Breaking boundaries: academia, activism and the arts

The international conference Breaking Boundaries: Academia, Activism and the Arts proposes to bring into focus and critically question common grounds and boundaries between and within the Humanities, political activity and aesthetic production.At a time when boundaries are simultaneously questioned and reinforced – for example between geographical territories, political states, public and private spheres, gendered bodies, creative media, theory and practice, local and global, human, non-human and post-human – the question of what such frontiers stand for, and how and why they might be transgressed offers itself for and, indeed, urges discussion.

Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

Imaginar pertenças, repensar identidades

Cartografias, linguagens e narrativas sobre turismo genealógico em espaço Luso-Afro-Brasileiro

Por ano, milhares de pessoas viajam para conhecer ou reencontrar fisicamente lugares imaginados a partir de memórias, estórias e heranças familiares. Numa viagem rumo a destinos distantes que abandonaram, dos quais foram afastados à força, ou onde nunca sequer estiveram, (re)visitam como turistas países, cidades, vilas e bairros em busca de vestígios, nomes de ruas, apelidos, alcunhas, casas e objetos, mas também tradições, cheiros, cores, texturas e sabores. Inspirados por estas mobilidades sensoriais, convidamos a comunidade de investigadores em ciências sociais e humanas a discutir connosco, numa perspetiva pluri e transdisciplinar, o turismo genealógico e o seu papel na (des)construção identitária em espaço Luso-Afro-Brasileiro.

Políticas públicas para o património imaterial na Europa do Sul: percursos, concretizações, perspetivas

Partindo dos esforços desenvolvidos em Portugal, França, Espanha e Itália, o Colóquio tem como objetivo principal a reflexão sobre os processos de desenho de políticas públicas na Europa do Sul para fins da implementação da Convenção para a Salvaguarda do Património Cultural Imaterial (UNESCO, 2003), com especial enfoque sobre a constituição de inventários como medidas fundamentais para a salvaguarda do PCI.

Desvendando o teatro: criatividade, públicos e território

Neste colóquio, Lucien Karpik (Valuing the Unique, 2007, 2011) e Ann Markusen (Creative Placemaking, 2010) dialogam sobre o valor dos mercados singulares, a criatividade, os públicos, mostrando como é que a arte, a cultura e o teatro em particular dão contribuições especiais para o desenvolvimento das economias locais, promovem a competitividade e geram emprego. Juntam-se a esta discussão os investigadores portugueses reconhecidos pelos seus trabalhos na área da cultura, arte, públicos, dinamização cultural, território, e apresentam-se novas linhas de investigação, plataformas colaborativas e de atuação para pesquisas futuras. O debate alarga-se aos decisores políticos, artistas, produtores culturais, jornalistas, todos os investigadores interessados e comunidade em geral.

Trabalho doméstico e imigração: classe, género e etnicidade no mercado de trabalho

Em particular nas últimas duas décadas, alguns sectores do mercado de trabalho nacional têm acompanhado mudanças globais de consolidação da debilidade dos vínculos de trabalho que enquadram a larga maioria dos protagonistas destes sectores e que se têm traduzido numa presença crescente de imigrantes. O serviço doméstico e a prestação de cuidados são um desses espaços onde dinâmicas sociais, políticas e económicas se cruzam para dar forma a um contexto caracterizado por uma forte vulnerabilidade e precariedade dos laços laborais, em larga medida também explicado pelos traços que definem a condição genérica do imigrante económico.

Convivialidade e super-diversidade a nível local

Our principal aim is to describe, analyze and compare new super-diverse convivial contexts, as they relate to the process of migrations shaping new cultural realms. Our approach does not involve the idealization of harmonic intercultural relations but considers convivial contexts as new fields of intercultural tensions and interactions as an attempt to understand their dynamics and the social, historic and personal factors that lead to willingness to coexist with ethnic heterogeneity or to reject it. Consequently, it envisions applying an innovative framework to understanding intercultural relations among national and migrant populations. From the perspective of social topography, the new convivial cultures are not associated with a specific geographic space. They correspond to different public contexts in which people with links to various ethnic or cultural groups interact.

Report from the Pop Line: on the life and afterlife of popular

At the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century, popular culture finds itself at a crossroads: has the concept been drained of its meaning because of its overwhelming popularity? After the euphoria around the popular, what afterlife can be expected from it? Should we still be discussing the popular as opposed to high and folk culture? And where and how do pop art forms intersect with the current notion of the popular? This conference wishes to address the complexities surrounding the debate around the notions of both pop and the popular and discuss the possibilities of their afterlife.

Immigrant citizens survey

A Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (FCG) e o Alto Comissariado para a Imigração e Diálogo Intercultural (ACIDI, IP) promovem a apresentação nacional dos resultados do projeto europeu Immigrant Citizens Survey: assessing needs, evaluating policies and improving capacities, no dia 25 de Maio de 2012, entre as 14:30 e as 19:00, no auditório 3 da FCG. Tal como em iniciativas anteriores conjuntas do ACIDI e da FCG, neste seminário procurar-se-á estimular mais debate e diálogo entre os investigadores/autores, decisores políticos, representantes da sociedade civil e de associações de imigrantes, comentadores e audiência.

This seminar presents and provides a space to discuss the key findings and insights from a Canadian-European comparative study of the integration of culture in community sustainability policy and planning in Canada and Europe. The research built on a critical examination of Canada's "four-pillar" model of community sustainability, which attempts to integrate cultural considerations into overall local planning for sustainability.
