From America to France: Beaumarchais and the experience of Revolution
In 2026, as the United States celebrates 250 years of independence and takes an increasing aggressive stance toward Europe, the Museum of the French Revolution – Domaine de Vizille and the LUHCIE laboratory at Grenoble Alpes University are organizing an international symposium aimed at rethinking the revolutionary origins of Franco-American relations through the figure and writings of Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1732-1799). This reinterpretation has been made possible by the recent acquisition by the Bibliothèque nationale de France of Beaumarchais' voluminous personal archives, as well as by the unprecedented digital publication of his entire surviving correspondence and manuscripts, undertaken as part of the collective and interdisciplinary program @rchibeau (2024-2029).

The French Revolution and the Sacred
Global and Contemporary Perspectives (18th c. – present)
In the years leading up to the bicentenary commemorations of 1989, a new liberal interpretation of the French Revolution challenged a long-lived socialist one. In contrast to the Marxist view of a “bourgeois revolution” with popular support, the liberal historiography has recurrently emphasized the role of “revolutionary ideology” and the “collective mentality” which led to the episode of the “Terror”. We might take the end of Cold War binary frameworks as an opportunity to move beyond this long-lasting interpretive divide, and to reinvestigate how the Revolution transformed ideas of the sacred and has itself been sacralized.

Le Groupe de Coppet au prisme du genre
Numéro 76 des « Cahiers staëliens »
L’objectif de ce numéro des Cahiers staëliens sera d’ouvrir à nouveaux frais le dossier du genre dans le Groupe de Coppet au sens large. On envisagera à ce prisme heuristique ses écrits, fictionnels ou non, privés (correspondance, journaux intimes) comme publics : dans quelle mesure interrogent-ils la différence des sexes en tant que « mode socialement et idéologiquement constituant de l’asymétrie des rapports de sexe » ? On pourra également sonder les rapports sociaux de sexe qui se jouent au sein du Groupe : dans quelle mesure Coppet et la sociabilité qu’il convoque déjouent-ils ou rejouent-ils ces rapports ? Différence des sexes vaut-elle, dans les écrits de ses membres, hiérarchie ? Contester l’une amène-t-il nécessairement à remettre l’autre en question ?

Searching for Homosexuality in Judicial Archives
Epistemological, Methodological and Political Challenges (18 th-20 th centuries)
This workshop aims to explore the epistemological, methodological and political challenges of using judicial archives to conduct historical research on homosexuality. It will be held on 7 and 8 November 2025 at Campus Condorcet in Aubervilliers, France (Paris area). It is open to all early career researchers (master's, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers) conducting investigations into the history of homosexuality using court records and/or other judicial documents, whatever their discipline. This edition focuses specifically on the issue of framing the object of research and on categories of analysis in the history of homosexuality, and how these are put to the test by confrontation with this material.

This special issue of Contemporanea aims to reflect on the mobility of political material culture, analysing how its circulation and transformation, both physical and symbolic in time and space, generated connections between contexts and movements, disseminated and popularised images and imagination, and redefined and influenced political sensibilities and practices during the long 19th century.

La Révolution française : quels espaces et quels environnements pour les femmes ?
Les travaux sur les révoltes alimentaires pendant la Révolution française ont permis de documenter le rôle des femmes, « évidentes émeutières » pour reprendre l’expression d’Arlette Farge. Cependant, leur action ne saurait se limiter à la question du prix du pain. Leur implication dans la préservation et la promotion des « communs » tant urbains que ruraux est aujourd’hui au cœur des préoccupation de l’historiographie. Emeutières mais aussi braconnières, contrebandières, herbières ou colporteuses, les femmes ont contribué à forger une certaine idée de l’environnement construite autour du « droit à la subsistance ». Comment les femmes investissent-elles l’espace, comment le vivent-elles ? Qu’y font-elles ? Comment l’occupent-elles ? autant de questions qu’il s’agit de se poser dans une histoire renouvelée de la Révolution vue d’en bas.

The Culture of Suspicion: Creating Suspects in the Age of Revolutions
The workshop will examine the impact of suspicion in the age of the Atlantic Revolutions (from around 1770 to 1830) in Europe and its colonial territories. We invite contributions that focus on the question of how individuals or groups of people became suspects of hostility towards the existing monarchical or revolutionary order, and thus potentially subversive. Contributions may deal with the narrative construction of suspicion as well as the practical surveillance measures and juridical proceedings that were used against the suspects.

