The Global Race project (2016-2020) investigates the reconfigurations of the race concept since 1945 in the scientific realm, state policies, and social movements. The three-day final conference of the project will gather French and international scholars who will examine various theories and practices regarding the use of racial and ethnic categories and will explore how controversies around race have unfolded in Europe and the Americas.

Gendering Humanitarian Knowledge
Global Histories of Compassion from the Mid-Nineteenth Century to the Present
The conference invites scholars to think about the notion of "humanitarian knowledge" in a multidisciplinary way, by combining perspectives such as gender history, the histories ofemotions and the body, literary and visual culture studies, global health history, as well as the history of institutions and their agents. All of them are useful to explore the transnational networks through which humanitarian practices and ideas have been promoted, disseminated and standardised.The conference brings together scholars interested in working on the history of humanitarian knowledge from a gender perspective. The interventions deal with stories of flesh and blood, which put women’s and men’s humanitarian experiences at their centre, in order to inscribe their local practices within a global history of compassion from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

The international conference Reframing the (Art) World/Redéfinir le monde (de l’art) aims at concluding an intense three-year research carried out within the frame of the research programme PRISME, hosted at the Archives de la critique d’art (Archives of Art Criticism in Rennes). By following a multidisciplinary approach, the aim of this conference is to reframe a still little-known chapter of cultural history, in order to reconsider art criticism as a historical and epistemological prism in regard to international issues since the second half of the XXth century.

Le comité de rédaction de la revue Émulations cherche à s’agrandir. Il s’agit du groupe moteur de la revue qui est en charge du travail d’édition. Les tâches sont diverses et variées et comprennent la prise de décisions collectives (notamment sur les stratégies et projets futurs de la revue ou les thématiques des prochains numéros), la (pré)évaluation d’articles scientifiques et de recensions d’ouvrages, la relecture et mise en forme des articles retenus ou l’animation des outils de communication de la revue. Plus globalement, les membres du comité de rédaction sont les porteurs du projet et peuvent donc y trouver un espace où donner forme à d’autres idées susceptibles de correspondre à l’identité de la revue.

Euro-mediterranean encounters, 7th edition of the Salerno conversations
L’Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Marseille se fait le promoteur depuis 2009 d’une politique culturelle intitulée Santé e(s)t culture(s) consacrée notamment à la compréhension et à la diffusion des dimensions culturelles de la médecine et de la santé en Méditerranée. Celle-ci est structurée par un réseau de sept centres hospitalo-universitaires qui se sont donnés un programme de réflexion, d’échanges et d’actions en commun. Cette septième édition des conversations de Salerne constitue le point d’orgue du cycle de rencontres programmées entre 2010 et 2013 à Marseille et dans les pays partenaires. Elle questionnera plus globalement le processus de dialogue dans le champ de la santé en Méditerranée, entre l’hôpital et la société, entre le soin et la culture. Processus ayant vocation à contribuer à une conception humaniste de la médecine en Méditerranée.

Grant for a PhD thesis: International Governance of Emerging Animal Diseases
Cirad is a French research centre working with developing countries to tackle international agricultural and development issue. Cirad proposes a three years grant for a PhD thesis, in political sciences, based in Montpellier France. The thesis will be part of a global pluridisciplinary research project on emerging animal diseases (including virologists, epidemiologists, vets and social scientists. The thesis will address the question of the evolution of the international governance in this field. / Le CIRAD propose une bourse de 3 ans pour une thèse en sociologie politique, sciences politiques, basée à Montpellier, France. Cet travail de thèse s'inscrit dans un projet pluridisciplinaire sur les maladies émergentes animales (réunissant des virologues, épidémiologistes, vétérinaires, sociologues et politistes). La thèse portera sur l'analyse de la gouvernance internationale des émergences zoosanitaires. -

Les contributions attendues exploreront différents aspects du fonctionnement du réseau, son information, sa création, son organisation et son système d’échange ou les activités de « boundary spanning » des individus et institutions et instruments techniques et académiques qu’ils ont été capables de développer pendant cette période de la Belle Époque qui s’étend de 1880 à 1914 où le vieux continent (y compris l’Angleterre) supporte un changement social, politique et « épistémique » considérable. Les contributions peuvent être méthodologiques ou analytiques. Les résumés, rédigés en français ou en anglais avec un maximum de 500 mots, doivent parvenir pour le 31 janvier 2010 au plus tard à Boyd Rayward (wrayward@illinois.edu) ou à Stéphanie Manfroid (stephanie.manfroid@mundaneum.be). -

Lancement de la revue International Political Sociology
Conférence IPS-COST
La conférence jointe IPS-COST qui a lieu les 26 et 27 octobre prochains au CERI-Sciences Po Paris/CNRS est organisée dans le cadre du lancement de la revue International Political Sociology (IPS). Cette dernière, et le réseau de recherche qui l’entoure souhaitent encourager une perspective générale transdisciplinaire dans l’analyse des phénomènes du monde contemporain, en offrant un espace où pourront s’articuler des contributions de chercheurs du monde entier. La distribution géographique des membres du journal, du réseau COST et des programmes de recherche qui y sont associés (comme Challenge), loin de représenter un obstacle, ouvre au contraire à de nouveaux domaines de recherche. Cette conférence sera ainsi une excellente occasion de lancer cette dynamique de recherche internationale et d’aborder et de discuter des orientations éditoriales de la revue IPS et des visions croisées qu’elle véhicule. La conférence permettra de présenter le projet de la revue en tant que tel mais aussi ses trois premiers numéros. Elle illustrera, par les interventions au programme, les spécificités de la revue mais aussi son ouverture et les bénéfices à tirer d’une approche transversale émanant de disciplines aussi diverses que les Relations internationales, les sciences politiques, la sociologie ou la géographie politique… -

Architecture and the space of information, intellect and action
The International Conference on Analogous Spaces interrogates the analogy between spaces in which knowledge is preserved, organized, transferred or activated. Although these spaces may differ in material, virtual, or operational ways, there are resemblances if one examines their ‘structure,’ ‘form’ and ‘architecture’. How do these spaces co-exist and interrelate? The conference will be organized around three main themes: 1. The first theme explores spatial analogies in terms of social and intellectual networks. 2. The second theme deals with the space of knowledge and memory. 3. The third theme explores the space required for speed, action and decision making.
