Artistic Activism in India (History, Practice, Paradigm and Circulation)

“Artivism” encompasses artistic actions, which tackle social and political issues, reviving agitational practises defined in resistance to the planetary ideological hegemony they refer to as neoliberalism. This resurgent awareness of the political nature of artistic creation questions consensual discourses on the neutrality of art and aesthetics, often confined in their "autonomy" and impervious to the disorders of the world. Within artistic activism a dialectic between two entities, traditionally perceived as being of a different nature, is played out: on the one hand the field of art (too often defined as autonomous, with no other functionality than its own) and on the other hand in the field of politics and social activities on the other hand (thought out as a praxis of the exercise of the power in an organized society). The central question posed by artistic activism could be stated in this way: How can we evaluate the capacity of art (visual arts, performing arts, literature, theatre, dance, video art, cinema, etc.) to function as social and political protest?

Les XXI^e ateliers de l'Association des jeunes études indiennes (AJEI) se tiendront à Delhi du 22 eu 25 avril 2019, dans les locaux du Centre des sciences humaines sur le thème de l'intermédiation et du pouvoir. L'AJEI est une association de jeunes chercheur·e·s sur l'Inde, qui depuis plus de 20 ans organise des evènements scientifiques permettant de visibiliser sa recherche, d'en discuter, de la confronter à l'avis de chercheur·e·s seniors. L'appel à contributions ci-dessous donne les axes centraux mais nous restons ouverts à toute contribution recoupant la thèmatique et se basant sur des données empiriques solides.

What do we picture when we evoke India? For its 20 th annual Workshop, The “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) invites young researchers to share their knowledge and to propose a critical approach of the concept of ‘Images’ in the subcontinent: To what extent do images reflect the many realities and representations of India and how does the Indian imagery affect scholarly, artistic and touristic as well as political perceptions, from a western and an Indian point of view? The Workshop is aimed to develop a cross-disciplinary dialogue in social sciences for a better understanding of the multiple roles that Images have been playing from antiquity to nowadays in the perceptions and the foundations of culture and identities in Indian society. The aim is also to open some reflexive discussions on the use and construction of images.

Competition and solidarity networks in contemporary South Asia's Labour Market

Hegemonic neo-liberal discourse assumes that free competition on all levels sparks a virtuous cycle of economic growth, which eventually trickles down to poor populations. Over the past three decades, the idea that restrictive labour laws hamper such competition has justified the deregulation of labour in the North and the un-regulation of labour in the South, notably in South Asia, where labour relations had already mainly been informal. Various sociologists have noted that intensified economic interactions and the rise of competition have made individuals more likely to activate their social networks to protect their individual interests. In this respect, to what extent do social networks shape relations in the diverse South Asian labour markets? How do new forms of social groupings reconfigure competition and solidarity relations? What forms of social interactions prevail, emerge and weaken in the market: chosen solidarity and inherited solidarity; inter-caste and intra-caste solidarity; class solidarity; corporate solidarity etc.?

Multifaceted Inequality in Contemporary India

The "Association des jeunes études indiennes" (AJEI) is a student organization whose members are young researchers coming from various disciplines of the human and social sciences (from masters degree to postdoctoral level) whose area of research is South Asia. Every year, a research seminar in France and a workshop in India bring students and scholars together in order to discuss the topics and papers presented. Since 1998 the AJEI organizes an annual workshop in India with the support of international and local partners. This year we propose a three day workshop with an opening lecture, daily presentations discussed by senior researchers, methodological workshops, and a concluding session. One of our goals is also to interact informally, and build relationships, towards creating a strong international network of researchers.

Il s’agit pour les organisateurs à la fois de présenter une partie de leurs travaux respectifs, d’offrir un panorama actualisé de la recherche sur un espace de prise en charge en mutation, et d’ouvrir une discussion sur la place du « bien-être » dans l’hôpital à partir de recherches croisées (Inde, France, Maroc).