Stay or Leave? Family survival tactics during the age of emigrations
1770-1830s
During the Age of Revolutions (c. 1770-1830), Europe and the Americas were convulsed by a wave of interrelated political upheavals, social protests, slave rebellions, and wars. Republican alternatives to monarchies proliferated, even as colonial wars and abolitionist insurrections shook even the most entrenched empires. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people found themselves displaced and dispersed across the Atlantic world. While some chose to leave out of political or religious principle, others were forced out by some combination of ideological persecution, economic dislocation, and armed conflict. Wherever they ended up, the uprooted were forced to negotiate foreign and often hostile cultures and asylum practices. Drawing together historians and scholars of the literary, visual, and musical arts, this workshop aims to shed light on the least-visible members of these diasporas —women, children and servants— and to develop interdisciplinary perspectives on familial constellations of exile.

Too often confined in the perimeter of military studies, the concept of débâcle discloses a plurality of dramatic, iridescent, vivid meanings. Facing a defeat means participating in a collective trauma, questioning established certainties, redeeming national identity in the face of a moral and political challenge. Rather than reconstructing the episodes of defeat and rebirth in French history, the eighth call for papers of Suite française invites to reflect on the perception of such episodes and their disruptive psychological and political impact. How were débâcle and similar categories such as décadence, trauma, failure, and renascence used by thinkers witnessing the Terror, Sedan, Vichy, and Dien Bien Phu?

Orgues et organistes en France de l’Ancien Régime à la Révolution
Quatorzième rencontre du réseau Muséfrem
La base Muséfrem a permis de repérer de nombreux organistes – hommes et femmes, puisque l’éloignement du chœur de l’instrument à tuyaux, généralement perché sur une tribune, autorise cette fonction musicale aux musiciennes, quel que soit le statut de l’église – au service de cathédrales, de collégiales, de paroisses ou d’établissements réguliers. Grâce à ce corpus, encore incomplet mais déjà imposant, il est possible d’étudier les origines, la formation, les situations professionnelles et familiales de ces instrumentistes particuliers. Cette journée d’étude souhaite croiser les approches historique et musicologique, à travers l’exploration des instruments, des hommes et femmes, et des œuvres, tels qu’ils se révèlent dans les archives, les collections musicales, les catalogues, les périodiques ou le patrimoine organistique conservé.

Expériences, gestion et adaptations (XVIIIe-XXIe siècles)
This conference examines the history of naval war losses from eighteenth through the twenty first centuries, forming the second conference of the Naval War Losses group with the parnership of French Navy Center for Strategic Studies. "Loss" here is broadly defined, but focuses primarly on the loss of human lives, forming its own unit of analysis to understand experiences and administration of, as well as adaptation in, naval warfare. This conference encourages analysis of losses in all forms of naval combat, wether at sea, underwater or above water via naval aviation, in cyberspace or beyond, as well as in amphibious campaign. It also encourages consideration of the role of medecine in preventing or mediating naval losses, alongside consideration of broader socio-technologies that shape the rates., recording, and reporting of naval losses.

Comme chaque année, le comité éditorial de la revue Page 19 éditée par les doctorants du Centre d’histoire du XIXe siècle (université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et Sorbonne Université) propose à de jeunes chercheurs dix-neuviémistes de publier dans la rubrique Varia un article en lien avec leurs recherches. Cet appel à contributions s’adresse notamment aux doctorants en histoire, histoire des arts et littérature, quels que soient leurs domaines géographiques et thèmes de recherche pourvu qu’ils s’inscrivent au moins partiellement dans l’étude d’un siècle qui s’ouvre avec l’« ère des révolutions » et s’achève au lendemain de la première guerre mondiale.

Dramaturges, traductrices, actrices et critiques de théâtre en Europe du XVIIe au XIXe siècle
Les compétences des femmes dans le domaine du théâtre, de la littérature, de la poésie, des essais, des lettres, des brochures pamphlets, des articles de journaux et de la traduction ont joué un rôle significatif dans la culture et la société du XVIIIe siècle en France, selon l’ouvrage de Christie McDonald. Ce colloque se penche sur la contribution intellectuelle des femmes, en mettant particulièrement l’accent sur le théâtre et en comparant les situations du XVIIe au XIXe siècle en Europe.

Space, Gender and Discourse in Women’s Writing (1789-1914)
This conference will explore women writers’ contributions to the representation of Italy in Europe, from the 19th century to the outbreak of the First World War. At a time when women were increasingly present in the public sphere, Italy was for them a source of particular interest and attention, as women writers began to contribute to a discourse that had previously been predominantly restricted to men. Through a cross-cultural and comparative perspective, the conference aims to intersect representations of space and notions of gender, in order to trace the construction and reappropriation of Italy by women authors.

The Child Stage Performer (18th-beginning 19th century)
Journal “European Drama and Performance Studies”
This issue of European Drama and Performance Studies will look at the conditions under which child stage performers operate, in the light of recent research on “working childhood”, on the social history of performers, and on stages and performances that have long been in the shadows (curiosity shows, fairground shows, cultural activities outside European capitals). The aim will be to bring together case studies and also to offer summaries on this theme, with an emphasis on analyses of the 18th century and the early 19th century.
