Breaking boundaries: academia, activism and the arts

The international conference Breaking Boundaries: Academia, Activism and the Arts proposes to bring into focus and critically question common grounds and boundaries between and within the Humanities, political activity and aesthetic production.At a time when boundaries are simultaneously questioned and reinforced – for example between geographical territories, political states, public and private spheres, gendered bodies, creative media, theory and practice, local and global, human, non-human and post-human – the question of what such frontiers stand for, and how and why they might be transgressed offers itself for and, indeed, urges discussion.

The Bicentenary of the 1820 Revolution presents both an opportunity and a challenge to revisit and better understand a crucial period in contemporary Portuguese history. The international congress marking this event is designed to indicate the main lines of interpretation that are to be found in the abundant historiography currently existing on this subject, as well as to encourage the presentation of new approaches and perspectives of analysis.

Amílcar Cabral: The “Anonymous Fighter” for the Mankind Fundamental Freedoms

In 1971, Amílcar Cabral presented himself in the United Nations (UN) as an “anonymous fighter” engaged in the struggle for the fundamental freedoms of the populations of Guinea and Cape Verde, as well as of all mankind. Such affirmation was not casual, since Cabral adopted the status of “anonymous fighter” in other circumstances, arguing that he was struggling for the human dignity, progress and happiness. The main goal of the conference is to bring together academics studying Cabral trajectory, institutions involved in preserving his memory and personalities which became acquainted with him.

Resistance and Empire, new approaches and comparisons

Since the early twentieth century, the notion of resistance became common currency in colonial language and anti-colonial ideologies to refer to military, political, and other forms of countering the authority of the colonizing institutions and agents in the colonies. After World War II and the boom of decolonization, it became an important tool in the critical and conceptual analysis of colonialism as a relationship of domination and opposition. Consequently, a wealth of studies was produced that focused on the ways though which indigenous people actively opposed, rebelled, or contested – militarily, politically, symbolically, culturally – the colonizing presence of Europeans. In the 1990s-2000s the validity of taking on “resistance” as a privileged concept and empirical topic was criticized for reducing the colonial phenomenon to a simplistic dichotomy – and since it appeared to have lost much of its early vitality in historical and anthropological research on empires and colonialism. Yet, since decolonization, ideas of “liberation” and anti-colonial resistance did not lose their significance as powerful tropes in retrospective nationalist readings of the birth of post- colonial nation-states. More recently, across the social sciences, “resistance” as a concept and a research trope seems to be revived, and a trans-disciplinary field of ‘resistance studies’ appears to come into emergence. What it means to study “resistance” both conceptually and comparatively in colonial and imperial history today?

Os perigos são múltiplos e cada um mais explosivo do que o outro: nacionalismos exacerbados, fanatismo religioso, crise económica, insegurança, demagogia, falta de confiança nos dirigentes políticos, dentre muitos outros aspetos; enfim, um quadro ameaçador dos valores em que se fundamenta a civilização ocidental. A Revista Comunicação e Cultura convida a refletir sobre os fatores estéticos, sociais, políticos e económicos que constituem o quadro conceptual no alvor do fenómeno bélico e sobre o seu impacto na tessitura cultural, na organização da subjetividade, na formação da esfera pública e na qualidade da cidadania veiculada pelos media.

Fórum de investigadores em contextos islâmicos

Num momento em que a deslocalização do Islão é frequentemente vista como ameaça, não é ainda tarde para rever os lados positivos de uma abordagem etnográfica comparativista que o recoloque em diferentes lugares e contextos. Desprezando qualquer postura essencialista que possa rondar uma congregação de estudos sobre o Islão, este núcleo propõe, ao contrário, desenvolver, acompanhar e divulgar diferentes áreas de investigação em contextos em que o Islão está presente de formas diferenciadas. A ideia é da que este esforço comparativo possa servir a descolonização conceptual que tende a invadir trabalhos activados pela urgência política do conhecimento, ou a cristalizar-se noutros demasiado ancorados numa região ou tropo e, por isso, também ameaçados de novos tipos de essencialismo e de reclassificação do Islão.

Vozes da Revolução. Guerra Colonial e Descolonização

Dando continuidade ao Colóquio quio Vozes da Revolução (2009), a Associação 25 de Abril, o Centro des Estudos de História Contemporânea Portuguesa (CEHCP-ISCTE-IUL), o Centro em Rede de Investigação em Anthropolgia (CRIA) e o Instituto de História Contemporânea (IHC-FCSH-UNL), propoem-se lançar nova luz sobre a Revolução portuguesa organizando um colóquio sobre a guerra colonial e o processo de descolonização, dois temas indissociavelmente ligados pois, como salienta Pedro Pezarat Correia, a descolinização não se limita auma mera «mudança de soberania» mas, antes pelo contrário, «um fenómeno muito mais longo e complexo» que se inicia no próprio periodo colonial, que é necessário chamr à colação para um melhor entendimento da «globalidade do percurso».