Of animals and men. Shared heritage, and futures to be built

Colloquim on the modernity of human/animal relationships

Ce colloque invite à une réflexion historique, philosophique et anthropologique sur la pluralité des relations que notre société entretient avec les animaux. Il interrogera également les pratiques pour mieux pouvoir imaginer notre devenir commun. Aujourd’hui un débat s’est engagé sur la façon de percevoir, classer, aimer, utiliser, travailler avec les animaux. Depuis l’animal (être singulier et abstrait des animalistes), aux animaux (êtres vivants avec qui nous, êtres humains entretenons des relations multiples et millénaires), il y a une différence notable. D’un point de vue culturel on observe aussi certaines remises en cause de notre modèle alimentaire et de notre régime omnivore avec l’abandon de toutes les nourritures d’origine animale et il nous semble important d'en analyser les fondements.

Louis-Vincent Thomas: 20 years later

Louis-Vincent Thomas débute sa carrière sur le continent africain et y étudie tour à tour les systèmes de pensée, les représentations, la notion de personnalité, les idéologies, les mythes, les rites et les symboles. Une idée forte résulte de ces premiers travaux : « La mort n’est pas le contraire de la vie mais peut-être sa condition fondamentale. » (Thomas, 1993) Dès lors, la question de la finitude devient le cœur de ses recherches, mêlant diverses disciplines, approches et thématiques. Vingt ans après sa disparition, nous proposons d’effectuer un retour sur l’œuvre féconde de ce penseur pluriel et insaisissable. Centré sur les sciences humaines et sociales dans leur sens large, ce colloque met en perspective l’itinéraire de Louis-Vincent Thomas, ses recherches et l’empreinte de son héritage.

Karachi : Ordered Disorder and the Struggle for the City

With a population exceeding twenty million, Karachi is one of world’s largest ‘megacities’. It is also one of the most violent. Since the mid-1980s, Karachi has endured endemic political conflict and criminal violence, which revolve around control of the city and its resources (votes, land and bhatta—‘protection’ money). These struggles for the city have become ethnicised. In the process, Karachi, often referred to as a ‘Pakistan in miniature’, has become increasingly fragmented, socially as well as territorially.

When Books and Art Hurt

Censorship, Emotions and Cultural Regulation in South Asia

This workshop aims at exploring issues of literary and artistic censorship in South Asia (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) by focusing on the way anticipated "hurt" often justifies the policing and regulation of the artistic sphere (cinema, visual arts, literature). Our point of departure is, in the words of Arjun Appadurai, the observation that culture is today the field "where fantasies of purity, authenticity, borders and security can be enacted" and that the same censors patrol the boundaries of politics and aesthetics (Coetzee). In the Indian subcontinent "hurt feelings" are often reactivated or cultivated, staged and mass-mediatised to claim recognition and legitimacy in the public sphere, to require compensation or "redressal". Many artists, writers and academics point to a politics of ultra-sensitivity and a thriving "marketplace of outrage". Our objective in this workshop is to question the vocabulary, topicality and tangibility of "hurt" in the public sphere on these issues of artistic regulation in South Asia, and to understand what it means to say that words or images wound.

Crossing literary forms and theories in comparative contexts

Le concept d’écriture migrante a fait l’objet au Québec de recherches approfondies et d’analyses théoriques dans le domaine des lettres et des arts depuis les années 1980, constituant un champ épistémologique à part entière. Le moment d’émergence de ces études est marqué par la publication de La Québécoite de Régine Robin en 1983, qui fut suivie d’une production fournie et diversifiée comprenant aussi bien des écrivains d’Europe que du Maghreb, de la Caraïbe, d’Asie et du Moyen-Orient. Par la suite, c’est dans une perspective dynamique sur plusieurs générations que s’est effectuée l’interrogation des écritures migrantes, tant au plan historiographique, sociolinguistique, théologique que littéraire et philosophique. Il en est résulté la mise au point d’un ensemble d’outils méthodologiques.
