Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge
This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

LGBTI and Queer Arts, Cultures and Activisms
In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists.

Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (KISMIF) Summer School 2020
The Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (KISMIF) Conference 2020 will be preceded by a Summer School entitled ‘Not Just Holidays in the Sun’ on 7 July 2020 in Rivoli Municipal Theatre of Porto. The Summer School will offer an opportunity for all interested persons, including those participating in the Conference, to attend workshops directed by specialists in their fields. Our KISMIF Summer School program invites students who are interested in, or currently using, DIY cultures in their research to join us for an exciting and innovative one-day summer school program. The goal of the one-day program will be to encourage discussion and experimentation in the documentation of DIY cultures as much as it will be to encourage a new generation of DIY academics (Punk Ethnographers!) to experiment with digital cinema and performance in their research practices.

Du 22 au 28 octobre 2018 se tiendra, à Marseille, une rencontre autour de tables-rondes, expositions, projections, spectacles. Ce croisement des pratiques, créations et réflexions cherchera à explorer comment imaginer de nouvelles manières de rendre visible les migrations, d’entendre la voix migrante. Face à l’urgence et à la complexité des situations, face à un modèle sociétal qui oscille entre images spectaculaires et mesures restrictives, nous souhaitons en effet nous poser ensemble la question de notre responsabilité : comment sortir du « grand spectacle » politique et médiatique pour penser nos productions de façon à « dire la vérité du mieux possible » (N. Chomsky) ?

Le prix Jeune Chercheur de la branche francophone d’Europe de l’International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM) distingue un article scientifique inédit, de type universitaire, rédigé en français et portant sur l’étude des musiques populaires. Son objectif est de contribuer à l’inclusion de jeunes chercheurs francophones au sein du réseau des popular music studies, ainsi qu’à la diffusion en français de nouveaux savoirs sur les musiques populaires. Le lauréat du Prix gagnera la somme de 300€ et sera publié dans la revue Volume!

Repetition/s: Performance and Philosophy in Ljubljana
Contemporary developments in the increasingly intertwined fields of philosophy and performance call for a renewed inquiry into the question of repetition. With its unique critique of ideology arising from a synthesis of German Idealism and Lacanian psychoanalysis, the Ljubljana School (Dolar, Zupančič, Žižek et al.) continues to furnish important theorisations of repetition and performance as they pertain to subjectivity and the political. One of the primary aims of “Repetition/s” will be to investigate and develop the usefulness of the Ljubljana School’s theorisations for the emerging field of Performance Philosophy.

Depuis quelques semaines, un couple d’inconnus récemment installés à Beverly Hills, les Yotta, attire une attention chaque jour croissante. Luxe, bruit et volupté : leur style de vie racoleur a même désormais un nom, la Yotta Life, nouvel avatar urbain du bling-bling dans des villes où l’on peine à dire que tout n’est qu’ordre et beauté. Dans son n°7, la revue Urbanités a décidé d’explorer ces espaces urbains du bling-bling. La richesse d’une ville, de ses habitants et les marqueurs de cette richesse sont au cœur de ce numéro, afin d’essayer d’en comprendre les mécanismes, les processus et les conséquences.

Urban natures: controversial practices
La thématique de la nature en ville croît en importance tant dans la recherche académique que dans le monde politique. D’un côté, les références à une ville vivante, faite d’interactions entre humains et non-humains se manifestant sous des formes et dans des espaces variables organisent aujourd’hui un corpus cohérent sur la nature urbaine. De l’autre, les politiques de biodiversité, de verdissement, ou encore de jardinage voire d’agriculture urbaine, dont le programme « Nature en ville » du canton de Genève constitue un exemple récent, nous montrent une existence politique de ce sujet et un enjeu pour les acteurs des territoires à se positionner sur cette thématique.

What has globalisation done to aesthetics?

Au cours des trente dernières années, on assiste à l’émergence d’artistes contemporains non-occidentaux. Ils sont reconnus par l’institution internationalisée de l’art, retenus par les grandes biennales, mais aussi par les musées et les centres d’art nationaux et internationaux ; qu’ils soient occidentaux ou non-occidentaux. Le langage plastique de l’art contemporain semble ainsi tendre vers une certaine universalité. Ce langage mondialisé peut être perçu, dans son aspect le plus positif, comme le signe d’un partage au-delà des cultures et, dans son aspect le plus sombre, comme le produit de normes imposées par le postmodernisme occidental pris au piège de sa critique du modernisme, c’est-à-dire reproduisant le même schème de la domination occidentale comme Peter Weibel le décrit dans son article « Au-delà du “cube blanc” » (1997).

Production, representations and reception in the Mediterranean
Le développement et le succès des séries télévisées turques constitue un phénomène en Méditerranée depuis la fin des années 1990. Les genres se sont diversifiés, le secteur « fiction » des chaînes turques s’est enrichi de dizaines de nouveaux titres, le budget alloué aux séries a considérablement augmenté, et leurs caractéristiques techniques ainsi que les performances des acteurs ont gagné en qualité. D’abord essentiellement représentées par des formats de type « soap » tournés en studio, les séries turques ont commencé à être tournées dans la rue ou dans d’immenses décors en plein air fabriqués sur mesure. D’abord circonscrit à une audience nationale, le phénomène a maintenant conquis un public au niveau régional : les séries turques s’exportent désormais au Moyen-Orient, au Maghreb, dans les Balkans et en Asie centrale toujours demandeurs d’alternatives aux productions états-uniennes ou européennes devenues trop chères, ou aux telenovelas parfois éloignées de certaines références culturelles locales.

Representing South African cities
This conference proposes to present the latest developments in the research on South African cities, but also to offer an opportunity for academics from various fields (literature, social sciences, architecture, geography, visual arts, etc.) to compare their respective analysis and their theoretical conclusions with the imaginative, artistic representations of the cities of South Africa. The convenors therefore not only invite researchers from all fields to come and present their latest work on South African cities, but also strongly encourage papers which offer a cross-disciplinary approach, or joint presentations between researchers from various fields or academics and artists (writers, directors, photographs). Some major actors of the literary and art scene will be present to expose their views and discuss their works with researchers as well as with a wider, more general audience.This conference is part of the Official Season of South Africa in France.

Appel à contributions consacrées à « l'attente ». On passe sa vie à attendre. Rien de moins neutre en vérité que les périodes d’attente, ces intervalles étranges apparemment sans histoire. Qu’est-ce qui se joue dans ces stases où le temps est comme suspendu ?Quelles sont les formes historiques de l’attente ? Quelles en sont les formes non-occidentales ? Comment penser l’attente au sein d’autres systèmes temporels, moins « progressistes » que le nôtre ? Existe-t-il des sociétés sans attente ? Quelles autres conceptions de l’attente, peut-être plus positives, nous permettent-elles d’entrevoir ?Quels sont les lieux, les formes et les espaces de, l’attente ayant récemment émergés ?
