To this Thematic Dossier, we suggest to focus on these materials, having in mind the relation between built heritage, knowledge and society. It is proposed a multidisciplinary, wide and diversified approach of the various aspects that influence the patrimonial existence of cities. It aims to explore diversified aspects of mediation between these materials and cultural heritage. Thus, all are invited to present creative and original studies and reflections.

Conservar e Reabilitar monumentos, edifícios e espaços são oportunidades únicas para fomentar a sustentabilidade das cidades. Lisboa será, em 2020, a Capital Verde Europeia, constituindo-se o ENCORE 2020 numa ocasião ímpar para relevar os desafios ambientais da transformação das cidades: poupar recursos, reutilizar materiais, melhorar a eficiência energética, repensar as centralidades urbanas, promover a resiliência. Porque a cidade resiliente deve ser a cidade das pessoas, os monumentos, edifícios e espaço urbano, têm que servir aos seus habitantes e ser atrativas para os seus visitantes. Mais do que relatar problemas, visa-se encontrar e debater caminhos e soluções para questões como: O que se deve preservar? Como atualizar sem destruir? É viável conservar e reabilitar?

Old Tensions, emerging paradoxes in health
European Society for Health and Medical Sociology 17th biennial conference
The positive effect of comprehensive health systems on health outcomes, economic growth and well-being is generally acknowledged, just as of representative policies, scientific-based decisions and trust relationships on social cohesion and respect for political and civil rights in health. Not surprisingly, health policies have become more aligned with the needs of different social groups (e.g. migrants, ethnic minorities, women, LGBT) and of specific medical conditions (e.g. HIV, mental and age-related diseases). Regulators interfere more and more in professional work models and decisions to better control health systems performance and to enhance transparency, but so do empowered citizens in the defence of their rights as patients.

Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

No momento em que se cumprem 40 anos da revolução democrática do 25 de abril de 1974, o país que ela ajudou a transformar vive uma das mais graves crises dos últimos 160 anos. Em 40 anos de democracia, Portugal viveu de forma intensa as grandes transformações da contemporaneidade que mudaram profundamente relações sociais, identidades coletivas, sistema político, que produziram avanços e recuos muito acentuados na transformação da natureza das relações económicas. Poucas sociedades europeias sofreram mudanças tão acentuadas no espaço de uma geração: a emancipação de uma das mais longas ditaduras da história europeia, o fim de uma guerra longa de 13 anos, ou a explosão criativa de democracia vivida há 40 anos abriram o caminho para a mudança socioeconómica e a maturidade política e cultural que, contudo, desde há alguns anos entraram num ciclo depressivo.

Conferência Internacional Cinema – Arte, Tecnologia, Comunicação
A AVANCA | CINEMA vai realizar a 5ª edição em Julho de 2014, reunindo uma vez mais investigadores, académicos, estudantes, realizadores e cinéfilos em Avanca para cinco dias de partilha, tendo como tema central o Cinema. Na última edição da conferência, aconteceram 140 apresentações de 178 participantes de que resultou um livro de comunicações com 1288 páginas. Entre campos de milho, câmaras, projetores e telas, o conhecimento científico em torno do cinema é divulgado entre cerca de 400 participantes do festival e da conferência e dos 18000 espetadores, que chegam dos quatros cantos do mundo. Os autores estão convidados a submeterem trabalhos nos temas abaixo sugeridos (mas não limitados a estes).

The French-speaking world: celebrations, events and effects
Question time
La francophonie n’est certes pas un fait culturel ou politique nouveau. Toutefois – indéchiffrable ou irréductible aux effets de correspondance linguistique au territoire ; qui plus est chargée d’une aura littéraire bien au-delà des francophonies originelles ou postcoloniales –, elle se revêt d’une ambiguïté définitoire, - souvent déclinée au pluriel -, et d’un statut géopolitique en éternel chantier. Quoi qu’il en soit, une chose est sûre : la francophonie se définit surtout par des interrogations ou des négations, tant par rapport au centre hexagonal que vis-à-vis d’une uniformisation linguistique et culturelle hégémonique.
