International Seminar on Environment and Society
Current challenges and pathways to change
The Environment and Society Section of the Portuguese Association of Sociology, in collaboration with the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon, and the PhD program in Climate Change and Sustainable Development Policies, organizes its first International Seminar, under the motto: Current Challenges and Pathways to Change.

In the Atlantic World, 1400-1900
Since April 2015, the international team working on the project “African Ivories in the Atlantic World: a reassessment of Luso-African ivories” (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia: PTDC/EPH-PAT/1810/2014), composed of 27 researchers from the University of Lisbon, the University of Évora and the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, has been researching the trade, circulation and production of raw and carved African ivory in the Atlantic area from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The team has identified and listed objects from Portuguese and Brazilian (Minas Gerais) collections, also collecting references and descriptions extant in written Portuguese sources. For the first time a selection of ivory pieces was subjected to lab tests with a view to helping establish their age and origin. The project research team has submitted proposals for re-interpreting material culture in the framework of its African contexts of production.

Alimentação, saúde e ambiente: sustentabilidade e desafios
Este seminário marca o início da agenda científica do Grupo de Trabalho Transições Tecnológicas: Memórias, Saberes e Práticas, constituído no âmbito do Colégio F3. A articulação entre alimentação, saúde e ambiente expressa, de forma inequívoca, a base em que assenta a relação milenar homem / natureza. Privilegiando uma abordagem multidisciplinar, este encontro pretende ser um fórum de discussão em torno das questões básicas do quotidiano das comunidades humanas, em especial as que respeitam à alimentação e à saúde e bem-estar na sua relação com o ambiente, considerando, por um lado, uma perspetiva de análise histórica que contemple diversidades geográficas, culturais e tecnológicas e, por outro, os desafios atuais face à globalização, à escassez de recursos, à sua sobre-exploração e às inovações tecnológicas para superar as dificuldades e / ou as consequências negativas dessa exploração.

The Center of History of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and the Institute of Contemporary History of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University of Lisbon, are pleased to be hosting the II meeting of REPORT(H)A - Portuguese Network of Environmental History, in 2017 Spring. The cross cutting conference theme, Environmental Changes in Historical Perspective, is inscribed in transnational and transdisciplinary approaches, a challenge to the current academic research and debate in environmental sciences and humanities.

The study and design of landscape as a methodological problem
First Iberian Colloquium on Landscape
Landscapes present themselves as sceneries we have inherited, where we live, and from where we draw the resources needed to subsist as a civilisation and as a species. The result of our actions on this heritage will be the legacy to our descendants. In the beginning of the third millennium, the interest in the topic of landscape is increasingly important, transforming this discipline in a research platform where several fields of knowledge intersect. The aim of this colloquium is to reflect about the diversity of multidisciplinary aspects, analytical methods, and intervention techniques related to the study of landscape, establishing a forum focused on the future relationship between humanity and landscape.

Existirão limites éticos nas práticas dos antropólogos? Reconhecem-se áreas de actuação e intervenção distintas assim como contextos interdisciplinares que, cada vez mais, marcam as experiências dos antropólogos. Muitos deles, ou quase sempre, são arenas políticas onde se confrontam saberes competitivos, num mundo que não é só de indivíduos humanos, de vivos, do aqui e do agora.

No ano em que se comemoram os 40 anos da Revolução de Abril, o 3º Ciclo de Conferências LISBOA XXI sob o título “Abril e Lisboa”, inserido na unidade curricular “Lisboa: rupturas e continuidades”, leccionada e coordenada pela Professora Paula André no Mestrado Integrado em Arquitectura da Escola de Tecnologias e Arquitectura do ISCTE-IUL, tem como principal objectivo reflectir sobre as liberdades vivas e alertar para as liberdades ausentes. Para o realizar foram convidados especialistas das áreas da literatura e do jornalismo, da arquitectura e da antropologia. As apresentações serão realizadas por Armando Baptista-Bastos, Miguel Baptista-Bastos e Ricardo Campos.

EAUH 2014, Session 12
The session "City Lights" is organized within the framework of the 12th international conference of the EAUH (European Association for Urban History) which will take place in Lisbon from the 3rd to the 6th September 2014. It is part of the studies on night, a dimension which has been long neglected in urban history. The session proposes to study in a comparative and multidisciplinary perspective (in history, geography, planning, sociology and environmental studies) the evolution of night-time and street-lighting practices in the world from the XVIIth century up to the present: from the increasing demand in public lighting in european capitals to the protection of the night sky and energy savings.

Vozes transmontanas na paisagem
A ligação entre território e literatura é o tema deste encontro, que terá como eixos de análise as paisagens representadas nas obras de Manuel Vaz de Carvalho, Bento da Cruz e A.M. Pires Cabral e as temáticas regionais e ambientais por elas suscitadas. Partindo de depoimentos dos escritores e de conterrâneos, de imagens recolhidas nas magníficas paisagens transmontanas – em Vila Real, Macedo de Cavaleiros e Montalegre – e dos textos literários, esta iniciativa enquadrada pelos projectos LITESCAPE.PT – Atlas das Paisagens Literárias de Portugal Continental e Memoriamedia, propõe-se valorizar a paisagem e as experiências da paisagem enquanto processos de transformação dos elementos naturais e culturais. -
