  Global Congo - the aesthetics and politics of world literature

  Esthétiques et politiques d'une littérature mondiale

  In this symposium, we suggest thinking of the Congo as a literary center. First, for the writers of the diaspora: be they in Brussels, in Graz or in Louisiana, the Congo seems to function as a pole of attraction, both textually and physically. A great number of languages intertwine (Chinese is one of them), and contemporary literature attests this cultural richness. Richard Ali A Mutu, for example, writes in Lingala and is translated into English ; Jean Bofane and Fiston Mujila write in French, but their novels are translated in a dozen languages ; JJ Bola writes in English. How does this linguistic parameter influence their writings? How do the writers consider the European languages and the local languages (Lingala, Ciluba, Swahili) ? Is the choice of a language the consequence of a political commitment, or does it emerge from the observation of the plurilingual character of the Congolese society? Moreover, approaching the Congolese literary space in a World Literature perspective requires us to broaden the very notion of “literature”.

  The conference will take place in Cologne from January 16th to January 18th 2013 and is co-organized by Morphomata Center for Advanced Studies at the University of Cologne. An initial evening lecture will be followed by two days with 3-4 panels each including a comment. The publication of the conference proceedings is foreseen.

  Multilocality: symbolic and material constructions of space in societies of mobile individuals

  Les sociétés à individus mobiles constituent aujourd’hui l’horizon de l’investigation empirique de la géographie. Les problèmes de mobilité et de circulation, la différenciation des capacités à être mobile, les normes sociales autour de la mobilité, le problème de présence / absence, les coordinations spatio-temporelles hyperprécises d’activités, les processus transformateurs d’identités et altérités et la pratique temporaire de lieux géographiques sont quelques uns des problèmes importants de telles configurations sociétales. Trois questions principales peuvent être posées: quelles sont les conditions sociétales de l’habiter poly-topique ? Quelles sont les conséquences du jeu de présence / absence sur les lieux géographiques, individus, familles, entreprises, services publics ? Quelles sont les pratiques de la poly-topicité ?
