Breaking boundaries: academia, activism and the arts
The international conference Breaking Boundaries: Academia, Activism and the Arts proposes to bring into focus and critically question common grounds and boundaries between and within the Humanities, political activity and aesthetic production.At a time when boundaries are simultaneously questioned and reinforced – for example between geographical territories, political states, public and private spheres, gendered bodies, creative media, theory and practice, local and global, human, non-human and post-human – the question of what such frontiers stand for, and how and why they might be transgressed offers itself for and, indeed, urges discussion.

Queering Friendship | citizenship, care and choice
Intimate Final Conference
Contrary to individualization theories that suggest the impoverishment of human relationships, theories of relationality recognize the increasing centrality of informal networks of solidarity and care. In this debate, friendship plays a fundamental role. The mutual implications of intimacy and citizenship need to be addressed, exploring the extent to which issues of LGBTQ friendship matter (or not) in being recognized as citizens. The centrality of friendship is even more striking when considering personal lives of trans and non-binary people, but also lesbian women, gay men and bisexual people, LGBTQ migrants and other intersecting, vulnerable groups. In particular, the way transgender people actively provide and receive different care between friends offers invaluable contributions to political debates and conceptual discussions around friendship and care as a key aspect of LGBTQ everyday life. Unveiling the richness of the blurred spaces of intimacy, the ways in which LGBTQ people produce alternatives to family-based forms of cohabitation are also of critical importance. LGBTQ lived experiences further contribute to destabilizing the family/friends and public/private binaries, whilst challenging heterocisnormative expectations about who legitimately belongs to the intimate sphere and who remains excluded and/or invisible.

International Conference
Many African countries experience a context in which society is constantly faced against the State or private corporations. In this situation, civil society organizations become key players into continent’s political chessboard. Acting in various fields and often seeking non-traditional forms of organization, they pose new challenges to their analysis and interpretation. To meet these defiances, the Centro de Estudos Internacionais of the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (CEI-IUL) promote between 12th and 13th January 2017, the International Conference Activisms in Africa, which will discuss the new profiles of social activism in Africa and the perspectives of change they bring.

Penetrable / Traversable / Habitable
Exploring spatial environments by women artists in the 1960s and 1970s
This conference aims to create a forum for discussing, in a cross-cultural perspective, spatial environments realized by women artists in the 1960s and 1970s. The heterogeneous qualities of these environments, their very diverse functioning, different aesthetic as well as cultural and political inscriptions, suggest the need to expand and rethink Pérez-Oramas´ distinction. In this sense and in the context of feminist art historical scholarship this conference seeks to encourage the articulation of new exploratory categories potentially capable of apprehending the works´ singularities as well as questioning the common threads that could connect them to other practices.

Knowledge for Open and Inclusive Societies
Inter-university Programme en Sociology
The vision of the PhD programme is framed in its title: “Sociology: knowledge for open and inclusive societies” (OpenSoc). We depart from a main strategic assumption: the relevance of the knowledge produced by social sciences (particularly sociology) for understanding and intervening in contemporary reflexive societies. Understanding implies the critique of common sense and taken for granted “prenotions”, as well as the construction of adequate theory and concepts that foster a coherent framework to interpret reality, which is then methodologically put to proof and validated in empirical settings. Fundamental knowledge is to be nurtured by itself; but it also enhances the capacity of translating theory into informed and targetted social action and intervention. Societies need sociology. And sociology feeds society.

Género e pluralismo terapêutico. Acesso das mulheres ao sector de saúde privado em África
Que estratégias adotam os grupos mais desprovidos em situações de risco e crise? Como gerem as mulheres as suas trajetórias pelo mercado de cuidados de saúde? Onde não existe proteção social, quais os intervenientes no campo do apoio e cuidados de saúde? Da diversidade terapêutica à saúde reprodutiva e aos novos intervenientes no apoio social, esta conferência aborda o acesso das mulheres aos cuidados de saúde privados em África, considerando-as o grupo populacional mais sensível às decisões macro-económicas internacionais que conduziram ao desenvolvimento do sector privado nos países dependentes da ajuda externa. -

"Quem me tocou?" O corpo nas teologias feministas
Colóquio internacional de teologias feministas
No meio da multidão, uma mulher toca em Jesus. No meio da multidão, Jesus sente-se tocado por uma mulher e pergunta quem lhe tocou. O presente colóquio pretende trazer para o centro da discussão um facto: as mulheres têm corpo. E o seu corpo, as suas vidas em corpo, lidas, ao longo da história da Igreja e da teologia, como lugar de tentação, são reivindicadas por mulheres como lugar de encontro com o religioso – as teologias feministas têm, pois, corpo. O colóquio abordará esta realidade a partir de diversas perspetivas: embora centrado na teologia, procurará articular este saber com outros saberes. -

Trabalho doméstico e imigração: classe, género e etnicidade no mercado de trabalho
Em particular nas últimas duas décadas, alguns sectores do mercado de trabalho nacional têm acompanhado mudanças globais de consolidação da debilidade dos vínculos de trabalho que enquadram a larga maioria dos protagonistas destes sectores e que se têm traduzido numa presença crescente de imigrantes. O serviço doméstico e a prestação de cuidados são um desses espaços onde dinâmicas sociais, políticas e económicas se cruzam para dar forma a um contexto caracterizado por uma forte vulnerabilidade e precariedade dos laços laborais, em larga medida também explicado pelos traços que definem a condição genérica do imigrante económico. -

As mulheres nas magistraturas em Portugal: percursos, experiências e representações
Nas últimas décadas, uma significativa transformação das profissões jurídicas tem sido a sua crescente feminização. Se, até 1974 a magistratura era uma profissão vedada às mulheres, em 2009 de um total de 1970 juízes nos tribunais de primeira instância, da Relação e no Supremo Tribunal de Justiça, 1040 são mulheres (53%). No Ministério Público (MP), 49,3% do total de magistrados são mulheres, sendo que a percentagem de mulheres magistradas do MP na base da carreira ultrapassa aquele número (61,3%). O peso das mulheres nas magistraturas é visível, desde logo, no Centro de Estudos Judiciários, em que 77,5% dos/as inscrito/as são mulheres. -

The transnational lives, mobility and gender network
As part of the TL network to improve scientific progress in the field of transnational and mobility studies, we are launching the TL Working Paper Series. The aim of this collection is to disseminate scientific advances among colleagues and to the society at large in the field of transnational lives mobility and gender studies. We will include the TL working paper series on our website. Working paper proposals should contain methodological advances or empirical applications about transnational lives and family issues, as well as its economic impact on development. Papers must be genuinely original and unpublished. That is, not having been published or in press in any other journal. -

No seminário internacional cidadania sexual das lésbicas em Portugal e Espanha, organizado pelo Centro de Estudos para as Migrações e Relações Interculturais / Universidade Aberta e pelo Centro de Investigação em Psicologia da Universidade do Minho, serão apresentados e devolvidos à sociedade os resultados do Projeto Cidadania Sexual das Lésbicas em Portugal: experiências de discriminação e possibilidades de mudança (ref: PIHM/GC/0005/2008), financiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia e pela Comissão para a Cidadania e Igualdade de Género. -
