  Gendering Humanitarian Knowledge

  Global Histories of Compassion from the Mid-Nineteenth Century to the Present

  The conference invites scholars to think about the notion of "humanitarian knowledge" in a multidisciplinary way, by combining perspectives such as gender history, the histories ofemotions and the body, literary and visual culture studies, global health history, as well as the history of institutions and their agents. All of them are useful to explore the transnational networks through which humanitarian practices and ideas have been promoted, disseminated and standardised.The conference brings together scholars interested in working on the history of humanitarian knowledge from a gender perspective. The interventions deal with stories of flesh and blood, which put women’s and men’s humanitarian experiences at their centre, in order to inscribe their local practices within a global history of compassion from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

  Le cycle de conférences en études genre, organisé par l'Institut des études genre de l'université de Genève, ont l’ambition d’attirer l’attention d’un large public sur l’intérêt de l’approche de genre pour traiter différentes questions, qui sont autant des sujets de recherche que des problèmes de société. Elles font appel à des spécialistes reconnu·e·s qui travaillent dans une perspective internationale.

  L'homo academicus a-t-il un sexe ?

  L'excellence scientifique en questions

  L’ « excellence » est devenue le leitmotiv des transformations contemporaines du monde universitaire. Cette injonction normative incite les chercheur-e-s et les enseignant-e-s à ajuster leur pratique du travail scientifique à des critères de performance standardisés et unifiés, censés permettre une comparaison des établissements universitaires comme des chercheur-e-s dans une logique de compétition internationale. Lorsque c’est aux femmes universitaires qu’elle s’adresse en particulier, cette même injonction implique de surcroît un alignement des parcours académiques de ces dernières sur un modèle de carrière qui avait été pensé par et pour des hommes.
