the Human in Global Connectivity”, happening at Humboldt University Berlin, 24-25 May 2019. The materiality of technologies and infrastructures is significant; however, we think their impact on and interaction with societies has to be analysed in a global dimension as well. We hope to establish this approach for the broader field of African History, reacting and bringing attention to a growing interest in these questions indicated in a number of recently developed research projects and publications.

La LXeconférence internationale sur l’histoire militaire, qui aura lieu du 17 au 19 septembre 2019 à Potsdam, portera sur trois aspects de l’histoire militaire allemande : sur les rapports de politique militaire et de sécurité, entre domaine civil et militaire et au sein des forces armées ; les zones de convergence et de divergence entre l’Ouest et l’Est sur le plan allemand, européen et international ; le regard téléologique qu’on porte encore souvent sur les deux États allemands.

Franco-German research program
Le but de ce programme, financé par l'université franco-allemande, est de mettre en réseau, de manière transnationale et transdisciplinaire, et sur des recherches concernant le marché de l'art, les musées et les collections d'œuvres d'art, les doctorant(e)s et postdoctorant(e)s travaillant actuellement sur le marché de l'art et les collections d'œuvres d'art. Lors de journées d'études / conférences à Berlin et à Paris, ils présenteront leurs propres recherches, s'entretiendront avec des expert(e)s et spécialistes du pays voisin et, dans le cadre d'un programme d'accompagnement, auront accès aux « laboratoires » de musées et de recherche, aux maisons de ventes, aux galeries et aux archives.

Excess? Images of body, health, morality and emotions across the media
A central goal of the workshop is to open up an international exchange and to connect perspectives from the history of science, the history of emotions, the history of the body and media history in order to shed new light on a history of health as a cultural history. The event is part of the research project “The Healthy Self as Body Capital: Individuals, Market-Based Societies, and Body Politics in Visual Twentieth Century Europe” funded by the European Research Council under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Advanced Grant agreement No 694817) led by Christian Bonah (University of Strasbourg) and Anja Laukötter (Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin).

The spring school Visual History in the Twentieth Century: Bodies, Practices, and Emotions invites participants to engage in five days of intensive discussion on the relation between the history of the body, body politics, and film and television in the twentieth century. The spring school will take a transnational perspective and focus particular on developments in Germany, France and Great Britain.

Professors, students and public powers in Europe (1848-1945)
Cette journée d’études souhaite, sur la période d’un siècle allant des révolutions de 1848 à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, interroger la relation entre l’université et le politique. Il s’agira de réfléchir aux liens multiples entre acteurs du champ universitaire, qu’ils enseignent, étudient ou administrent, et acteurs du champ politique, dans l’espace européen. Une problématique centrale que cette journée d’études propose de questionner est celle de l’autonomie du champ universitaire, de sa constitution et de son éventuelle limitation, par rapport au champ politique, dans une période où l’institution universitaire est en pleine expansion et transformée par la formation de nouvelles disciplines, liée professionnalisation et la spécialisation des métiers scientifiques et intellectuels.

Le colloque entend intensifier le dialogue entre chercheurs français et allemands spécialistes de la Première Guerre mondiale et des cultures mémorielles, tant en littérature qu'en art, qui en sont issues. Les spécialistes des faits historiques, littéraires, culturels et sociaux s'intéresseront ainsi, sous l'angle d'une approche comparée, à l'année 1917 et aux initiatives de paix qui s'y déployèrent. Ce faisant, il s'agira de remplacer le manichéisme d'une historiographie nationale par une approche franco-allemande au coeur de laquelle l'aspiration à une sortie de guerre non corrélée à une victoire militaire sera observée dans toute sa dimension historique. Parallèlement, il s'agit, au cours d'une année commémorative 2017, de déplacer le regard vers la thématique des sorties de guerre conçue sous un angle interdisciplinaire convoquant les différentes disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales partageant une même historicité à croiser leurs approches au profit de l'étude d'un phénomène pluridimensionnel.

