  Governance of the Universal Church after the Council of Trent – Two PhD positions - Max Planck Research Group

  The Max Planck Research Group III investigates the emergence and development of the system of post-Tridentine global governance of the Catholic Church in depth from an interdisciplinary perspective over an extended period of time. It will do so by analysing the activity of the Congregations of the Council, the dicastery responsible for appropriately implementing the Council decisions in the entire Catholic world.  We are now looking to recruit as soon as possible (but no later than 1 April 2019) two doctoral students who will develop a doctoral thesis preferably focused on the history of the Congregation of the Council in the early modern period (XVI-XVIII century).

  Work and family in an order-based society

  Intercultural dialogue and interdisciplinary perspectives

  L’atelier a pour objectif de proposer à des jeunes chercheurs français et allemands spécialisés en histoire et en histoire du droit un forum de discussion durant lequel ils pourront engager un dialogue interdisciplinaire et présenter leurs recherches sur les relations, les influences réciproques et les courants contraires entre les notions de travail et de famille du Moyen Âge central à la fin de l’époque moderne (vers 1100-1815). Ses trois angles d’approche - le phénomène de négociation des normes, les inégalités dans le travail, et l’influence du contexte politique, culturel et socio-économique - permettront aux participants d’investir le thème peu exploré des relations entre travail et famille dans le cadre d’une diversité sociale et culturelle.

  Practices of critique

  International Graduate Conference

  Practices of critique are intertwined with normative orders in manifold ways. They contain and refer reflexively to critical contentions, and they can enable as well as suppress critique. In this context it is essential to reconstruct the theoretical foundations of critique and power structures as well the practices in which they are instantiated. Three aspects are crucial: firstly concrete forms of power and their application, which always emerge from a tension between normative claims and solidified systems of rule; secondly the purview of justice as the foundation for critical rationale; thirdly the aspect of aesthetic representation. Such themes shall be addressed from multidisciplinary perspectives at the international graduate conference “Practices of Critique” on 5-7 December 2013.

  Paternity at the end of the Middle Ages and early Modern period, 14th-16th century: forms and reforms?

  Die Vaterschaft im Spätmittelalter und in der Frühen Neuzeit (14.-16. Jahrhundert): Formen, Reformen?

  Cette journée d’études portera sur l’histoire de la paternité en Allemagne, en Suisse et en Italie entre le XIV^e siècle et le XVI^e siècle, et sur l’articulation possible entre l’évolution des formes de la paternité et les réformes du temps. En partant de l’étude de sources variées (textes littéraires, livres de famille, images, textes doctrinaux, testaments, etc.) émanant de milieux divers (clercs, patriciens, marchands, lettrés, etc.), on proposera de s’interroger sur la redéfinition des droits et des devoirs des pères, sur les formes de la transmission, sur les mots et les images de la paternité, comme sur les représentations de la masculinité et de la féminité que ces formes de la paternité mettent en jeu.

  Ce colloque se situe à l’intersection de l’histoire économique et de l’histoire du droit ou des institutions, et est centré sur les pratiques et les attentes des acteurs de l’économie. En d’autres termes, il s’agit ici de partir des acteurs pour comprendre les raisons qui les motivent à demander l’octroi de privilèges, la manière dont celui-ci s’insère dans leurs pratiques. Il se tiendra à Francfort-sur-le-Main du 30 juin au 2 juillet 2010.
