Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik

The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

170th anniversary international conference

Après le colloque du cent cinquantième anniversaire de 1848 organisé par la Société de 1848 et des révolutions du XIX^e siècle qui a marqué un important jalon historiographique, il a paru important, exactement vingt ans plus tard, de porter un nouveau regard sur cet événement majeur du XIX^e siècle, et cela en répondant d’abord au souhait maintes fois formulé par Maurice Agulhon d’en mieux connaître les acteurs, au moment précis où le Dictionnaire des dirigeants français de 1848 du Centre d’histoire du XIX^e siècle de Sorbonne Université et de Panthéon-Sorbonne, publié sous son patronage, constitue une nouvelle étape qui permet d’aller plus loin ; mais il s’agit aussi d’élargir la focale pour s’intéresser cette fois à l’ensemble du printemps des peuples. La question centrale de ces journées est ainsi : Qu’est-ce qu’être un acteur du printemps des peuples 1848 ?

À l'occasion du 70^e anniversaire de l'arrivée à Paris des boursiers grecs du Gouvernement français embarqués à bord du Mataroa pour venir étudier loin de leur pays où la guerre civile menaçait, les Archives nationales organisent en partenariat avec leurs homologues grecques un colloque sur les relations franco-helléniques au XX^e siècle, de l'entrée en guerre de la Grèce de Vénizélos au départ du pouvoir de François Mitterrand et Constantin Caramanlis.

Voluntary Associations in the Yugoslav Space

Relations with State and Family from the Late 19th Century to the Present

The workshop focusses on the changing relationship between voluntary associations/NGOs, the state and the family. According to traditional sociological views, civil society – and thus associations, as its most frequently evoked incarnation – are conceived as being opposed to both the state and the family, a sort of free space for collective agency escaping from the strictures of both kinship structures and of the state. More recently, scholars of civil society have convincingly shown the problems with drawing a clear-cut border between the state and VAs/NGOs, and tend to see this border as porous, shifting, and subject to negotiation.

Four Post-doctoral positions on "Luxury, Fashion and Social statuS in Early Modern South-Eastern Europe"

New Europe College - Institute for Advanced Study

Following the European Research Council competition for Consolidator Grants (2014), New Europe College became the Host Institution of such a grant. The project title is Luxury, Fashion and Social statuS in Early Modern South-Eastern Europe and its Principal Investigator is Constanţa Vintilă-Ghiţulescu, researcher at New Europe College and at the “Nicolae Iorga” Institute of History in Bucharest. The project aims to trace the role luxury played in the modernisation process in South-Eastern Europe, taking into account the specific features of the region and how South-Eastern European peoples, and their Byzantine and Ottoman heritage are viewed through the stereotype of “Balkanism”. The project’s findings will help towards a better knowledge of changes in European society in its transition to modernity, and of similarities and differences between the various regions of Europe.

The Vulnerability and Marginality of Youth in the Mediterranean Basin (19th-20th centuries)

French Journal for the History of “Unconventional” Childhood

The Revue d’histoire de l’enfance “irrégulière” (the French Journal for the History of “Unconventional” Childhood) will devote its next issue to the different perceptions and management policies focused on irregular or marginal youth in the countries of the Mediterranean basin (i.e. the northern coast of the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Mashriq and the Maghreb) throughout the 19^th and 20^th centuries. Specifically, we expect that the study of the public policies adopted by the countries of the region to deal with their youth will put the hypothesis of the unity and singularity of the Mediterranean to the test: either it will allow some sort of shared approach to emerge or, on the contrary, it will expose the Mediterranean as a cultural and ideological construct.

Political Border and Identifications: Populations between Habsburg Monarchy and Ottoman Empire

L’objectif de cette conférence est de réunir des chercheurs venus de différents pays – France, Serbie et Croatie – afin d’échanger sur la question des identifications aux frontières austro-ottomanes au XVIIIe siècle. Ce type de problématique a déjà été largement traité pour l’espace hexagonal et méditerranéen en France. Mais la situation de cette frontière terrestre qui passait, à l’époque, pour la limite orientale de l’Europe chrétienne puis de l’Europe policée ou éclairée, est beaucoup moins connue. Pourtant, l’histoire de la frontière en Europe centrale et balkanique s’appuie sur une tradition historiographique déjà longue et continue à faire l’objet de nombreux travaux portant sur des sources encore peu étudiées. Cette table ronde, qui se tiendra en anglais et en français, sera donc l’occasion de découvrir et de discuter ces perspectives de recherche.

Society and Politics in South-Eastern Europe during the 19th century

There has always been a negative image attached to South-Eastern European politics and polities and rarely has it been widely acknowledged (Mazower) that the process of state formation in the region was not just a pale and gruesome caricature of Western European models but rather a complicated affair involving juggling with various institutional models (local as well as imported ones), coping with societies of a sometimes inextricable ethnoreligious diversity and varying degrees of political allegiance to central power, dealing with foreign interference and tampering. 19th century visitors of the region contributed a lot to this negative image which still clings to the region (Todorova) and culturalists still like to refer back to the 19th c. as the genealogical matrix of all the region’s evils.

L'École française d'Athènes, en partenariat avec d'autres institutions universitaires françaises et européennes, annonce le démarrage d'un programme de recherche pluriannuel sur les relations interconfessionnelles dans le Sud-Est européen et la Méditerranée orientale de 1850 à 1940 et appelle les chercheurs intéressés (confirmés, post-docs ou doctorants avancés) à joindre les équipes de recherche qui s'y forment. Contraintes locales et enjeux internationaux, 1854-1923

À l'heure de l'élargissement partiel et problématique de l'U.E. en direction du Sud-Est européen et de la Méditerranée orientale, ce colloque organisé par l'École française d'Athènes vient aborder une des questions les plus brûlantes dans la région et ayant souvent donné lieu à des simplifications caricaturales, parfois lourdes de consèquences. En abordant l’histoire des relations interconfessionnelles de 1854 à 1923, nous nous proposons d’adopter un point de vue relationnel étayant la variété des contacts, la multitude des stratégies des individus comme des institutions, le rapport complexe entre religions, identités et politique, enfin le rapport ambigu entre Orient et Occident, plutôt que de présenter un énième essai, facile et rassurant, de définition essentialiste des identités religieuses et de leur correspondance parfaite et diachronique à des identités nationales.
