Atelier 1 : Faire dialoguer les arts

Ce premier atelier du programme de recherche « Américanisation par les arts ? France – États‑Unis. Échanges et appropriations (1850-2020) » abordera la question des échanges et des appropriations culturelles entre la France et les États-Unis, de manière interdisciplinaire, pour en cerner les effets et les modes opératoires sur l’univers sensible tant des Français que des Nord-Américains à partir de quatre portes d’entrée : le corps (manières de se comporter, place accordée au corps dans la vie quotidienne), la voix (manières de parler, de chanter, vocalités, environnement sonore radiophonique et télévisuel), la langue (manières d’écrire et de penser, représentations), les formes (influence des arts savants et populaires dans l’environnement sonore et visuel quotidien).

Music and Late Medieval European Court Cultures

Late medieval European court cultures have traditionally been studied from a mono-disciplinary and national(ist) perspective. This has obscured much of the interplay of cultural performances that informed “courtly life”. Recent work by medievalists has routinely challenged this, but disciplinary boundaries remain strong. The MALMECC project therefore has been exploring late medieval court cultures and the role of sounds and music in courtly life across Europe in a transdisciplinary, team-based approach that brings together art history, general history, literary history, and music history. Team members explore the potential of transdisciplinary work by focusing on discrete subprojects within the chronological boundaries 1280-1450 linked to each other through shared research axes, e.g., the social condition of ecclesiastic(s at) courts, the transgenerational and transdynastic networks generated by genetic lineage and marriage, the performativity of courtly artefacts and physical as well as social spaces, and the social, linguistic and geographic mobility of court(ier)s.

The British, American and French Photobook: Commitment, Memory, Materiality and the Art Market (1900-2019)

The Maison Française conference committee invites proposals on the social history of the British, American or French photobook from 1900 to the present. Papers will address: commitment or explicit political engagement; memory, commemoration and the writing of history; materiality (whether real or virtual), and how material form affects circulation, handling, critical responses and the social life of the photobook. We invite contributors to analyse these topics with respect to the growth of the market for the photobook as a commodity and an object of bibliophilic attention. Proposals focusing on contemporary productions are particularly welcome.

TaPRA Theatre, Performance and Philosophy Research Event

In On Being Included, Sara Ahmed argues that institutional commitments to diversity may be considered “non-performatives”: they do not bring about what they name. Institutions run diversity workshops and committees, outreach programmes and ‘participatory’ or ‘inclusive’ agendas, but where does the gesture stop, and where does it begin? How may we understand the choreography and the dramaturgy of institutional outreaching? How can we begin to detour this language so as to rethink the role of the university – and of artistic practice – in public life today? Does the university have a role to play in public life, and what might that be? Does this equate with ‘outreach’? What is the relationship between artistic practice and what may be termed ‘creative research’?

We wish to focus on how certain forms of the “empire”, the “colony”, and the “outside” mutually constituted each other. Such an approach, we believe, could illumine the dense transnational convergences that shape the political, the economic, the social, and the cultural in various locations simultaneously.

Musique, nationalisme et transnationalisme : diplomatie, politique, esthétique

Ce colloque constitue la deuxième étape du programme de recherche « Musique et nation dans l’entre-deux-guerres - Europe-Amériques ». Il fait suite à la journée d’études « Musique et nation dans l’entre-deux-guerres » qui s’est tenue le 10 décembre 2015 à Paris. Y sera développée une réflexion sur la mobilisation de la musique par des acteurs publics ou privés dans des contextes locaux, nationaux et internationaux. Trois axes seront privilégiés : les usages de la musique dans la diplomatie culturelle ; la musique dans les commémorations et les répertoires à dimension commémorative et la place des imaginaires nationaux et nationalistes dans le discours sur la musique.

Manifester : formes et aspects des phénomènes de protestation dans les arts et les cultures françaises et francophones

Journée des doctorants de la Society for French Studies 2016

Propre à l’activité humaine, la manifestation comme forme de protestation permet aux individus d’exprimer leur mécontentement vis-à-vis des structures sociales et des hiérarchies de pouvoir hégémoniques existantes. Les formes de manifestations varient selon les contextes et périodes, allant de l’expression du mécontentement personnel aux appels aux changements révolutionnaires. L’acte de manifester peut donc être individuel ou collectif, personnel ou politique, spontané ou organisé, mais il est presque toujours orienté vers la déstabilisation du statu quo et vise souvent à proposer de nouvelles façons d’exister. À travers l’histoire, les manifestations, qu’elles soient légales ou non, ont ainsi permis aux peuples de renverser des régimes autoritaires, exposer et confronter des déséquilibres de pouvoir, ou encore d’améliorer les conditions de vie des individus privés de droits sociaux.

