  Urban change and memory: New perspectives on Europe and beyond

  Cities are crucial spaces for the negotiation of a contested past. This summer seminar explores the making of memory in European cities. It aims to: discuss perspectives and methods of memory studies and urban studies; examine some of the main threads of urban change in Europe and beyond, delve into the heart of memorial controversies by focusing on dynamics in specific urban situations; highlight practices of invited curators, artists, and other professionals. Lectures and discussions will be conducted in English.

  (Re)thinking the world

  Borders and memoirs about teacher training in Europe4

  Soixante aprés la signature du traité de Rome, l'Union européenne est confrontée à de nouveaux défis : accroissement des migrations à grandes échelles, montée des partis ultra-nationalistes et eurosceptiques et crainte des attaques terroristes. Face à ces enjeux,les reponses politiques européennes ou étatiques semblent marquées par le repli et l'exclusion. À l'aune de cette crise, il est à craindre que les valeurs européennes de tolérance, de démocratie et d'humanisme soient en danger de disparition. Dans ce contexte, il apparaît nécessaire de convoquer le rôle de l'éducation et notamment de la formation des enseignants dans cette évolution et notamment dans la perception des frontières qu'elles soient physique ou mentales.

  Being free, doing free – freedom between theoretical and practical philosophy

  Junior Conference for Graduate Students

  If today, freedom can be conceived as a physiological property of human being, such conception trivializes the history of freedom as a philosophical concept. Throughout the history of philosophy, freedom has always been discussed in much larger contexts: If, for example, freedom consists in acting freely in causally determined nature, a conception of human freedom arises only from metaphysical presupposition. The same holds true for an understanding of human freedom as something realizing itself in history, as something that is only possible through grace, or as something that must be won against dominant interpretations of self and world. The concept of freedom is thus not only a topic in practical and theoretical philosophy, but can be understood as a connection of both–and be it in a tension between the two. We are calling for contributions both in the history of philosophy and in a systematic approach to the topic.

Pratique et sémantique de l’amitié et du patronage dans une perspective historique, anthropologique et interculturelle”de l’Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, financé par la „Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft“, propose pour la période du 1er Novembre 2007 au 29 Février 2008 et du 1er Mai 2008 au 31 juillet 2008 une bourse de recherche (Visiting Fellowship) pour chaque période destinée à des chercheurs invités.
