The international conference Breaking Boundaries: Academia, Activism and the Arts proposes to bring into focus and critically question common grounds and boundaries between and within the Humanities, political activity and aesthetic production.At a time when boundaries are simultaneously questioned and reinforced – for example between geographical territories, political states, public and private spheres, gendered bodies, creative media, theory and practice, local and global, human, non-human and post-human – the question of what such frontiers stand for, and how and why they might be transgressed offers itself for and, indeed, urges discussion.

Insularities and enclaves in colonial and post-colonial circumstances

Crossings, conflicts and identitarian constructions (15th - 21st centuries)

Historically, archipelagos were considered as rehearsal spaces for new social constructions. Since colonization and, afterwards, colonialism and imperialism, many of them evolved in association with the strengthening of international networks, while others did not escape isolation and forced unequal integration in different spaces. On the other hand, enclaves were the outcome of historical circumstances, often externally decided, which prompted some degree of insularity regarding the immediate geographical surroundings. When those territories did not become independent, there were demands for autonomy or, at least, some underlying emancipatory and anti-colonialist feelings. Even when these feelings did not mobilize relevant segments of the population, they disclose the alterity – above all cultural – in regard to sovereignty.

Alimentação, saúde e ambiente: sustentabilidade e desafios

Este seminário marca o início da agenda científica do Grupo de Trabalho Transições Tecnológicas: Memórias, Saberes e Práticas, constituído no âmbito do Colégio F3. A articulação entre alimentação, saúde e ambiente expressa, de forma inequívoca, a base em que assenta a relação milenar homem / natureza. Privilegiando uma abordagem multidisciplinar, este encontro pretende ser um fórum de discussão em torno das questões básicas do quotidiano das comunidades humanas, em especial as que respeitam à alimentação e à saúde e bem-estar na sua relação com o ambiente, considerando, por um lado, uma perspetiva de análise histórica que contemple diversidades geográficas, culturais e tecnológicas e, por outro, os desafios atuais face à globalização, à escassez de recursos, à sua sobre-exploração e às inovações tecnológicas para superar as dificuldades e / ou as consequências negativas dessa exploração.

Queering Friendship | citizenship, care and choice

Intimate Final Conference

Contrary to individualization theories that suggest the impoverishment of human relationships, theories of relationality recognize the increasing centrality of informal networks of solidarity and care. In this debate, friendship plays a fundamental role. The mutual implications of intimacy and citizenship need to be addressed, exploring the extent to which issues of LGBTQ friendship matter (or not) in being recognized as citizens. The centrality of friendship is even more striking when considering personal lives of trans and non-binary people, but also lesbian women, gay men and bisexual people, LGBTQ migrants and other intersecting, vulnerable groups. In particular, the way transgender people actively provide and receive different care between friends offers invaluable contributions to political debates and conceptual discussions around friendship and care as a key aspect of LGBTQ everyday life. Unveiling the richness of the blurred spaces of intimacy, the ways in which LGBTQ people produce alternatives to family-based forms of cohabitation are also of critical importance. LGBTQ lived experiences further contribute to destabilizing the family/friends and public/private binaries, whilst challenging heterocisnormative expectations about who legitimately belongs to the intimate sphere and who remains excluded and/or invisible.

O Centro de história da universidade de Lisboa, juntamente com a universidade do Porto, Ashkelon Academic College e o Dahan Center da Bar-Ilan University estão a organizar um congresso internacional, a decorrer em 2018 (27 de Junho a 2 de Julho), na universidade de Lisboa e na universidade do Porto, dedicado ao tema dos Judeus em Portugal e a diáspora luso-espanhola. Está de momento aberta a chamada à participação de todos os investigadores, especialistas e académicos, que desejem apresentar os seus trabalhos e resultados neste evento.

Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

The Call for Papers is now open for the International Conference: Practising the Good Life/The Good Life in Practices, to be held at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Lisbon, Portugal) on October 17th/18th 2013. This will be the first conference in Portugal solely dedicated to Lifestyle Mobilities. The conference is free of charge, but is limited to a maximum of 24 paper presentations, to be delivered in plenary sessions over two days.

Em particular nas últimas duas décadas, alguns sectores do mercado de trabalho nacional têm acompanhado mudanças globais de consolidação da debilidade dos vínculos de trabalho que enquadram a larga maioria dos protagonistas destes sectores e que se têm traduzido numa presença crescente de imigrantes. O serviço doméstico e a prestação de cuidados são um desses espaços onde dinâmicas sociais, políticas e económicas se cruzam para dar forma a um contexto caracterizado por uma forte vulnerabilidade e precariedade dos laços laborais, em larga medida também explicado pelos traços que definem a condição genérica do imigrante económico.

Conviviality & superdiversity at local level

Our principal aim is to describe, analyze and compare new super-diverse convivial contexts, as they relate to the process of migrations shaping new cultural realms. Our approach does not involve the idealization of harmonic intercultural relations but considers convivial contexts as new fields of intercultural tensions and interactions as an attempt to understand their dynamics and the social, historic and personal factors that lead to willingness to coexist with ethnic heterogeneity or to reject it. Consequently, it envisions applying an innovative framework to understanding intercultural relations among national and migrant populations. From the perspective of social topography, the new convivial cultures are not associated with a specific geographic space. They correspond to different public contexts in which people with links to various ethnic or cultural groups interact.

A Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (FCG) e o Alto Comissariado para a Imigração e Diálogo Intercultural (ACIDI, IP) promovem a apresentação nacional dos resultados do projeto europeu Immigrant Citizens Survey: assessing needs, evaluating policies and improving capacities, no dia 25 de Maio de 2012, entre as 14:30 e as 19:00, no auditório 3 da FCG. Tal como em iniciativas anteriores conjuntas do ACIDI e da FCG, neste seminário procurar-se-á estimular mais debate e diálogo entre os investigadores/autores, decisores políticos, representantes da sociedade civil e de associações de imigrantes, comentadores e audiência.

A presente conferência organizada pelo Instituto de História Contemporânea (FCSH-UNL) pretende identificar e comparar os vários modelos de representações associados aos movimentos migratórios e aos diferentes tipos de agentes intervenientes nos processos da diáspora moderna. Procura-se também responder a distintas questões: como é que a história das migrações e as narrativas dos migrantes são colectivamente reconstruídas ao longo do tempo nas memórias nacionais dos países de acolhimento e de origem? De que forma é que os migrantes vão ser evocados nas exposições dos museus dedicados à emigração e nos monumentos erguidos em seu nome? Que representações sobre a emigração e imigração são fixadas pela produção literária e cinematográfica?
