Conference, symposium - History
The University of Cape Town and the French Institute of South Africa are convening an international conference on the links established between Cuba and several African countries in the 20th century. Military and medical engagements, training and cultural cooperation: the objective of this first meeting is to start measuring the scale of a multifaceted Cuban engagement in Africa. Gathering scholars from three continents and open to the public, the conference will take place at the Institute for Humanties in Africa (HUMA), based at the University of Cape Town, on May the 23rd and the 24th.

En Septembre 2012, la quatrième rencontre « Solidarité africaine avec Cuba » se tenait à l’Union africaine à Addis-Abeba, Ethiopie. 27 pays africains étaient représentés par des ambassadeurs, des professionnels, des associations et des militants, qui ont débattu pendant deux jours avec une délégation cubaine au rythme de phrases telles « Viva Fidel ! », « Cuba estamos contigo ! ». Les délégués discutèrent des luttes communes, des sanctions sur Cuba, du sort des « cinq cubains » retenus aux États-Unis, et du développement conjoint de Cuba et des pays africains. De quoi cette mise en scène de la solidarité est-elle le reflet ? D’un internationalisme cubain qu’on pensait anachronique ? D’un panafricanisme nourri au creuset du marxisme ? D’un développementalisme soutenu par des politiques de collaboration ? De solidarités Sud-Sud renouvelées ? (Adams 1981, Adi 2014, Falk 1987, Gleijeses 1996). Il faudrait pour répondre revenir sur les histoires, les représentations et les pratiques qui ont accompagné, transformé ou influencé les relations entre Cuba et l’Afrique. Cette première rencontre a comme objectif de prendre l’ampleur de ces engagements multiformes entre Cuba et de nombreux pays en Afrique.

French Institute of South Africa Fellowships 2014
PhD / Postdoctorate
One or two doctoral or post-doctoral research position are vacant at the French Institute of South Africa. IFAS is a French Research Institute Overseas (IFRE) under the supervision of the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the CNRS, covering Southern Africa (UMIFRE 25, USR 3336). These posts are financed through non-renewable (save for exceptional reasons) relocation allowances (Aides à la Mobilité) for a maximum of nine months. Successful applicants will receive the scientific and logistic support of IFAS and will become involved in the scientific life of the Institute by regularly taking part in the ongoing activities (conferences, seminars, conferences, publications, etc.). The relocation allowance comes to €1 200 net per month and, in addition, includes one Paris/Johannesburg/Paris trip which will be refunded on the basis of the price of an economic class air ticket, and medical cover. Nationality will not be a condition for application. Applicants will be selected on the basis of scientific criteria only, although the integration potential of the project into the academic landscape of Southern Africa will be taken into consideration. Priority will be given to applicants whose research is in line with the research programmes of the Institute.

The language of the conference will be English, but we might organize sessions in French provided we have enough proposals in this language. -

The event will consist of a two day colloquium, organized at the University of Witwaterstrand (Wits) and University of Johannesburg (UJ); one day of site visits to some of emblematic neighbourhoods of Johannesburg as far as the subject of urban memory in South Africa is concerned. It is anticipated that the academic fields represented will range from urban history, geography, anthropology, heritage studies and urban sociology. The intention is to go beyond the frame of "African studies" and to connect experiments and reflections from all corners of what is now a global issue. -