Romain Rolland and Germany during the Great War - connections, perception and reception
« Comment être plus négligé que ne l’est aujourd’hui Romain Rolland (1866-1944) ? », s’interrogeait Florent Georgesco dans une chronique publiée dans Le Monde des livres à l’occasion de la sortie du Journal de Vézelay. Ce constat, formulé en décembre 2012, est aujourd’hui en grande partie dépassé. Portée par le formidable engouement médiatique et scientifique suscité par le centenaire de la Grande Guerre, l’œuvre de Rolland est sortie du purgatoire dans lequel l’histoire l’avait enfermée.

A century and a half of diplomatic presence - France and Germany since 1871
Cette journée d'étude sera l'occasion de retracer un siècle et demi de présence diplomatique française en Allemagne depuis l'unification du Reich. Les lieux de cette présence – Berlin tout d'abord mais aussi Bonn et Munich –, les acteurs et les évolutions des pratiques diplomatiques seront au cœur de la réflexion. Mettant l'accent sur le quotidien des émissaires français, l'expérience de l'immersion en terre allemande et le travail interculturel qu'induit le travail diplomatique, cette journée s'incrit dans le renouveau contemporain de l'histoire de la diplomatie. Elle se déroulera dans un cadre permettant un dialogue, ouvert au public, entre chercheurs et praticiens de la diplomatie.

A Realm of Memory of the Cold War
Whether or not “the entire world” was looking at Berlin, as Reuter asserted, is one of the central questions to be addressed at our conference. Starting from the “frontline city” of Berlin, we will cast our glance to West Germany and its neighboring countries in order not only to frame the Berlin Airlift as a transnational memorial of the Cold War, but also to address, from outside, the question of whether Berlin was really the international focus of the East-West conflict back then, as the press and academia so often portray it.

El evento enfocará cuatro aspectos: la formación y el desarrollo de los discursos conservadores, su relación con el catolicismo, su carácter, a menudo, elitista y su orientación anticomunista.

Accidents and the role of the State in the 20th century
In the workshop on "Accidents and the role of the state" we want to discuss, from a historical perspective, the changing relationship between accidents and the modern state during the 20th century. Strasbourg)-FRIAS (Freiburg) joint research project on military accidents in France and Germany in the twentieth century. We are therefore especially interested in proposals that deal with the role of the military. However, relevant topics for the workshop could, of course, also come from the realm of the histories of technology, of environment, of medicine, or of the rise of the modern state. We are interested both in presentations of case studies as well as in more conceptual approaches on the topic. Contributions that deal with accidents in German and French history are highly welcome. However, the call is by no means limited to historians of France or Germany.

Occupied Societies in Western Europe: Conflict and Encounter in the 20th Century
The history of Western Europe in the first half of the 20th Century was shaped by numerous contradictions: by conflicts and interdependencies, proximity and distance, violence and co-operation. Many of these elements can be identified in the structures and dynamics of Western European societies under German occupation. After all, the relationship between occupiers and the occupied cannot simply be reduced to "collaboration" and "resistance", in contrast to the suggestions of an older historiography.

All the Beauty of the World. The European Market for non-European Artefacts (18th-20th century)
In the wake of the Western expansion, a fast growing number of non-European artefacts entered the European market. They initially made their way into princely cabinets of curiosities. Enabled by the forced opening and exploitation of more and more parts of the world and pushed by social and technological changes of the time, the 18th century brought a boom of the market of non-European artefacts in Europe. This came along with the emergence of a broader collecting culture and the development of a rich museumscape. This market and its development in terms of methods and places of exchange and monetary and ideological value of the objects are in the focus of an international symposium that will take place in October 2016 in Berlin.

Human procreation and family planning and the challenge of the evolution in values in the 20th century
Aidé par les progrès technologiques et médicaux accomplis au cours du XXe siècle dans le domaine de la contraception, de l’avortement, de la stérilisation et de l’aide médicale à la procréation, l’homme (et, de plus en plus, la femme) des sociétés occidentales s’est progressivement approprié la maîtrise de sa fécondité. Cependant, cette appropriation ne s’est pas déroulée sans heurts. Ainsi, la question de savoir par qui, quand, en quel nombre, dans quelles conditions, dans quel but mettre des enfants au monde, et même si on devrait le faire, a fait l’objet de réflexions individuelles et de conflits sociaux et a pu recevoir, au cours des décennies, des réponses fort différentes.