San-Antonio international : représentations, circulation, traductions, échanges

L’ampleur et la pérennité du succès de San-Antonio en France restent peu comprises à l’étranger. Malgré un demi-siècle de carrière, plus de 250 livres publiés et des dizaines de millions d’exemplaires vendus, cet auteur, sous ce pseudonyme ou sous le nom de Frédéric Dard demeure très mal connu hors de France, et il est rare de trouver ses livres en librairie hors des pays francophones. Ses romans, tant sous pseudonyme que sous patronyme ont pourtant été largement traduits dans une trentaine de pays. Son œuvre a aussi circulé sous d’autres formes médiatiques, inspirant en particulier de nombreux films distribués internationalement.

L’histoire et les sens

Vingt-huitième colloque annuel de la Society for the Study of French History

De l’école des Annales à la phénoménologie, historiens français et intellectuels ont joué un rôle pionnier dans l’exploration et l’interprétation de l’expérience sensible. Nous invitons cette année les chercheurs à soumettre des propositions de communications ou de panels sur ce thème des sens. Cet appel à communication s’adresse à un large éventail d’historiens, ceux dont le travail concerne les cinq sens mais aussi ceux qui étudient le sens sous d’autres formes : sens de l’espace et du temps, sentiment d’appartenance ou sens de la communauté, voire « sixièmes » sens moins immédiatement évidents et tangibles. Les chercheurs, quelle que soit leur période de prédilection, se sont intéressés aux sens comme à des moyens de reconstruire l’expérience vécue du passé, ou de réfléchir à la nature du témoignage historique ou de l’écriture de l’histoire.

Au-delà de la compétence linguistique dans un monde globalisé: action, interaction et médiation interculturelle

Au croisement du linguistique et de l’éducatif, du social et du politique, le Séminaire doctoral international réunit chaque année des enseignants-chercheurs et de jeunes chercheurs concernés par l’appropriation et la transmission des langues et des cultures. Conçu comme un outil de formation à la recherche, à l’initiative du monde académique, au bénéfice des professionnels impliqués dans la diffusion et l’enseignement des langues, fondé sur l’échange scientifique entre jeunes chercheurs, universitaires et experts confirmés, en présentiel, par un dispositif de visio-conférence ou par une plate-forme d’échange, le Séminaire propose d’engager la réflexion scientifique internationalisée par un programme incitatif comportant des conférences plénières de chercheurs de premier plan issus de champs disciplinaires complémentaires et des ateliers consacrés à la présentation par les jeunes chercheurs de leurs travaux. “Ri yo avan yo riw”: Rebellion and Compliance of Womanhood in African-Diasporic Milieu

As defined by Hirsh, postmemory: “describes the relationship of the second generation of powerful, often traumatic experiences that preceded their births but that were nevertheless transmitted to them so deeply as to seems to constitute memories in their own rights” (2008). Applied to the African Diaspora, one may suggest that slavery and colonialism constitute a postmemory directly determining the approach to self of all members of the African Diaspora. This postmemory is so ingrained in these societies that the post-conflict backlash generally affecting women from former colonised or occupied countries, has hit African-Diasporic women in an extremely unusual way. In fact, it has been witnessed in several middle Eastern or South American societies that after liberationist conflicts, some societies would create a fantasised notion of womanhood allegedly pre-colonial, rejecting the former dominant culture to glorify their own root culture (Al Ali, Pratt 2007; Pankhurst 2007). In African-Diasporic milieu and in the same post conflict context, women were fed with dreams of European respectability of which the European middle class woman was archetypal. This rather complex situation generated great uneasiness as far as identity and womanhood were concerned. Beyond the debate around Négritude, Créolité and even Modernity, black women are yet to fit the general notion of “whut a [black] woman oughta be and to do”.Indeed, One can wonder at the ability of the new generation to fulfil the dream of respectability of its mothers (Burton, 1997) while complying with the demands of an increasingly neo-liberal environment. Coupled with the Festival Image of Black Women, this conference will be the opportunity to discuss the discrepancy between the image, the representation and the realities of African-Diasporic women. The aim is to identify the postmemories responsible for the social expectations of womanhood in a given community and how these expectations protect or injure the same women.

The PoP (Performances of the Popular) Moves committee is now inviting submissions for the 2011 symposium, “Amplifying Movement: New directions in popular dance studies.” This annual gathering will bring together scholars and practitioners whose emphasis is on novel and challenging approaches to the study of popular performances, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary methodologies and their contributions to the growing field of popular dance studies. All areas of interest and themes are welcome. The list below is offered as a means to entertain and encourage combinations that may expand and stimulate conversations containing new configurations, collaborations and directions.
